John was born October 27,1917, in Sheridan to Paul & Anna (Rucki) Byrtus. John grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan. He was attending Parks Business College in Denver when he enlisted in the Air Force in January 1942, and attended Officer’s Training School. While stationed in Washington, DC, he met Ethel Beazley of Bowling Green, VA and they were married on May 21, 1944 in DC. Captain Byrtus was released from the Air Force in March 1946. He received his degree in accounting from the University of Denver and returned to Sheridan. Four years later he was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He served from October 1950, to November 1952, and was released with the rank of Major. The family returned to Sheridan and John received his CPA certificate in July 1954 and had his own practice until his retirement John served on the Board of Directors of the Wyoming Certified Public Accountants for five years, serving one year as President. He also served on the Wyoming Board of Certified Public Accountants for six years, serving as president two years. Honorary membership is given to CPAs who have been members of the AICPA for forty years. John was a life member of the Elks Lodge #520, a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, a past President of Stevens Fryberger & Company and a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. John was preceded in death by infant son Ronald Lee and son John Alan; two sisters Helen and Emeline; and two brothers Joe and Paul. John is survived by his wife Ethel of Sheridan; sons Paul of Falls Church, VA, Robert of Bend, OR, Donald of Highlands Ranch, CO; daughters Jeanette Mackey of Federal Way, WA and Patricia Clabaugh of Juneau, Alaska; two sisters Anne Byrtus and Stella Withrow both of Sheridan; six grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Vigil service will be 7:00pm on Sunday (Aug. 22nd) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral liturgy will be 10:00am on Monday from Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Thomas Ogg officiating. Mrs. Dwinell was born April 12, 1948 in Worland, WY, to John Washington and Helen (Richards) Boyles. She grew up and attended schools in Worland, and married Claude E. Dwinell July 17, 1976 in Worland. The couple moved to Buffalo, WY in 1978, and then to Sheridan in 1986. Mrs. Dwinell was a housewife, and a baker and checker at the Sheridan Safeway. She loved to go to Deadwood, SD, enjoyed playing Bingo, camping, Sci-fi T.V., watching “horror flicks”, and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her mother, 1 brother, and an infant sister. Mrs. Dwinell is survived by her husband, Claude, of Sheridan; 1 daughter, Christine Kitson, of Phoenix, AZ; her father and step-mother, John and Emma Boyles, of Buffalo, WY; 1 brother, Louie Pfrangle, of Worland, WY; 2 sisters, Deb Slaybough, of Buffalo, WY, and Lavonda Lookhart, Casper, WY; 4 grandchildren; 3 sister-in-laws; 6 nephews; and 8 nieces. Cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Service for Mrs. Dwinell will be held at 2:00 P.M. Memorials in memory of Mrs. Dwinell may be made to the Sheridan Church of Christ, 1769 Big Horn Ave., Sheridan, WY 82801 Elmo Eisele, 89, of Sheridan, died Friday afternoon, August 20, 2004, in the Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. at Kane Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Elmo was born in Oklahoma, January 15, 1915, to William and Leon (Foster) Eisele. He graduated from High School in Gillette, Wyoming. He married Nila Mapel March 30, 1935. Elmo worked at the Wydak Coal Mine for 6 years. They sold their home in Gillette, Wyoming, and moved to Vancouver, Washington, where he worked at the Kaiser Shipping Yard for 3 years as a gantry crane operator. After World War II, the couple moved back to Sheridan, where they leased and operated Coffeen Service Station. Elmo did custom dirt work for farmers and ranchers in Sheridan and Campbell Counties for many years, and worked for Kendrick Cattle Company for 31 years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Sheridan, and a member of the Good Sam’s. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home with the Good Sam’s, where he and his wife put in many miles traveling cross-country with friends. In his leisure time, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his many great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Barten (wife Shirley) of Billings, MT, and Robert of Sheridan; his brother Glenn of Buffalo, WY; his six grandchildren; his twenty great-grandchildren; and his seven great-great-grandchildren. Ghikas, age 81 of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, August 9, 2004, in St. Vincent Health Care, Billings, MT She was born December 31, 1922, in Sheridan to James & Marie (Evangeline) Matthews She grew up and graduated high