September 2004 OBITUARIES
Betty Lee Cooper, 82, of Gillette, formerly of Sheridan, passed away on Monday, September 6, 2004, at Pioneer Manor in Gillette. Mrs. Cooper was born April 11, 1922, in Sheridan, to Otis and Leona (DeLine) Neuenschwander. She attended Arvada and Sheridan schools and lived in this vicinity for many years before moving to Fresno, CA, in 1975. Betty was employed in nursing service at the Sheridan County Memorial Hospital, the Sheridan V.A. Medical Center, and the Fresno Veterans’ Hospital. While in Sheridan, Betty was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. She joined the Grace United Methodist Church of Fresno in 1989. Betty was past president of Trainman Ladies in Sheridan, a member of Royal Neighbors of American, and VFW Auxiliary #884 in Fresno. Mrs. Cooper married Pete Filbert on October 19, 1938, and they later divorced in 1975. She Married Oscar Cooper of Fresno, CA, in 1975. Following Oscar’s death in 2002, Betty returned to Wyoming to be near family. She resided at the home of her son Ron in Gillette. Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Oscar; and two sisters Constance Neuenschwander and Barbara Jo "Jody" Badgett. She is survived by her four sons, Charles Filbert of Gillette, WY, David Filbert of Sheridan, John Filbert of Pennsylvania, and Gregory Filbert of Dayton, WY; her two sisters, Jean Pennington of Edmones, WA and Sharon Sorchevich of Gary, Indiana; and her eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Charles “Chuck” Forry, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, died Sunday September 12, 2004 at the VA Hospital at age 63, after a six-year battle with cancer. Funeral service will be at 10:00am on Wednesday September 15, 2004 from Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastors Ronald Nelson and Wilbur Holz officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Military rites are by the American Legion and Wyoming National Guard. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Chuck was born April 25, 1941 in Lambert, Montana to Harold and Clara (Mastvelten) Forry. He married his wife, Joyce Wells, of 41 years on June 4, 1963 in Savage Montana. They lived in Baker, Montana until February of 1965 when Chuck was drafted into the service, he served in Vietnam as a combat engineer. In 1969 he and his wife moved to Sheridan, their home of 35 years. Chuck worked for Warehouse Market for 35 years. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a former member of the American Legion and Sheridan Elks Lodge 520. Chuck is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, and a granddaughter. Survivors include his wife Joyce Forry; son and daughter-in-law Todd and Deby Forry of Laramie, Wyoming; son and daughter-in-law Bryan and Bobi Forry of Boca Raton, Florida; daughter Lynn Forry of Prosser, Washington; a brother and sister-in-law Loren and Denise Forry of Aurora, Minnesota; sister and brother-in-law Lorraine and Tom Gillach of Aurora, Minnesota; and a grandson, Shane Charles Forry, of Laramie, Wyoming. Memorials may benefit Ken "Benny" Haratyk, 46, of Sheridan, passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2004. Ken was born on June 21, 1958, in Sheridan to Wilhelm and Elizabeth (Yalowizer) Haratyk. He guided hunters at the NX Bar Ranch for ten years. Benny loved spending time with his family and his dog "Ollie". He enjoyed athletics, hunting, fishing, and golfing. He was an avid sports fan and followed all the Big Horn Rams football and basketball games as well as the Wyoming Cowboys and Denver Broncos.
