December 2004 OBITUARIES
Hilda Bumbaca, 81, of Sheridan, passed away on Monday, December 20, 2004, at St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings, MT. Hilda’s mother and father, Jacob and Katherine (Pfief) Stroh, immigrated from the German Community of Frank, Russia to Billings, MT. The couple heard of great opportunities in Yonkers, New York so Jacob moved his family there where Hilda was born on July 31, 1923, the youngest of three children. They returned to Billings in 1925 where Hilda grew up and attended Garfield Elementary and Billings High School. It was there that she met James P. Bumbaca whom she married on April 26, 1949 at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Art and Helen Hafey in Rocksprings, WY. The couple settled in Sheridan and owned and operated the Club 87 for twenty eight years until retiring in 1977. Hilda worked hard all of her life without complaining. She was an unselfish person and would always put the needs of her family before her own. Her greatest joys in life were her grandson and the births of her three great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held at 2:00 p.m. till 5:00p.m. on Sunday December 26, 2004, at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 27, 2004, at Kane Funereal Home with Pastor William Heine officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery. P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan , WY 82801. Robert was born January 25, 1915, in Waynesboro, PA, to Benjamin and May (Hawbecker) Byers Robert moved to Washington, DC when he was one yr. old. He grew up in Washington where he graduated in 1933 from McKinley High School. Robert married Lucille Replogle March 10, 1945 in Baltimore MD where he worked for Wilkins Coffee for nine years. He was drafted into the Army in 1941 and later discharged with a medical discharge. After the army, he worked as a purser on a ship out of Baltimore, a private investigator, a clerk typist with the VA and later became the Veterans Benefits Counselor. He was transferred to the VA Medical Center in Sheridan with his family in 1966 where he later retired. After retirement, he worked with All American Indian Days and for the Chamber of Commerce. Bob was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed his family, church, Wyoming, Senior Center friends, bible study, helping people, history, gardening, cooking, traveling, hiking in the Bighorns, cross country skiing, square dancing, and telling stories to his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sister Miriam and Helen, and his wife. Robert is survived by his two sons, Alan of Bellview, NE and Daniel of Douglas, AK. Two daughters, Alice Baker of Big Horn, WY. and Mary Ellen Byers of Hamilton, MT. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral service will be 2:00pm on Wednesday (Dec. 29th) from Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Military rites performed by the Wyo. National Guard and the American Legion. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorials may benefit Trinity Lutheran Church. Rosemarie Yvonne Davis, 89, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, December 20, 2004 in Westview Health Care Center. Mrs. Davis was born October 31, 1915 in Sheridan County, WY to Frank and Mary (Banas) Potoski. She grew up on her family’s ranch on Beatty Gulch north of Sheridan. She went to the Wagner Grade School and then graduated from Sheridan High School in 1935. Rosemarie worked for her aunt, Mary Kumor and cooked on ranches for Covers and Wilson’s at Big Horn; Owens at Dayton; and Belton Evans on Pass Creek. She married Jack R. Davis October 21, 1942 in Sheridan, WY. They lived in Laurel and Shelby, MT before settling in Wyola, MT. where Jack worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs until his retirement in 1975 when they moved to Sheridan. Mrs. Davis was an excellent cook, seamstress, an avid gardener known for her tomatoes, enjoyed the outdoors, and had an extreme love for wild-life. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack, in 1984; one sister, Amelia Barnes; and two brothers, Frank Potoscar, and John Potoski. Rosemarie is survived by 1 son, Jack Davis, and wife, Sheila, of Denver, CO; 2 daughters, DeAndrea Folster, and husband, Les; and Cheryl Gill, and husband, Gene, both of Sheridan; 1 sister, Ann Sikora, of Sheridan; 4 grandchildren, Terry Davis, Denver, CO, Corey Davis, of Dallas, TX, and Jeremy Shassetz and Michele Folster, both of Sheridan, WY; and 3 great-grandchildren, Aaron, Dalton, and Jordan Davis, all of Denver, CO. Visitation for Mrs. Davis will be from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00
P.M. Wednesday, December 22, 2004, and from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Thursday,

with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Florence Dorothy, 89, of Sheridan, passed away on Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at her daughter Jean’s residence in Sheridan.