school in Sheridan. She graduated from Business College and went to work for the General Accounting Office in Washington, DC. Venus married George Ghikas (whom she met at his father’s restaurant where she lunched in Washington) on November 7, 1943, in Sheridan. They lived in Sheridan where they owned and operated the Palace Café until 1987 when she retired. She enjoyed collecting angels, Mickey Mouse memorabilia, dolls and stuffed animals. Venus was always faithful to visit her friends in the hospital and nursing home. She was a 50 year member and Worthy Matron of Order of the Eastern Star Naomi Chapter #2, Grand Electra of the Grand Lodge of Wyoming. She was a member of Daughters of the Nile Sahida Temple #86, Nile Patrol, Sheridan Women’s Club, Sheridan County Homemakers, American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Peter and sister Margaret. Venus is survived by her husband George; daughter Marie Herman & husband Larry of Laurel, MT; grandson Dr. George Carter; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Trisagion Memorial Service will be 7:00pm on Monday (Aug. 16th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Harvey was born March 18, 1935 in Sapporo, Japan, to Hachiro and Hina Shimokawara. She grew up and attended schools in Japan. Mrs. Harvey met and married Frank Daniel Harvey March 19, 1952 in the Military Chapel in Sapporo, Japan. They came to the United States to Washington State in 1954 where they lived for a short period of time before moving to Kirby, MT. The couple moved to Lame Deer, MT in 1955. The Harvey’s moved to Gillette, WY in 1967, living there until 1978 when they moved to Sheridan. The couple lived in Sheridan for 2 years, then moved to the Kirby, MT area. The Harvey’s celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in March of 2002. Mr. Harvey died in December of 2002, and Mrs. Harvey moved to Sheridan. Mrs. Harvey was a past member of the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and the Salvation Army. She enjoyed cooking, rock collecting, knitting, crocheting, making quilts and clothing, fishing, gardening, her house plants, swimming, watching high school sports, carving walking sticks, clay sculpturing, visiting with neighbors and friends, and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and several siblings. She is survived by 4 sons, Frank, Fred, and John D. Harvey, all of Gillette, WY, and Milton P. Harvey, of Sheridan, WY; 1 daughter, Marcella A. Miller, of Douglas, WY; 13 grand children; and 4 great grand children. Funeral services for Mrs. Harvey will be 1:00 P. M. Saturday, August 14, 2004 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Terral Bearden officiating. Burial will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Mrs. Hauber was born November 4, 1945 in Bozeman, MT to Walter Raymond and Dorothy (Larson) Brainard. She grew up in the Bozeman area and attended schools at Maudlow and Manhattan, MT graduating from High School in 1963. She then attended Kinman Business College in Spokane, WA. Mrs. Hauber married Ivan Hauber October 25, 1968 in Bozeman, MT. She worked for the Yellowstone Park Company in Gardner, MT before moving to Sheridan, WY where she was the office manager for Piedmont Psychological Practice. Mrs. Hauber was involved with the Girl Scouts while her children were growing up. She enjoyed horseback riding, camping, fishing, and spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Hauber is survived by her husband, Ivan, of Sheridan; one son, Preston Hauber, (Andrea) of Sheridan; one daughter, Tia Williams, (David) of Buffalo, WY; two brothers, Ron Brainard, (Donna), and Lynn Brainard, (Mae), all of Belgrade, MT; and 5 grandchildren. At Mrs. Hauber’s request, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service for Mrs. Hauber will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Bank, P. O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801 Judith H. Hornbeck, 65, of Sheridan, WY, died Sunday, August 8, 2004 in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Mrs. Hornbeck was born July 7, 1939 in Hanna, WY to LeRoy H. and Evelyn (Christensen) Hansen. She grew up and attended grade school in Elk Mountain, WY, graduating from Hanna High School in 1957. Judy then attended the University of Wyoming receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1961. Judy taught elementary school in Rawlins, WY from 1962 to 1964. She married John (Jack) Hornbeck in the Episcopal Church in Rawlins, WY August 23, 1964. Judy taught school for 2 years in Berthoud, CO before moving to Green River, WY where she taught in the school district there for 2 years. She then became a stay-at-home mom for the next 18 years raising 2 boys. During this time, Judy was a substitute teacher in the Sheridan School District for several years. Since 1986, her time has been spent living in Sheridan