Frances Louise Ankney, 90, of Sheridan, WY, died Thursday, March 4, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Ankney was born July 25, 1913 in Basin, WY, to Frank C. and Elizabeth (Leahy) Hormel. She attended elementary school in Shell, and attended high school in Greybull, graduating from Greybull High School in 1930. Mrs. Ankney then attended St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in Billings, MT, graduating in 1934. She returned to Basin and worked in the Basin Hospital for a short time before moving to Sheridan in 1937. Mrs. Ankney began working as a registered nurse at the Sheridan V. A. M. C., then went to work at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County for several years, before returning to the V. A. M. C., retiring in the fall of 1973 after 28 years of service. Mrs. Ankney married Elmer Ankney June 10, 1946 in Sheridan, WY. The couple purchased their ranch on Beaver Creek in 1950 where Mrs. Ankney resided until her death. She was a 67 year member of Holy Name Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Altar and Rosary Society, Red Grade Homeowner’s Club, a past member of the Retired Nurse’s Association, a past member of the Beaver Creek School Board, and a former 4-H leader. She enjoyed knitting, needlepoint, crocheting, growing her garden, especially raspberries, and had knitted numerous pairs of mittens and caps for the St. Joseph’s Children’s Home in Torrington. Mrs. Ankney enjoyed spending time with her family, and especially spending time with her grand children and great grandchildren. Mrs. Ankney was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one brother. She is survived by 2 sons, Jim Ankney, (Toni), of Beaver Ck., and Leo Ankney, of Sheridan; 2 daughters, Mary Kay Ankney, of Springfield, OR, and Marie Kallal, (Henry), of Jerseyville, IL; 8 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. Vigil services will be 7:00 P.M. Monday, March, 8, 2004 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral Liturgy will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at Holy Name Catholic Church, with Father Ronald Stolcis as Celebrant. Burial will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Bell, of Sheridan, WY, died Thursday, March 25, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Bell was born October 12, 1930 to James R. and Helen (Thompson) Perkins. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan, graduating from Sheridan High School. She attended college in Bozeman where she received a Bachelor’s degree, then attended Rocky Mountain College in Billings, receiving her Master’s degree. Mrs. Bell was a teacher at Squirrel Creek, Acme schools, and schools in Montana before going to work at the Sheridan V. A. Hospital where she was a Psychologist, retiring in the 1970’s. She married Charles T. (Chuck) Bell in Sheridan in 1952. She was a member of the Cattlewoman’s Association, and numerous art groups. She enjoyed sewing, reading, crossword puzzles, displaying of her husband’s artwork, and spending time with her family. Joanne especially loved children. Mrs. Bell was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one brother. She is survived by one sister, Barbara Lou Jorgenson, of Sheridan, WY; and 19 nieces and nephews. At Mrs. Bell’s request, cremation has taken place, and
there will be a memorial service at a later date. Arrangements are with
Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Albert L. Bonine, 81, of Sheridan, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Sheridan Manor. Albert was born on August 8, 1922, in Hoxie ,KS, to Albert and Lillie (Shafer) Bonine. He married Nellie Virginia (Matheny) in September of 1951. The couple raised two childrent together. Albert enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, reading and doing crossword puzzles. He was active with The Grange in Washington State, Moclips, WA, and Monroe, WA. He was also an active volunteer with local food banks. Mr. Bonine was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his two brothers, Wade and Raymond Bonine; his two sisters, Mildred Hill and Hortense Bonine; and his nephew Leo Hill. He is survived by his son, James Bonine and his wife Sheri of Story; his daughter, Lona Larson and her husband Todd of Monroe, WA; and his seven grandchildren, twenty five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place locally and at Albert’s request
his cremains will be scattered in Brawley, CA, with those of his wife,