The family has requested that memorials be made in Florence’s name to Hospice of the Big Horns care of Karen Green, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan , WY 82801. Wilma Ellis, 76, of Sheridan, passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Cremation has taken place locally in Sheridan with memorial services scheduled for sometime in January 2005. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made in Wilma’s name to the homeless shelter in care of Karen Green, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801. Phyllis E. Hartman, 78, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, December 20, 2004 in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Mrs. Hartman was born March 3, 1926 in Devil’s Lake, N. D. to Martin and Emma C. (Mikkelson) Larson. She grew up and attended schools in Webster and Devil’s Lake, N. D., and graduated from Sheridan High School. She attended Lawrence College in Appleton, WI, then attended and graduated from Jamestown College in Jamestown, N. D. After graduation from college, Phyllis returned to Sheridan and married William Schwartz in the 1st Congregational Church in Sheridan. The couple moved to Washington, moving back to Sheridan in 1958, joining the family business in the Sheridan Greenhouse. The Schwartz’s were later divorce. Phyllis married Dan Gerrard. He preceded her in death. She then married Harold Hartman who also preceded her in death. Mrs. Hartman was a Past Matron of Friendship Chapter # 51, Order of the Eastern Star in Sheridan, was a member of the Daughters of the Nile, Sahida Temple, and was very active in Shrine activities. She loved the mountains and the family cabin, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her 2 husbands, 2 sisters, and 1 brother. Mrs. Hartman is survived by 3 sons, Martin “Mo” Schwartz, and wife, Donna, Rob Schwartz, and wife, Julie, both of Sheridan, Paul Schwartz, and wife, Karen, of Big Horn, WY; 3 step-sons; 1 step-daughter; 7 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren. At Mrs. Hartman’s request, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service for family and friends will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801 Herman Kreger, age 90, passed away at the VA Medical Center, Sheridan, WY on December 27, 2004. He was born on November 23, 1914 to John and Amelia (Molly) Barret Kreger in Laurel, MT. The family moved to the Sheridan area in 1920. Mr Kreger served in the U.S. Army as a 1st Sergeant from November 27, 1943 to January 30, 1946. He ranched from 1937-1940, worked at Gambles Store, Northern Lumber Co. From 1947-1966, Sheridan Flouring Mill until it closed, then he owned the Maytag Coin-Operated Laundry for fourteen years, retiring in 1978. Herman was commander of the American Legion from 1957-1958. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, and fishing in the Big Horn Mountains and Lake DeSmet. He was an avid gardener having had the "Yard of the Week" one summer. The grandchildren called him "Punky" as a nickname when they were growing up. He collected caps, having a collection of eighty-five or more with paying for very few. He was married to Mabel Schnorf January 14, 1938. They were married for fifty years. Then he later married Ruth (Howarth) Badget July 8, 1988. Preceding him in death were Mabel Kreger, a son Herman Edward Kreger in 1963, grandson, Elton Roth, brothers, John and Victor Kreger, and sister, Emma Lee Nelson. Survivors include his wife, Ruth, daughters, Karen Lee Roth (Gary), and Donna Kay Kepp (Rick), sisters, Millie Loeber and Esther Badget (Tink), step-son, Wayne T. Wagner, four granddaughters, Cindy Shoop, Chris Hedrich, Chelly Fiedor and Mindy Fiedor, three grandsons, Gary Alan Roth, Jim Roth, and Mel Roth, ten great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Bank, PO Box 2007 , Sheridan, WY 82801. Thomas Michael Legerski Sr., 82, of Sheridan, passed away on Tuesday, December 14, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Harry C. Little, age 53, of Sheridan, WY died Wednesday, December 29, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Harry was born July 24, 1951, in White Salmon, Washington, to Ben and Joan (Barker) Little. He grew up and graduated from high school in Washington. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Sacramento. He married Deborah in the mid 1970’s. She later died of cancer. Harry married Laura Keele on February 28, 1979, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and they were sealed in the Ogden Temple in 1982. They divorced in 1989. He moved to Rock Springs, WY, where he worked on oil rigs. Harry then moved to California and worked at the sugar plant in Santa Maria for several years. Harry worked at several jobs before coming to Sheridan in 1996. He worked on numerous projects and was always looking for a big opportunity. Harry was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he performed missionary work. He was preceded in death by his father and his brother Bobby. Harry is survived by his sons Benjamin Keele (Little), Clifford, Austin and Scott Little all of Las Vegas, NV; daughter Maribah Little of Salt Lake, UT; and one grandson. Memorial service will be 10:00am on Tuesday (Jan. 4th) from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop Richard Welch officiating. Interment will be in Oregon Trail Veterans Cemetery, Evansville, WY. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Brownie Ward Means, 80, of Sheridan, WY, died Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Means was born May 20, 1924 in Gillette, WY, to Monty and Mildred (Sanburn) Means. He was raised in northern Campbell County and attended grade school there. After completing grade school, he began working on large ranches in the area belonging to Joe Snoddy, Glen Morris, and his favorite, the Keeline Ranch. “Ward,” as everyone knew him, was married to Faye Weaver in October 1943, and shortly thereafter he was inducted into the U. S. Army. His basic training was in Florida and he then was deployed overseas with the 4th Infantry Division for the Normandy Invasion. Ward was seriously wounded in action on November 13, 1944, in the Hurtgen Forest in Germany. Ward and Faye had two daughters, Darlene and Anita Jo. When Ward returned from the service he and Faye bought the Powder River Hotel in Broadus, MT, and that was their home until they moved to Sheridan, WY in 1969 where they had a horse operation, and Ward worked as a security guard at the Decker Coal Mine. Ward and Faye later divorced. Ward married Dora Harvey on August 7, 1987, and they remained in Sheridan. Ward loved working with horses, dancing and playing cards. He was a member of the Powder River Masonic Lodge #135 in Broadus, MT, the V.F.W. Post in Broadus, the Disabled American Veteran’s, the American Quarter Horse Association, and was a past member of the Sheridan Elk’s Lodge #520. Ward also had been a member of the Sheridan WYO Rodeo Board. In his later years, as a hobby, he began making picture frames from barn wood and enjoyed raising roses and visiting with family and friends. Ward was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Dale Means; and his two daughters, Darlene and Anita Jo. He is survived by his wife, Dora; two grandsons, Cody Cunningham, (Marcy), Casey Cunningham, (Jessie); one sister, Joan Dinsmoore, (Bill); three brothers, Glenn Means, (Sue), Jerry Means, (Marge), and Bob Means, (Penny); and four great grandchildren. Ward is also survived by three step-children, Ronnie Harvey, (Sharilyn), Randy Harvey, (Jean), and Sharon Borla, (Sam); five step-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801 Mary Morel, age 92, of Sheridan, WY died Thursday, December 16, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Mary was born on January 20, 1912, on a ranch near Gillette, WY to Timothy and Cecelia (Lackous) Gupton. She graduated from Campbell Co. High School and completed her education by attending Normal training to be a teacher. Mary taught rural school for several years north of Gillette. She married Charles Morel on February 28, 1937, in Sheridan and immediately moved to St. Petersburg, Alaska. They resided in Alaska for two years before moving back to the Gillette area and then to Sheridan in 1941. They lived in the Woodland Park area. Mary worked in the cafeteria at Woodland Park School for 17 years. She was a charter member of the McCormick Homemaker’s Club. She enjoyed the summer time when she could be in her garden and flowerbeds. She was especially fond of roses. She also enjoyed watching the birds in her yard and visiting with her friends and family. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Charles in 1986; and brother Chester Gupton. Mary is survived by son Steve Morel of Sewell, NJ; daughters Kathleen Nance of Sheridan and Caralee Knapp of Limestone, TN; brother Sam Gupton of Tomahawk, Alberta, Canada; 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Graveside service will be 2:00pm on Monday (Dec. 20th) in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with Pastor Dan Keller officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Pense, 81 of Sheridan passed away at Westview Health Care Center on Monday, December 6, 2004.