during the winter months with summertime being spent at the family ranch near Elk Mountain, WY. Mrs. Hornbeck was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Sheridan where she was active in the women’s groups of St. Peter’s, including the Vestry and Alter Guild, and St. Margaret’s. Judy was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Daughters of the Nile in Hanna, a Past President of Chapter AB, P.E.O., Sheridan, a member of Preceptor Tau of Beta Sigma Phi, and the Sheridan Genealogy Club, the Sheridan Doll Club and the Red Hat Society. Judy enjoyed antiques, doll collecting, her yard work, supporting the University of Wyoming basketball and football programs, dish collecting, family history, and spending time with her dog and her family. Mrs. Hornbeck was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn Hansen in 1997. Judy is survived by her husband, John Hornbeck, of Sheridan, WY; 2 sons, Scott Hornbeck, of Fort Collins, CO, and David Hornbeck, wife Kim, & 1 new grand daughter, Mattie Hornbeck, who was born July, 31, 2004, all of Casper, WY; 1 brother, William Hansen, and wife, Dee, of Houston, TX; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation for Judy will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday, August 9th, 2004, and from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 10th, 2004 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. St. Sheridan, WY 82801 George Koltiska, age 83 of Sheridan, WY, died August 7, 2004. He was born July 7, 1921, at the family ranch on Upper Cat Creek east of Sheridan to Paul & Marie (Orros) Koltiska. George attended the Prairie Dog School. He joined the Marine Corps in 1942 at the beginning of WWII and after boot camp was shipped to the South Pacific where he served for 3 years, 9 months and 18 days. He married Lena Welch on September 14, 1946, at the home of her sister, Margaret Pilch, on Lower Prairie Dog. George and Lena mad their home on the their ranch on Cat Creek where they raised four children and where George resided until his death. George and his brother Paul purchased Mulholland Machinery in 1956 and renamed it KB Tractor Company. George was on the ASCS Board, the Farm Home Administration Board, and was one of the main organizers of the Certified Seed Program in Sheridan County. He was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge #520 and a member of the American Legion. George was a lifelong member of Holy Name Catholic Church and a Fourth Degree Knight. George loved music. He played the fiddle in a band with his brother Paul, Slim Peterson and Olin Fowler. George loved jam sessions with friends and family. George loved family. His abundant love was not only shared with his wife, children, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren but with his brothers, sister, nieces and nephews. Throughout his lifetime he believed that family was more important than anything else was. Family gatherings were his happiest times. George was preceded in death by his parents, two infant brothers, and brothers Mike, John, Paul and a sister Elizabeth Briggs Speath. He is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Lena; children Audrey Koltiska, Gary (Vicki), Deborah Adams (Warren) and Robert (Dawn); grandchildren Tom “TJ” Koltiska, Travis, Jason & Justin Koltiska, Genie Adams Mayfield and Trent Adams, Kristi, Megan 7 Brandon Koltiska; great grandchildren Gabrielle & Paden Koltiska, Sadie Koltiska, Patrick & Makayla Mayfield and numerous nieces and nephews. Vigil service will be 7:00pm on Tuesday (Aug. 10th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home. to purchase trees to be planted in Sheridan County. Gerald T. "Jerry" Laya, 77 of Ranchester, passed away at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County on Thursday, August 19, 2004. Mr. Laya was born September 7, 1927, in Kooi, WY, to Joe and Mary Laya. He attended school in Acme and graduated from Sheridan High School. Following high school, he served in the Army then went on to the University of Wyoming to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. He married Suzanne Williams, his wife of fifty-two years. The couple had three children together, Gary Laya, Steven Laya, and Deb Laya Johnston. Jerry was best known for his years at V.C. Johnston Lumber Co. and as the owner of Country Gardens in Ranchester. He was a member of the Ranchester Rotary Club. Jerry served the town of Ranchester as a councilman for many years and one term as mayor. He was an avid fly fisherman and hunted upland birds, but his true passion was gardening.
Cremation has taken place locally in Sheridan, and a Celebration of Life with special dedication will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 28, 2004, in the Ranchester Park with Pastor Dan Keller officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.
