April 2004 OBITUARIES
Lavorna Benedict, 89, of Sheridan, passed away on Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Sheridan Manor, after a struggle with cancer. Lavorna was born on December 31, 1914, in a two-room homestead cabin on Spring Creek, near Kirby, Montana. She was the fourth of six children born to Andrew and Anna Helton. Lavorna was schooled at Spring Creek School and in Sheridan, leaving high school in her sophomore year to join the work force in the depth of the Great Depression. She worked as a housekeeper, nursemaid, kitchen helper, and cook on ranches in the Sheridan area and in Montana. She met her husband, George Benedict, while working at the Quarter Circle U Ranch at Birney, Montana. After their marriage in 1940, they worked in cow camps for the Cox Ranch, farmed briefly at Birney, and then worked for several ranches in Montana and Wyoming. Upon retirement, Lavorna and her husband spent fifteen winters in Arizona, returning to Wyoming in the summers to work part time at the Folly Ranch in the Big Horns. In 1985 they settled in Sheridan. Lavorna made friends easily and leaves many behind. She enjoyed life, lived it fully, and had few regrets. Lavorna belonged to several social groups, including the "Saddle Bags" and the "Wild Bunch" in Sheridan. She liked small craft projects and was an excellent bead worker. In recent years she taught some craft classes at the Senior Center in Sheridan. Mrs. Benedict was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers and a sister; her husband, George Benedict; and her son, Earl Benedict. She is survived by her son Les Benedict and his wife Maxine of Helena, MT; her granddaughter Elaine Benedict of Helena, MT; her grandson Brian Benedict stationed in Iraq; her two great-granddaughters Rachel and Michelle Benedict of WA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place locally. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2004, at Kane Funeral Home with Hayden Porter officiating. Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made in Lavorna’s name to the Sheridan Senior Center in care of Brenda Torrens or Nicole Christensen, Community First Bank, P.O. Box 9000, Sheridan ,WY 82801. George J. Buszkiewic, 80, of Ash Creek, passed away on Friday, April 9, 2004, at his residence after a long battle with cancer with his family at his side.
Ronald P. Germann, 80, of Sheridan, passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at his residence. Services are pending. Ronald was born on October 4, 1923, in Jackson, WY, to Walter and Pearl (Thacker) Germann. He married Elsie Burr, formerly of Rozet, on December 7, 1957 in Sheridan and raised three children together. Ron grew up in Moran, Wyoming and moved to Sheridan in 1940. He lived with his brother A.F. (Hap) Germann and his family while he finished high school. He then worked for Hap who owned the Birney Freight Lines and then for Germann Gas Service when it was established. In 1977 Ron and Elsie opened Ron’s. L.P. Gas Service and sold the business and retired in 1994. Ron and Elsie spent many winters in Yuma, AZ and a few summers in Alaska and Canada. Ron enjoyed boating, water skiing, fishing, hunting, shooting, playing cards, and especially spending time with his family. Ron was a member of the Arizona Old Time Fiddlers Association, and a lifetime member of the Sheridan County Sportsman’s Association, the National Rifle Association, and the Elk’s Club. Mr. Germann was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Elsie of Sheridan; his two sons, Larry of Sheridan and Gary of Gillette; his daughter, Wanda Ans of Billings, MT; his ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and his brother Oliver Germann of Buffalo.
The family has requested that memorials be made in Ronald’s name to Hospice of the Big Horns in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan , WY 82801. Wilbur Huggins, 89, of Story, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Karen Marie Klinkhammer, 53, of Sheridan, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Karen was born on November 7, 1950, in Kirkland, WA, to Ron and Virginia (Bartley) Dorning. She married Vincent Klinkhammer on December 22, 1978 in Vancouver, WA. Before making their home in Sheridan for the past fifteen years the couple lived in Seattle, WA. Karen loved to fish, camp, and spend time with friends.