Nellie at their favorite place. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Frances F. Dodd, 86, of Sheridan, passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Sheridan Manor. Frances was born on December 29, 1917, in Washoe, Montana to Elmer and Hattie (Cooper) Anderson. She grew up in Parkman, Wyoming, and was school in one-room schools. Following her school years, she worked as a waitress, and married Clarence Bobbitt. The couple’s union was blessed with five children, which they raised in the Sheridan area. They divorced, and she later married Hugh Dodd. The couple moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and they stayed there until Hugh’s death, whereupon Frances returned to Sheridan. She enjoyed square dancing, walking, knitting, and cross-stitching. Mrs. Dodd was preceded in death by her husband Hugh Dodd; her parents Elmer and Hattie Anderson; her four brothers, Tom Anderson, L.L. "Bill" Anderson, Swede Anderson, and Roy Anderson; her sister Raetta Dockstetter; two grandsons; and her son-in-law Eugene Ewalt. She is survived by her three sons, Delmer "Corky" Bobbitt and his wife Bonnie of Texas, Dwaine Bobbitt and his wife Judy of Sheridan, and Bill Bobbitt and his wife Vivian of Bellview, Idaho; her two daughters Joanne Ewalt of Snider, Texas, and Carrol May and her husband Don of Ashland, Montana; her twenty grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and her three sisters, Ethel Sales and Bette Kincaid of California, and Ann Hank Kool of Forsyth, Montana. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Ekis, age 103, of Sheridan, WY, died Friday, March 5, 2004, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. She was born October 31, 1900, in South Wales to Fred & Lily (Wyld) Hoffman. Anna came with her family to the U.S. when she was a young girl. She lived Ohio and Iowa before coming to Sheridan in 1915. She married Percy Chase in 1916 in Sheridan. He was killed in an accident in 1918. She married Charles Ekis in 1920 in Sheridan. Charles died in 1923. She married Jess Ekis in 1926 in Sheridan. Jess died in 1976. Anna enjoyed gardening and raising animals. Anna was also preceded in death by sons Fred Chase and Ed Ekis; 2 infant children; grandson Gary; great granddaughter Krista; three brothers and one sister. Brundage Lane, Sheridan or the Senior Center “Meals on Wheels”, 211 Smith St., Sheridan, WY 82801 Louis Galloway, 70, of Sheridan, passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Louis was born in Wheatland, WY to Reubin Oliver and Mary (Sturdivent) Galloway on January 11, 1934. He attended school in Sheridan at Linden Elementary, Central Junior High and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1952. Louis and Carolyn Wester were married at the Sheridan First Christian Church on September 14, 1952. Afer a brief employment with the State of Wyoming he became and agent with Farm Bureau Insurance where he was employed for thirty five years. He retired as a claims adjuster in 1994. A life long resident of Wyoming, Lou spent most of his life in the Story/Sheridan area. Upon his retirement he and Carolyn spent four summers in the Rapid Creek Cattle Allotment where Lou was the rider for the Connell and Gerber ranches. His hobbies, which he shared with their children and grandchildren, included hunting, fishing, and packing in the Big Horns. Lou had an especially sharp eye for arrowheads and other artifacts; he spent many hours combing plowed fields and hay meadows for additions to his enviable collection. Lou was a member of the Sheridan Wesleyan Church, the Wyoming Historical Society, Sheridan Masonic Lodge #8, Alcoholics Anonymous, and the National Rifle Association. An only child, Lou was preceded in death by his mother and father. He leaves behind his wife, Carolyn, three sons, Louis Edward and his wife Linda Morris Galloway, Chris and his wife Laura Connell Galloway, and Joe and his wife Jane Look Galloway. He is also survived by eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 2, 2004 at Sheridan Wesleyan Church with Pastor Chuck Lucas officiating with interment to follow at the Sheridan Masonic Cemetery. is handling the arrangements. Harold C. Green, 83, of Sheridan, WY, died Thursday, March 11, 2004 in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Mr. Green was born November 20, 1920 in Passaic, WY to Lowell C. and Mary (Kerr) Green, Jr. He grew up and attended schools in the Sheridan area, graduating from Sheridan High School in 1939. He worked on several ranches in the Sheridan area before moving to San Diego, CA where he worked for Consolidated Aircraft Co. Mr. Green joined the U. S. Air Force in 1941 where he was a pilot flying B 17’s in England during W.W. II. He was discharged from the Air Force in 1945 as a 1st Lt. Mr. Green returned to Sheridan where he went to work for the PMA, the Montgomery Wards store in the shoe department, and