Pearl was born March 9, 1909, in Texas to Thomas & Sena (Armstrong) Wright. The family came to Wyoming in 1919 and she graduated from Sheridan High School in 1927. She married Joseph Lucas in Billings, MT, on May 23, 1936. During WWII, she worked in defense and they moved to California. They returned to Sheridan in the 1960’s and she was manager of Ilene’s Dress Shop and a clerk in several other stores until she retired. Pearl was a member of the Sheridan Wesleyan Church and Eastern Star. She loved reading, raising flowers and visiting with friends. Her parents, husband, sister and brother preceded her in death. Pearl is survived by a niece and many friends. Memorial service will be 2:00pm on Thursday (Aug. 19th) from Sheridan Wesleyan Church with Pastor Chuck Lucas officiating. W. Brundage Lane, Sheridan Emery E. Matthews, 86 of Sheridan passed away at his residence on Saturday, August 28, 2004. Mr. Matthews was born onOctober 30, 1917, in Grand Island,
Nebraska to Norman and Martha (Underhill) Matthews. In 1937 he met Betty
LaRue Burke at the Baptist Church in Grand Island and they would later
be married in 1941. He was a member of the Nebraska National Guard. He
joined the Army Air Corps in 1940 and was assigned to the 490th Bomb Squadron
known as the "Burma Bridge Busters". Emery fought in WWII and
was stationed in The China, Burma, India Theater. Following his military
service, Emery went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration as
an air traffic controller, and after many years he retired from civil
service. Emery loved his church, family, and country. He enjoyed traveling,
music, dancing, reading, swimming, walking, fishing, and hunting. He loved
watching sports on T.V. Emery was a lifetime member of the Story Lions
Club and the Elks Lodge and was also a member of the Big Horn Mountain
Masonic lodge No. 43 and the Kalif Shrine. Cremation has taken place locally in Sheridan and Memorial services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Friday, September 3, 2004 at 1:00 pm with Pastor Doug Melius officiating.
Merle M. Persinger, age 75, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, August 9, 2004, in the V.A. Medical Center, Sheridan. He was born on November 25, 1928, in Glendale, CA, to Orlo & Margaret (Scott) Persinger. Melvin grew up and graduated high school in Wheatland, WY. He attended Technical College. He enlisted in the Army during the Korean War. After the service, Melvin lived in California where he met and married Delores Conforti in 1956. He worked construction until working in engineering for L.M. Cox. He worked at L.M. Cox until he retired in 1974 when he moved to Sheridan. Merle enjoyed hunting, fishing and gun collecting and was a member of the American Legion. Melvin is survived by his two sons Kim Persinger of Billings, MT and Jim Persinger of Cartersville, GA; and five grandchildren. Private committal service will be later. Jeri B. Saunders, 62 of Sheridan passed away at Deaconess Medical Center in Billings, MT on Monday, August 23, 2004. Mrs. Saunders was born March 27, 1942, in Basin, Wyoming, to Henry and Viola (Breen) Wilmot. She attended school in Upton, Wyoming and graduated from Upton High School. Jeri went on to graduate from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelors Degree with honors. She married W.G. "Jerry" Saunders on June 9, 1963 in Casper, Wyoming. Jeri taught in Denver, Colorado for three years until her husband finished medical school. The two lived in Albuquerque, NM for a year, Anchorage, Alaska for three years, back to Albuquerque for another three years then to Sheridan in 1973. Jeri began substitute teaching in Sheridan after her children started school. She went to teaching full time when the school district implemented the gifted and talented program for the students which she taught until her retirement. Jeri enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren, reading, and spending time at their cabin in the Big Horn Mountains. She was a member of the P.E.O., the Red Hat Society, and the Presbyterian Women’s Circle. Jeri was on the board of directors of Family Planning of the Big Horns and an elder at First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Saunders was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Dr. W.G. Saunders of Sheridan; her three daughters, Brenda Sauro and her husband Greg of Woodbury, MN, Wendy Murray and her husband Mike and Stacy Sweeney and her husband Mike both of Sheridan; her seven grandchildren, Janika, Ellison, and Kael Sweeney, Brad and Michael Sauro, and McKenzie and Easton Murray; her brother, Bill Wilmot of Missoula, Montana; and her sister, Joyce Mangus of Mesa, Arizona. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, August 27, 2004 at the First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Doug Melius officiating.