Memorials may be made in George’s name to the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter in care of Karen Green, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801. Charles R. “Chuck” Pfeifer, died on December 17, 2004, in St. Louis, MO, where he had lived for the last fifteen months. Born in Albion, MI, to Paul Amos and Gladys Shepard Pfeifer, he studied the violin under the tutelage of his mother as a young boy. Baseball was a favorite pastime, and he met his future wife Doris Cornwell while their fathers played on the same semi-professional baseball team in Battle Creek, MI. He and Doris were married July 3, 1941, and he joined the US Army shortly thereafter. While serving in the US Army, from which he retired as Lt. Colonel in 1965, he participated in World War II and the Korean War, receiving the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal, US and Korean Presidential Medals and seven Battle Stars. Mr. Pfeifer attended Advanced Officers School and the Army Intelligence School before he and his family spent a tour of duty in Japan and two tours in Germany, in addition to various posts around the United States. He was honored to have been on special assignment at military headquarters in Little Rock, AR, during the initial high school integration. While acting as US Army advisor to the National Guard on the western slope of Colorado, Mr. Pfeifer was instrumental in implementing the use of Howitzer cannons for avalanche control. After his military retirement, the family moved to Denver, CO, where he was active in the administration of American Legion Baseball and volunteered with his son’s high school varsity baseball team. In 1972, Chuck and Doris moved to Sheridan, WY, after visiting their daughter’s family there the previous Christmas. They owned and operated C Bar D Cabinets & Lighting until 1989 when they sold the business to Jim & Shirl Yeager who transformed it into Interior Images at 200 West Brundage. After this second retirement, Chuck played a lot of golf and spent many productive hours in his sizable woodworking shop. His specialty soon became children’s rocking chairs, cradles and riding toys. After his wife Doris died in 1997, he spent more time traveling, often logging twenty to thirty thousand miles a year on his Honda. He was a charter member of the Big Horn Homebuilders Association, served on the original Kendrick Golf Course Commission and was a board member of the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce. He was an active member of Sheridan’s First United Methodist Church and is remembered there for his many woodworking projects for them. Mr. Pfeifer is survived by his daughter Cheryl Fillion of St. Louis, MO, his son Paul Pfeifer of Sheridan, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister. Funeral service will be 10:00am on Wednesday (Dec. 29th) from First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Military rites performed by Wyo. National Guard and the American Legion. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. A reception will be held at the church immediately following the interment. Memorial may benefit First United Methodist Church. Barbara Ann Schaffer, 69, of Sheridan, WY, died Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Schaffer was born July 13, 1935 in Sheridan, WY to Fred and Berneice (Gosch) Kinter. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan, graduating from Sheridan High School in 1955. Barbara married Elmer Schaffer February 15, 1959 in Sheridan. She was a homemaker and mother before going to work for J. C. Penney in Sheridan, where she stayed until her retirement in 1995. Mrs. Schaffer was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sheridan, and enjoyed sewing, crafts, reading, and spending time with her family. Barbara was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her husband, Elmer, of Sheridan; one son, Robert L. Schaffer; and one daughter, Kim Wagner; both of Sheridan; two brothers, Christian and Alfred Kinter; eight sisters, Bernice, Norma, Evelyn, Georgia Kay, Anna, Peggy, Judy, and Karen; and 3 grandchildren. Visitation for Barbara will be from 9:00 A.M to 5:00 P.M. Friday, December 17, 2004 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Helen is survived by her three children, Rick Zingham of Story, Scott Zingham, and Joyce McGregor both of Sheridan; her four grandchildren, Justin and Jessie Zingham and Melissa and Molly McGregor and her great-grandchild, Jordyn Bason; her two brothers, Ted Pidde and his wife Delores of Freenzan, S.D. and Al Pidde and his wife Becky of Charleston, South Carolina; and her two sisters, Elise Miller of Oak Park, Illinois and Alice Reynolds of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her three brothers, Herb, Wally, and Marty Pidde. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 30, 2004, at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor William Heine officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