Cremation has taken place locally and a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2004, at First Baptist Church. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Charles N. "Lew" Lewallen, 72, of Sheridan, passed away on Friday, April 9, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Margaret Derrickson Logan, Long-time Big Horn Resident, , 92, died Friday, April 16, 2004 in Cheyenne, WY. Mrs. Logan was born February 8, 1912 at her family ranch near Aladdan, WY, to Albert and Christina Derrickson. She graduated from Belle Fourche High School, then continued her education at the University of Wyoming. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in English Education in 1936, and her Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling in 1966. She married Francis Lloyd Logan in Hardin, MT January 31, 1942. Margaret was a classroom teacher, school Principal, a Guidance Counselor, and a partner in the ownership and operation of the Rafter 33 Cattle Company at Big Horn, WY. She was also an author and editor of poetry, and a watercolor artist. Mrs. Logan was an active member of the big Horn Women’s Club, the Big Horn City Historical Society, and the Wyoming Writers group. Mrs. Logan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Francis, in 1993, two sisters, and one brother. She is survived by two sons, Thomas W. Logan, (Debra), of Cheyenne, WY, and Francis T. Logan, (Sheryl), of Rapid City, SD. Graveside services for Mrs. Logan will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 24, 2004 at the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with Father David Duprey officiating. A luncheon will be held at the Big Horn Women’s Club in Big Horn after the service. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mary Lois Mascher, 79, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, April 5, 2004 in Westview Health Care Center. Mrs. Mascher was born June 18, 1924 in Sheridan, WY to John A. and Mary (Burkhart) Webb. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan, and graduated from Sheridan High School. She married Wilbur Mascher July 3, 1942 in Hardin, MT. Mrs. Mascher worked as a Central Supply Technician at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, WA. She was a member of the Women of the Moose. Mrs. Mascher was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband. She is survived by one son, David Mascher, of Tacoma, WA; two daughters, Carol Marler, of Huntersville, NC, and Anita Mascher, Port Townsend, WA; one brother, Jack Webb, of Sheridan, WY; and 2 grandchildren. A memorial service for Mrs. Mascher will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, April 8, 2004 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Bishop John Slaughter officiating. Burial will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801 Elizabeth "Betty" Morton, 78, of Sheridan, passed away on Friday, April 23, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Roger Michael Pitet, age 64, passed away on April 13, 2004, at his residence in Billings, MT. He was born in Sheridan, WY, on March 27, 1940, the son of Dr. Marcel R. Pitet and Monica (Noonan) Pitet. His parents preceded him in death, as did his sister Mary, in August 2000, and his brother Mickey, in January 2003. Roger graduated from Holy Name grade school in Sheridan in 1953, and from Billings Central High School in 1958. He subsequently obtained both a B.A. and Masters degree in English and History at San Francisco State College in California. He began his teaching career at Eastern Montana College in Billings, and then in the San Mateo School District in California for many years before retiring in 1996, at which time he returned to Billings. Roger is survived by his brother Larry of Sheridan, sister Michelle Pitet Rosenthal (Frank) of Sheridan, brother Pay (Lynn) of Cody, WY, nieces Laurie Pitet Canevaro (Mike) of Irvine, CA, Heidi Rosenthal Parker (Shane) of Sheridan, nephews Christopher Pitet (Rebecca) of Lagun Niguel, CA, Colin Pitet, Louis Pitet, brother-in-law Wayne Tennell, and many cousins and friends. Cremation has take place, and memorial services will be held at 11:00a.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at Kane Funeral Home with the Reverend David Duprey officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801. Helen K. Sears, 91, of Sheridan, WY, died Saturday, April 3, 2004 in Westview Health Care Center. Mrs. Sears was born July 11, 1912 in Chicago, IL to Theodore and Eline (Erickson) Carlstron. She grew up and attended schools in Santa Barbara, CA, graduating from Santa Barbara High School. Mrs. Sears then lived in Sweden, and moved back to the United States after W.W. II. She lived in Los Angeles, CA, and Seattle, WA. Mrs. Sears married Melvin R. Sears Sept. 16, 1956 in Las Vegas, NV. Mr. Sears died in 1984. She moved to Sheridan, WY in 1985 where she was living at the time of her death. Mrs. Sears was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband. She is survived by one son, Eric Carlstron, of Austin, TX; one step-son, Doug Sears, of Kent, WA; two step-daughters, Caroline Sears, of Kent, WA, and Linda Baldwin, of Los Angeles, CA; 5 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren; a very special niece and nephew, Dan and Cristine Sears, and numerous other nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place, and no services are planned.
Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. M. Michael Smith, 65, of Bondurant, WY, died Friday, April 9, 2004 in the Sheridan V. A. Medical Center. Mr. Smith was born December 17, 1938 in Forrest City,
IA to Harold S. and Neva (Raimer) Smith. He grew up and attended public
schools in Forrest City, and joined the Navy at the age of 17 stationed
in San Diego, CA. Mr. Smith was an avid student of ancient Middle-Eastern history, enjoyed horseback riding, gun collecting, and loved spending time in the outdoors. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one daughter. He is survived by one son, Jason Smith, and wife, Whitney, of Parker, CO; one daughter, Jennifer Deurloo, and husband, Brian, of Sheridan, WY; 4 brothers; and 5 sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services for Mr. Smith will be held in Loveland, CO at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Medical Center, in care of Carrie Cook, 1898 Fort Rd., Sheridan, WY 82801 Sally Talcott Springer Loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Sally Talcott Springer, 68, of Big Horn, passed away early Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Sheridan Manor after a lengthy illness. Sally was born on October 24, 1935, in Sheridan to Everett and Vera (McNair) Talcott. She graduated from Big Horn High School and also attended Sheridan College. Sally married Charles "Dick" A. Springer on October 30, 1955 and they raised two daughters. She was a member of the Big Horn, Prairie Dog and Banner Women’s Clubs, Daughter’s of the Nile, Job’s Daughters Bethel #27, 4-H Leader for various clubs, Range Writers, Big Horn City Historical Society, Western Writers of America and a supporter of the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library as well as being active with the Bozeman Trail Museum. She was the writer and editor of the monthly newsletter for the Big Horn City Historical Society. Sally was a noted historian of Wyoming and Montana and had some of her writing published in many local, regional, and national publications. She would share her historical and writing knowledge with other budding historians/writers with their endeavors. She was presented an award from the Sheridan County Historical Society for her knowledge , publications, and being a resource for outsiders on the historical aspects of this area. Sally enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, and was an excellent photographer of Native Americans and their cultures as well as wildlife and mountain scenes. She coordinated the Touch and See Group who made books for the blind. Sally was an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church where she also taught Sunday School and worked on the church newsletter, The Crossed Keys. Mrs. Springer was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Dick of Sheridan; her two daughters, Jennifer Butler and her husband David of Crossville, TN and Robin Petroski and her husband Gus of Laramie, WY; her five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; her brother Earl Talcott of Safford, AZ; her eight nieces and nephews; her six aunts and uncles; and numerous cousins. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at Mount Hope Cemetery in Big Horn, Wyoming with Reverend Cannon Ray Clark and Reverend David Duprey officiating. Juanita F. Vinke, 81, of Sheridan, WY, died Friday, April 9, 2004 in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Mrs. Vinke was born October 23, 1922 in Midwest, WY to Loy and Nova Lee (Kelly) Roush. She grew up and attended school in Gillette, WY and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1941. She worked in an ammunitions factory in Portland, OR during W.W. II. Mrs. Vinke returned to Sheridan where she met and married Albert Vinke in 1951. Mrs. Vinke was a nursing assistant at the Sheridan Memorial Hospital and Johnson County Memorial Hospital; and also was a housemother at the Wyoming Girl’s School before opening Juanita’s BarberShop in Sheridan. She was the first female barber in Sheridan. Mrs. Vinke enjoyed barbering, painting, fishing, dancing, music, the flowers in the mountains, and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Mrs. Vinke was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, and 1 grandson. She is survived by one son, Durwin Vinke, of St. Louis, MO; four daughters, Cheryl Robertson, of Tracy, CA, Rhonda Hoyt, Lynnette Vinke, and Marla Vinke, all of Sheridan; one brother, James W. Roush, of Sheridan; one sister, Eileen Farman, of Sheridan; 7 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren. At Mrs. Vinke’s request, cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life for Mrs. Vinke will be at the home of her daughter 2:00 P.M. Friday, April 16, 2004 at 644 1st Ave. W, Sheridan, WY. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Julia L. Yazosky, 83, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, April 12, 2004 in Sheridan Manor. Mrs. Yazosky was born February 15, 1921 in Ranchester, WY to John and Julia (Antonio) Legerski. She grew up and attended school in Big Horn, and worked on a farm on Cruz Creek. Mrs. Yazosky married Henry Yazosky July 7, 1940 in Sheridan and the couple lived in New York, Alaska, and New Mexico before Mrs. Yazosky returned to Wyoming in the 1950’s. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, and enjoyed dancing and playing Bingo. She was preceded in death by her parents and 3 brothers. Mrs. Yazosky is survived by 5 brothers, John, Walter, and Louis, of Sheridan, WY, William, of Wheatland, WY, and Andy, of Casper, WY; 2 sisters, Mary Haratyk, of Boise, ID, and Alma Kilmarx, of Dickson, TN; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation for Mrs. Yazosky will be 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Father William Helvey officiating. Burial will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.