Anne Kukuchka Smith passed away peacefully on August 5, 2004 surrounded by many members of her family. Anne was born in Kooi, Wyoming, the first daughter to George and Anna Banas Kukuchka on October 6, 1922. She attended grade school in Kooi until 5th grade, she then completed her education in Ranchester where her family purchased a ranch. While in highschool she was a member of the state champion Ranchester Rustlers basketball team. On July 17, 1939 she married Charles H. Smith in Hardin, Montana. This marriage was later blessed at Saint Thomas Catholic Church in Monarch. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Antoinette (Toni) Davis, Charles E. (Ed) Smith, Theresa (Teri) Luskin, and John M. Smith. Anne had nine grandchildren, Stuart Davis of Boise, ID, Gregory Davis of Soldotna, AK, Matthew Davis of Banner, WY, Kristen Luskin DelNegro of Richland, WA, Andrew Luskin of Saratoga Springs, NY, Melissa and Kellie Smith of Buckingham, PA, Meghan Smith of Kotzebue, AK, and Alicia Smith of Sheridan. She also had two great grandchildren, Claire Davis of Boise, ID, and Olivia Davis of Soldotna, AK. In her younger days Anne loved to spend her time fly fishing, she also loved to collect recipes and cook and create her own dishes. She was well known for her hospitality and wonderful cooking. Her flowers were a special joy to her, and during Christmas her house was always beautifully decorated, especially her Christmas trees. Anne was employed for many years as a cook at the Ranch House in Ranchester and also at the Golden Steer in Sheridan, until her retirement at the age of 78. She was well known for her wonderful and unique soups. She was an avid sports fan, following basketball and football for the Tongue River Eagles and Wyoming Cowboys. She also enjoyed attending the sporting events of her grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband, and four brothers, George (Curly), John, Paul, and Edward Kukuchka. She is survived by her children and grandchildren, and the following brothers and sisters, Andy Kukuchka of Big Horn, Michael Kukuchka of Sheridan, Helen Fagenbush of Salt Lake City, UT, and Margaret Melton of Sheridan. Also, her friend and companion Peaches. She was greatly loved and will be missed by her family and friends. A rosary will be held at 7:00pm on Monday, August 9, 2004 at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at Holy Name Catholic Church with The Reverend Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Sweigert, 93, of Sheridan, WY, died Sunday, August 22, 2004 in Sheridan Manor. Mrs. Sweigert was born February 19, 1911 in Park Ridge, IL to Charles William and Alyce E. (Snyder) Potter. She grew up and attended schools in Park Ridge, and graduated from Alvernia High School in Chicago in 1928. Mrs. Sweigert married Clarence James Sweigert in IL in 1930, and she spend her lifetime in IL, working as a business woman for the Chicago Board of Education, the Theater Arts Magazine, and the Northbrook Weekly Magazine in Northbrook, IL. She was a member of A.A.R.P, and the Catholic Church. Mrs. Sweigert enjoyed sewing, handcrafts, art, and very accomplished at crocheting, which was displayed at Sheridan Manor. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. Mrs. Sweigert was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clarence, and two sisters. She is survived by 1 daughter, Marilyn C. Fischer, (Kenneth) of Sheridan, WY; 1 son, Robert James Sweigert, (Rosemary) of Columbia, TN; 4 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and 2 step great grandchildren. Manor, 1851 Big Horn Ave., Sheridan, WY 82801 August G. Talcott, 93, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, August 23, 2004 in Sheridan Manor. Mr. Talcott was born April 7, 1911 in Central Valley, New York to August Belmont and Marguerite ( Schick) Talcott. The family moved to Sheridan when he was 3 years old, and Mr. Talcott spent his entire life in the Sheridan area painting with his father and brothers, and later with his son, which became known as A. G. Talcott and Son Painting. August retired in 1977. Mr. Talcott married Dorothy Brenner in Sheridan on February 14, 1934. August was a member of the Painter’s and Drywall Finisher’s Union. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and woodworking. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, 1 grandchild, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters. Mr. Talcott is survived by one son, Ronald Talcott, of Everett, WA; 7 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. Funeral service for Mr. Talcott will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 26, 2004 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. WY, died Friday, August 13, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Willis loved taking rides in the mountains looking for wildlife, especially moose, fishing, and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harold, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, 1 son, and 1 grandson. Mrs. Willis is survived by 2 sons; John Farran, of Kewanee, IL, and Robert Farran, of Sheridan, WY; 1 daughter, Vicki Peterson, of Booneville, IN; 1 brother, Richard Whiles, of Coal Valley, IL; 1 sister, Lena Lyle, of Sheridan, WY; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
