Leon “Butch” Brown, age 63, of Big Horn, WY, died on Sunday, November 14, 2004, in the V.A. Medical Center, Sheridan, WY. He was born on July 29, 1941, in Philadelphia, PA to William & Miriam (Renner) Brown He grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Northeast High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the flight deck crew of the aircraft carrier USS Bennington. He worked as a production supervisor for the World Citrus West Juice Co. in Fullerton, CA where he retired and then moved to Sheridan in 1994. In Sheridan, he worked for airport security, drove a van for the Senior Center and was a prep cook at the Sheridan Inn. He enjoyed gourmet cooking, fishing, umpiring baseball and collecting baseball memorabilia. He loved his animals and pets. Mr. Brown is survived by his companion Barbara Foster; sons David of Sacramento, CA, Michael of Chino, CA, Keith of Rock Springs, WY and Darrell Foster of Seattle, WA; daughters Bobbie Lynn Brown of Chino, CA and Diane Edwards of Rock Spring, WY; brother Frank Brown of Sheridan; sister Ethel Brown of Muskegon, Michigan and numerous grandchildren. Federal Savings Bank, Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801 Raymond D. Campbell, 80, of Sheridan, WY, died Saturday, November 6, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Campbell was born July 8, 1924 in Arvada, WY to Douglas M. and Mabel (Fillmore) Campbell. He grew up and attended schools in Sheridan, graduating from Sheridan High School in 1943. Mr. Campbell then joined the Army for 3 years, serving in the European Theater in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, the Rhineland, and the Battle of the Bulge. He then returned to Sheridan and went to work for the U. S. Post Office in 1946, retiring February 1, 1984, after 38 ½ years of service. Mr. Campbell married Belva Meinzer June 13, 1954 in the Methodist Church in Sheridan. Ray was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sheridan, a 55 year member of the American Legion Post #7, member of Sheridan Lodge #8, A. F. M. & A. M., Royal Arch Masons Chapter #7, 53 year member Sheridan Council #3, Knights Templar, Demolay Commandery #6, a life member of Sheridan Elk’s Lodge #520, and a member of the Men’s Group of the Methodist Church. Mr. Campbell was an avid reader, enjoyed spending time in the mountains, traveling, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, 1 granddaughter, 1 brother, and 1 sister. He is survived by his wife, Belva, of Sheridan; 1 son, Gary W. Campbell, (Cindy), of Stafford, VA; 2 sisters, Ann Mikkelson, (Joe), of Portland, OR, and Bonnie Madden, of Pensacola, FL; 2 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild. Visitation for Mr. Campbell will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 10, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Interment will be in the Elks Section of the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. United Methodist Church, 215 W. Works St., Sheridan, WY 82801 Katherine M. David, 98, of Sheridan, WY, died Friday, November 5, 2004 in Sheridan Manor. Mrs. David was born September 2, 1906 in Livingston, MT to Andrew and Martha (Bronzlow) Petersen. She grew up and attended grade school in Springdale, MT, and graduated from High School in Livingston. Mrs. David then attended Normal School in Billings, and Dillon, MT. She then taught in the rural schools around Livingston and Big Timber, MT. Mrs. David married Henry James David at the J. N. Ranch at Springdale, MT April 18, 1935. The couple moved to Gold Creek & Ogden Mountain where Mr. David mined gold. In 1939, the David’s moved to Livingston, MT where Mr. David worked in a blacksmith shop. The David’s then moved to Sheridan in 1944. Mrs. David was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, and was in the church sewing circle where she enjoyed making quilts. She was a member of A.A.R.P., enjoyed playing cards, Bingo, her flowers, gardening, traveling, the mountains, her clothing, and spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, in 1980, her parents, 3 brothers, and 1 sister. Mrs. David is survived by 2 sons; Jim David, (Peggy), of Sheridan, WY, and Vernon David, (Betty Jo), of Tucson, AZ; 1 daughter, Marge Lauters, Casper, WY; 6 grandchildren; James A. David, of Salt Lake City, UT, De Ann Cougler, of Munich, Germany, Michael David, and Kathy David, both of Denver, CO, Cody Williams, and Emil Williams, both of Casper, WY; and 7 great grandchildren. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801 Norma Jean Hensley, age 80, of Sheridan, WY, died Tuesday, November 2, 2004, in Westview Health Care Center, Sheridan Norma was born January 8, 1924, in Aurora, Illinois, to Arthur & Mildred (Clark) Runge She grew up in Illinois coming to Sheridan and graduating from Sheridan High School in 1941. She worked for Wortham Machinery for a few years. Norma married Jess Hensley on June 13, 1948, in Sheridan. She enjoyed golf, bowling, gardening, growing flowers and was an avid reader. She loved spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by son Dale; brother Jack and her parents. Norma is survived by her husband Jess of Sheridan; son Scott of Phoenix, AZ; daughters Cheri Moon of Sundance, WY and Mary Mentock of Sheridan; brother Dick Runge of McPherson, Kansas; 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Brundage St, Sheridan, WY 82801 Josie Hobbs passed away on Friday, November 26, 2004, at her home after a courageous 20-year battle with breast cancer. Born Josephine E. Smith on May 11, 1927, in Sheridan, Wyoming, she was the second child of George and Mary Smith. She was beloved by her older sister Dorothy. Josie worked at Small’s Corner Drug and Mountain Bell Telephone Company during her high school years, and was crowned 1945 Homecoming Football Queen by Ray Hobbs, whom she married on August 20, 1948. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1946, and after he marriage to Ray, the couple moved to Pullman, Washington, where she worked at the telephone company. She gave birth to their first child in 1952, and by 1957, they were parents of three children, Jody, John, and Wesley. Josie was a devoted and loving mother and homemaker. She was known for having a house that was always neat and tidy. In 1962, she began working part-time with the Washington State University Student Book Corporation. She retired in 1987, to return to Story, Wyoming, her love of the West. Josie spent countless hours attending football and basketball games to cheer on the Pullman High School Greyhounds, and later the Colton Wildcats. She was adored by all who knew her. Josie loved collecting recipes, cookbooks, and antiques. She enjoyed camping outdoors with her family and good friends. She always enjoyed telling a joke. Those listening to her would laugh at her before she could deliver the punch line. Josie was miracle cancer patient. After being diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 1999, she continued to beat the odds and surprise her doctors. She battled cancer in her terms and won herself, her family, and friends five more years. Josie’s positive attitude was an inspiration to all who knew her. She always greeted others with the warmth of a smile and a genuine cheerfulness. Her soul was filled with love, laughter, and a spirit of adventure. Her love joins us again in spirit and forever in our hearts. Cremation has taken place locally, and a Celebration of Josie’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1, 2004, at the Story Women’s Club with the Reverend Richard Edgerton officiating. Memorial services will be held at the Simpson Methodist Church in Pullman, Washington. Inurnment of the cremains will follow in the Pullman City Cemetery. The Hobbs Family is forever grateful for the continued support and compassionate care provided for Josie by the medical staff of the Johnson County Healthcare Center and the Buffalo Hospice. The family has requested that memorials be made in Josie’s name to the Susie Bowling Lawrence Hospice, Johnson County Healthcare Center in Buffalo, Wyoming, or to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, directing funds to be used for breast cancer research. Dorothy E. Mooney, age 82, of Sheridan, WY, died Friday, November 12, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Dorothy was born March 7, 1922, in Derby, Iowa, to Elmer and Rosa (Cooley) Davis. Dorothy and her family came to Wyoming in 1929 where they homesteaded on Dry Fork in the Sussex area of Johnson County. They moved to the Sheridan area in 1946 and purchased a ranch on Prairie Dog Creek that she operated until her death. She married Leroy Mooney on May 10, 1947. He passed away in March 1987. Dorothy’s interests were varied from cattle and horses to reading, painting, dolls and genealogy in her later years. She never shied from hard work and attributed it to her long, active life. She will be greatly missed by family, friends and neighbors. Dorothy was also preceded in death by her parents; daughter Lynn (Mooney) Hoffman; brothers Pearl, Marvin, Luther & Jim; sister Fern. Dorothy is survived by two sons Glenn of Sheridan and Steve of Gillette, WY; daughter Jeanine Bursell of Sheridan; sister Elma Mooney of Sheridan; five grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Memorial service will be 11:00am on Tuesday (Nov. 16th)

Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801 Douglas H. Olver, age 69, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, November 1, 2004, in the V.A. Medical Center, Sheridan He was born July 27, 1935, in Clearmont, WY, to Harry & Francis (Vannoy) Olver. Douglas grew up and graduated from high school in Clearmont. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from the Mediterranean to Southeast Asia including three years on submarines. He retired from the Navy after 20 years. Douglas married Ines C. Franklin on June 10, 1959, in Sheridan. After the service, he returned to Sheridan where he worked at the V.A. Medical Center until he retired in 1997. Douglas enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, collecting antique tools, woodworking and was an avid Denver Broncos fan. He loved spending time with his family and taking his grandsons fishing. He was preceded in death by a brother Alfred and his parents. Douglas is survived by his wife Ines of Sheridan; sons Steven and Gregory of Sheridan; daughters Tamara Tarver of Sheridan, Nicki Olver of Sheridan and Kelly Camino of White Eagle, OR; brothers Benjamin of DeBary, FL, Robert of Buffalo, WY and Larry of Ridgecrest, CA; sisters Katherine Brantz of Cody, WY, Geri Usher of Gastonia, NC, Carla Ash of Sheridan and Cathy Reed of Banner, WY; four grandsons and one great granddaughter. Karen Green, First Interstate Bank, Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801 Marian Rompf, 66, of Sheridan, died Friday, November 12, 2004, at her residence east of Sheridan after a long battle with cancer. Marian was born December 24, 1937 in Chicago to Howard and Mae (Enders) Olson. She grew up and attended school in Chicago and moved to the Sheridan area in 1964. Marian enjoyed doing community volunteer work in the Sheridan area which included being involved with All American Indian Days, serving on the board for the Children’s Center until her death, Sheridan County Cattle Women, Sheridan County Memorial Hospital auxiliary, and the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library. Marian served as the office manager for Dr. E. E. Edwards and later for Dr. Bruce Holwell’s dental practice for over thirty years, and she was an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling with her loving life long companion Bill Willey. Marian was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Marian was preceded in death by both of her parents. She is survived by life long companion Bill Willey, daughter Susan (Albert) and granddaughter Sara Mickelson of Sheridan, son Michael Rompf of Arizona, sisters to include Janice (Wallace) Matheson and Susan (Gart) Weisenberger of Illinois, and many nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday, November 16, 2004 with Reverend Canon Ray Clark and Reverend Dave Duprey. Marvin Ray Trieber, 47, of Sheridan, WY, died Thursday, November 18, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Trieber was born June 2, 1957 in Clarkston, WA to Larry A. and Leah L. (Schumacher) Trieber. He grew up and attended schools in the Clarkston-Lewiston area. Mr. Trieber moved to Newcastle, WY and worked for R.E.N.E.W. for a short period before moving to Sheridan in 1991. Marvin worked for R.E.N.E.W. in Sheridan as a furniture refurbisher before ill health forced his retirement. Mr. Trieber enjoyed fishing, camping in the mountains, working on cars, woodworking, and making models. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother. Marvin is survived by 2 brothers, Dan Lee Trieber, Sr., of Sheridan, WY, and Larry Lawrence Trieber, of Lewiston, ID; and 2 sisters, Diana Liming, of Boise, ID, and Sharon Trieber, Yakima, WA; 2 nephews; and 1 niece. officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Evelyn M. Weisz, 82, of Ranchester, WY, died Thursday, November 11, 2004 of natural causes in Westview Health Care Center. Mrs. Weisz was born August 22, 1922 on the family homestead at Cohagen, MT to Alexander and Cuma (Shearer) Ogilvie. She was the 5th of 7 children. She grew up and attended elementary school in Cohagen. Evelyn moved to Greeley, CO where she attended high school, graduating from Greeley High School in 1941. After high school, Mrs. Weisz married and traveled during W. W. II. In 1944 Mrs. Weisz settled in Ranchester, WY where she lived on the Tongue River for the next 60 years. Evelyn went to work at the V. A. Hospital in Sheridan in 1963 in nursing services, retiring in 1991. Mrs. Weisz was one of the original founding members of the Ranchester Women’s Club, and was active in scouting and various youth organizations. She loved the out-of-doors, quilting, and card playing. However, she was a very private person and her primary interest in life was spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters. Evelyn is survived by one son, John Weisz, (Carole) of Sheridan, WY; 1 brother, Alex Ogilvie, of Sheridan, WY; one sister, Edith Opshal, of Dayton, WY; and 3 grandchildren. At Mrs. Weisz request, cremation has taken place, and a Memorial service will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, November 18, 2004 at the First Congregational Church with George Tellez officiating. P. O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801 Harold Wayne Wood, also known as "Slim" and "Woody", passed away on Friday, November 12, 2004, at Sheridan Manor after losing his battle with cancer. He was born in Wilmore, KS, on February 24, 1924, to John P. and Erma M. (Fox) Wood, the fourth of eight children. Slim and his family moved to Wyoming during the Great Depression to join his grandparents on the homestead near Moorcroft. After moving to Sheridan, he left Sheridan High School in 1941 to serve in the U.S. Navy as an aviation machinist’s mate on board the USS Lexington. He survived the Battle of the Coral Sea, where his ship was sunk by the Japanese. He was honorably discharged in 1947 after serving at various naval posts until the war’s end. On July 14, 1945, he and Arline Ellsworth were married in Billings, Montana. Slim and Arline raised their three children in Sheridan, and have resided in Sheridan to the present date. Woody was a master machinist, working at the Sheridan Iron Works nearly 30 years, before opening his own machine shop, Western Steel, until his retirement in 1995.
He was very active in the Masonic bodies, becoming Master of Big Horn Mountain Lodge # 43 in 1965. He was active in the Kalif Shrine, Eastern Star, Scottish and York Rite and Royal Order of the Jesters. He was a Legionnaire and a member of the V.F.W. Woody was an avid sportsman who enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in the Big Horns and hadn’t missed an elk hunting season since 1947. He loved to fish in the Big Horns and on the Winnipeg River in Canada. He and Arline loved to travel and enjoyed every adventure they undertook together. His grandchildren and his dogs were a continuing source of joy to him. He loved gardening and working with his hands. His experiences in World War II were often a subject of his conversations. One of his happiest moments was his graduation from Sheridan High School in 2002 with two of his grandchildren, after his high school education was interrupted by World War II. Slim was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Arlene Grooms and Virginia Bright. He is survived by his wife, Arline; his daughter Darlene Gilkey; and his two sons, Ron and Bob Wood all of Sheridan. He is also survived by a brother, Jack of El Cajon, CA, and four sisters, Eleanor Rinker of Rialto, CA, Dorothy Grooms, Gertrude Cordray and Margaret Torrens all of Sheridan. There are twelve grandchildren: Melanie Baker, Jamey, Gregg and Matt Gilkey, Erica, Emily, Erin, and Ethan Wood, and Amy, Shelbi, Derek and Bradley Wood. His great-grandchildren are Nate Baker, Sarah Zimmerman, and Riley, Shaun, Ashlee, Jacob and Joshua Gilkey. He recently became a great-great grandfather when Lanie Baker was born. Cremation has taken place and memorial services are at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 16th. Canon Ray Clark and Father David Duprey will officiate. Masonic graveside services and Military Honor Guard follow at the Masonic section of the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. A reception for friends and family will follow at the Kalif Shrine.