An informal gathering to celebrate the life of Benny Haratyk will be held on Friday, September 10, 2004 at 2:00 pm at Kane Funeral Home. Come and share your memories of Benny with us. Elmer C. Hillier, 79, of Story, WY, died Tuesday, September 21, 2004 in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Mr. Hillier was born April 19, 1925 in Canuck, Saskatchewan, Canada to Ray N. and Josephine (Dahlman) Hillier. He attended schools in Tabor, Saskatchewan and Malta High School in Malta, MT. Mr. Hillier was a seismograph worker for Young Exploration from 1946 to 1969. Mr. Hillier married Lillian M. Gendron in Baker, MT on October 27, 1956. The couple moved to Story, WY where he owned and operated the Hillier Texaco from 1969 to 1990. He was a volunteer fireman for the Story Fire Department from 1969 to 1991. Mr. Hillier was a member of the Grace Chapel in Story, and enjoyed fishing and camping, and doing maintenance work and home improvements. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister. Mr. Hillier is survived by his wife, Lillian, of Story and Sheridan; two sons, Ronald Hillier, of Las Vegas, NV, and Gerald Hillier, of West Yellowstone, MT; one brother, Alvin L. Hillier, of Boulder, MT; 4 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild. Funeral services for Mr. Hillier will be 11:00 A.M. Memorials in memory of Mr. Hillier may be made to the Grace Chapel, Box 55, Story, WY 82842 Byron "Bud" Wilbur Lindstrom, 70, of Sheridan, passed away on Sunday, September 19, 2004, at Sheridan County Memorial Hospital. Byron was born on September 24, 1933, in Sheridan, WY, to Walter and Irene Mills Lindstrom. He loved his family, hunting fishing and spending time with friends and family. He played football for the Sheridan Broncs from 1950-1953 and at the University of Wyoming from 1954-1955. Byron served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. He worked for Peter Kiewit construction and as a heavy equipment operator at Decker and Big Horn coal mines. Bud was a member of the Elk Lodge #520 and the American Legion. Mr. Lindstrom was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Walt Lindstrom, two sisters Irene Harzke and Lucille Lindstrom. He is survived by three daughters Melanie Neuman of Sheridan, Wyoming, Jean Lindstrom of Catawba, North Carolina, Joan Lindstrom of Rapid City, South Dakota, six grandchildren Timothy Lee, Ashley Lee , Nicholas Neuman, Spencer Brown, Anthony Brown, Mc Kenzie Lindstrom and a long time friend Sandy Merrill. Funeral services will be held 11:00am Wednesday September 22, 2004 at Kane Funeral Home with the Sheridan Elk Lodge #520 officiating. A reception will follow at the Elk Lodge #520 in Sheridan. Loomis, 87, of Big Horn, WY, died Sunday, September 5, 2004 in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Mr. Loomis was born June 6, 1917 in Murray, IA to Ralph and Elsie (Bierma) Loomis. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in St. Mary’s, IA. Wendell married his high school sweetheart Wyla Elaine Jacobs in Indianola, IA on February 26, 1941. The couple moved to WY in the fall of 1941 and worked for Ralph Wiley on Prairie Dog Creek for 4 years. They later moved to Big Horn where Wendell became the dairyman for Goelet Gallatin at the Gallatin Ranch. The ranch sold the dairy herd and developed a Hereford cow calf operation. Wendell became the foreman of the ranch and later bought all of the cattle and machinery and leased to ranch until his retirement in 1984. Wendell was ditch rider for the Last Chance ditch for several years and continued to serve as a ditch rider until his death. Wendell was very involved in community projects in Big Horn. He was a charter member of the Big Horn Lions Club where he served as President. He was a 4-H leader for many years, a member of the Big Horn’s Volunteer Fire Department, and served on the board of the Mt. Hope Cemetery Board in Big Horn. Mr. Loomis loved to build cabinets, knick-knack boxes, planters, and was the primary architect for a mountain cabin. He loved to fish and hunt with his family and ride his four-wheeler to the cabin. Wendell was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers. He is survived by his wife, Wyla, of Big Horn, 2 sons, Dennis Loomis, of Big Horn, and Marion, (Judith) Loomis, of Cheyenne, WY; 4 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation for Mr. Loomis will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Jason J. “Jim” Majszak, age 35 of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, September 6, 2004, in his Sheridan home. Jim was born January 23, 1969, in Petoskey, Michigan, to John & Theora (Evans) Majszak. Jim moved to Bozeman, MT in 1972 with his family. They moved to Sheridan in 1977 and he graduated from Sheridan High School. He received his CAN and worked for Sheridan Manor and RENEW. He then worked for Rail Link at Spring Creek and Decker coal mines as crew leader loading coal trains. Jim enjoyed fishing, going to the mountains, four wheeling, motorcycles and going to Wal Mart. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. Jim is survived by his daughter Nikki of Sheridan; his parents of Sheridan; brothers Greg of Johnstown, CO, Matt of Ranchester, WY, and Monty of Thornton, CO; sisters Lisa Majszak of Billings, MT, Kristy Szmul of Plano, TX and Mary Ann Dexter of Canon City, CO. Funeral liturgy will be 10:15am on Friday (Sep. 10th) from Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Larry Fedor officiating. Cremation will follow the service. 82801 Margie Miller, age 73 of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, September 20, 2004, in her Sheridan home. She was born February 1, 1931, in Sheridan County to Roy & Maude ( Conner) Endicott. She grew up in Sheridan County and attended Sheridan schools. She married Lawrence Miller on December 19, 1953. They ranched on Pass Creek until they retired. Lawrence died in 2003. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends and going to the Senior Center. She loved being with her grandchildren. She is survived by her son Everett of Parkman, WY; daughters Marilyn King of Eagle Point, OR, Karen Spaulding of Sheridan, Nancy Gehm of Rapid City, SD, Jeannie Crabtree of Billings, MT and Peggy Persinger of Billings, MT; and 16 grandchildren. Memorial service will be 2:00pm on Friday (Sep. 24th) from Family Life Center with the Pastor Kent Bahruth officiating. Interment of cremains will be in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Her long battle with a severe illness will be a constant inspiration to everyone who knew her. She was born to Harry and Bonnie Fort on Sept 3rd, 1950 in Spearfish South Dakota. She was married to Harold Newbrough of Sheridan and Rawlins Wyoming. Ritter, 74, of Sheridan, passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2004, at Westview Health Care Center. Mrs. Betty Ritter was born on May 22, 1930, in Buffalo to Edward and Fannie (Winigar) Lytle. She married Robert Ritter in Buffalo on September 6, 1947 and the couple raised five children together. Prior to their move to Sheridan in 1982 they also lived in Texas, Nebraska, California, Colorado, and other parts of Wyoming. Betty enjoyed cooking for and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also liked sewing, motorcycle riding, reading, and watching old movies. Mrs. Ritter was preceded in death by her parents; her four brothers, Charles Lytle, George Lytle, Warren Lytle, and Roy Lytle; one sister Elenore Mae Baker; and a grandson Hazen Trevor Ritter. She is survived by her husband of 57 years Robert "Bob" Ritter; her son George Ritter; her four daughters, Ardy Aerni, Alice "Binji" Bartes, Amy Powell, and Becky Moody; her eight grandchildren; and her three great-grandchildren. A public viewing will be held at Kane Funeral Home from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8, 2004. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 9, 2004, with Pastor John Jackson officiating. Irene Clara Wilson, 76, of Sheridan passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2004, at Westview Health Care Center.
Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by her husband, James of Sheridan; her four sons, Steve Overgaard and his wife Tammy of Sarasota, FL, Alan Wilson and his wife Karyn of Chattanooga, TN, David Wilson of Sheridan, and Thomas Wilson of Sheridan,; her daughter, Kathryn Harrison and her husband James of Sheridan; her eleven grandchildren, Amanda Malyurek, Jacob Harrison, Pam Aho, Jeff Overgaard, Kayla Wilson, A.C. Wilson, Samantha Wilson, Jason Wilson, Jandy Wilson, Josh Morris, and Daryl Wing; her five great-grandchildren; and her 3 close friends, Denice Rollins, Rosie Justice, and Mary Emme. Cremation has taken place locally in Sheridan and memorial services will be held at Holy Name Catholic Church on Saturday, October 2, 2004 at 10:00am with The Reverend Ron Stolcis officiating.