did carpenter work for several construction companies before going to work for the V.A. Medical Center in the engineering department. Mr. Green retired from the V. A. Medical Center in 1985. He was a life member of Sheridan Elk’s Lodge #520, a member the NRA association for many years, and a member of American Legion John Donald Garbutt Post #7. Mr. Green was an avid hunter, fisherman, loved bowling and playing cribbage. Mr. Green was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters. He is survived by Angele Cetrone, of Sheridan; one brother, Dale Green, of Sheridan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation for Mr. Green will be from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Monday, March 15th, and Tuesday, March 16th, and from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Kawulok of Sheridan, WY, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County after a five-year courageous battle with cancer with her family by her side. Barbara was born February 17, 1936 in Kearney, NB to Dale and Margaret (Crawford) Kriz. She is survived by her husband, Paul J. Kawulok, of Sheridan, WY; one son, Paul Kawulok, of San Jose, CA; three daughters, Barbara Doyle, of Gillette, WY, Joen Huggins, of Story, WY, and Mary Redman, of Sheridan, WY; one brother, Robert Kriz, of Toledo, OR; two sisters, Margaret Kriz, of Chico, CA, and Nancy Waggoner, of Buffalo, WY; 4 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. At Barbara’s request, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. A private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Barbara’s entire life was devoted to giving to family and friends. Her final wish was to help a friend fight and win her battle with cancer. Lundberg, 79, of Sheridan, WY, died Friday, March 19, 2004 in the Sheridan V. A. Medical Center. Mr. Lundberg was born June 16, 1924 in Kimberly, MN to Peter and Betsy (Sogard) Lundberg. He grew up and attended school in Kimberly and High School in Aitken. At the age of 20, he joined the USAF and became a nose gunner on B-24 Liberators for the 461st Bomb Group based out of Italy. His crew completed 35 successful missions over Italy, Austria, and Germany from August 1944 through February 1945. He married Katherine E. Oustad from Duluth, MN on April 21st, 1945 and they farmed on the Kimberly family farm until they moved to Southern California in 1951. He worked as an engineer for the Santa Fe Railroad and later the Western Pacific Railroad in Quincy, CA until he retired in 1986. They traveled extensively in their motorhome after retiring. Don liked to camp, boat, and fish. They volunteered for the US Forest Service as campground hosts at Prune Creek and Sibley campgrounds in the Big Horn Mountains of northern Wyoming for 11 years. Mr. Lundberg was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother. He is survived by his wife, Katherine, of Sheridan, WY; one son, Peter Lundberg, of Oakland, CA; three daughters, Lucionne Homberg, of Laurel, Maryland, Kristin Lundberg, currently in Laos, and Tamara Lundberg Westbrook, of Carbondale, CA; one brother, Gerry Lundberg, of Aitken, MN; one sister, Lorraine Erickson, of Aitken, MN; 4 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services for Mr. Lundberg will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 27, 2004 at Sorenson-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitken, MN. Interment with military honors will be in the Forrest Cemetery, Aitken, MN. Luth, 89, of Pass Creek, WY, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Fred was born May 24, 1914 on the family ranch on Taffner Creek west of Parkman, WY, to William and Bertha (Rohwer) Luth. He grew up and started his ranching life with his mother and uncle on the family ranch, which is still in the family to this day. Fred married Dorothy Needham June 16, 1947 in Sheridan. Fred became the ranch manager for the X-X Ranch on Pass Creek in 1952, and was still living at the X-X Ranch at the time of his death. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters, Maria Souder, Kay Luth, and Pen Schunk. He is survived by his wife, Dee, of Pass Creek; two daughters, Gay Hale, and Linda Shurter, both of Sheridan; two grandchildren, of Sheridan; one niece, of Scottsdale, AZ; one nephew, of Colorado Springs, CO; and numerous friends. At the family’s request, cremation has taken place, and there will be a private family service at a later date. Champion Ferries Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials in memory of Fred may be made to the Sheridan Animal Shelter, 84 East Ridge Rd., Sheridan, WY 82801 Edna Marie Meline, age 95, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, March 29, 2004, in Sheridan Manor. She was born on the family farm on August 24, 1908, near Verona, N. Dakota to Ingverd and Anna (Lippert) Arenkiel. In 1928, she met Theodore W. Meline of LaMoure, N. Dakota and they were married on August 7, 1929, at Oakes, ND. They moved to Eagle Grove, IA and in 1939 they moved to Webster City, IA where Ted worked for Beam Manufacturing Co. and later for W.C.I. Products. Edna was employed at the Hahne Printing Co. for 24 years, retiring in 1972. Edna and Ted celebrated 67 years of marriage prior to his death in 1997. She was a long time member of the First Congregational Church UCC, Church circles, and the Senior Citizen’s Center of Webster City, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and 11 brothers and sisters. Edna is survived by two daughters Joan (Claude) McClain of Naples, FL and Charlotte Frary, Monroe, MI; son Theodore R. (Carolyn) Meline of Sheridan; five grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be later in Webster City, Iowa. Gerald E. Nordahl, 80 of Ranchesster, WY, died Wednesday, March 17,2004 at his residence. Mr. Nordahl was born December 4, 19232 in Wheat Basin, MT to George S. and Mary V. (Banfill) Nordahls. He grew up int he Wheat Basin area, and joined the Coast Guard in 1943. Mr. Nordahl was dishcharged in 1946 and returned to MT where he farmed until is retirement. Mr. Nordahl was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by one sister, Anna Thiel, or Rifle, CO. Private graveside services by Mr. Nordahl will be held in Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Robert Ray Phillips, 72, of Ranchester died Sunday, March 14, 2004, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital.
An avid outdoorsman throughout his life, Mr. Phillips enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping in the Big Horn Mountains.
He is survived by his wife, Anita of Ranchester; a son, Joel Phillips of Sunnyvale, Calif.; a daughter, Elizabeth Phillips of Oceanside, Calif; and a nephew Robert Mitchell of Concord, Calif.
She was born December 23, 1908, in Dayton, WY, to Edward & Benita (Dow) Townsend She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. Berniece married George Renie in May 1928, in Billings, MT. George died in February 1975. She was preceded in death by one brother Edward and one sister Peggy Miller. Surviving relatives include her sister Dora Davidson of Story, WY; two brothers James Townsend of Sheridan and Roy Townsend of Billings, MT; and numerous nieces and nephews. At the request of Mrs. Renie, there will be no funeral
service. Doris Mae Sells, 90, of Sheridan, WY, died Friday, March 19, 2004 in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Mrs. Sells was born in Sheridan, WY October 27, 1913 to George D. and Ella (Stevens) Nottingham. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan before moving with her family to Thermopolis, WY in 1925. Mrs. Sells then attended Thermopolis schools and Thermopolis High School. The family returned to Sheridan where they lived on a ranch on Big Goose. Mrs. Sells married George Sells October 24, 1934 in Hardin, MT. The Sells returned to Sheridan where Mrs. Sells became a homemaker and mother. Mr. Sells died April 10, 1980. Mrs. Sells enjoyed painting, playing cards, was a very talented cake decorator, and loved spending time with her family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 1 son, 1 daughter, 1 grandson, and 1 great grandson. Mrs. Sells in survived by two sons, Gary Sells, of Bombay Beach, CA, and Kirby Sells, of Casper, WY; one daughter, Karen Shanor, of Ranchester, WY; 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 6 great, great grandchildren. At Mrs. Sells request, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801 Katherine Shephard, 99, of Dayton, passed away on Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Katherine was born on September 27, 1904, in the Cedar Creek Community of Riley County, Kansas, to Charles and Helen (Keefer) Van Pelt. During the "Roaring Twenties" she eloped and married George E. Shepherd in Manitou Springs, Colorado. Katherine loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, cats, airline flights, crocheting, and tatting. She also loved sports, following Kansas college and professional sports teams with great interest. Katherine taught Sunday School for twenty two years, . Mrs. Shepherd was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and five siblings. She is survived by one sister, Dola McIntyre of Randolph, KS, her niece Norma Nichols of Dayton and many other nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place locally and memorial services will be held at a later date in Kansas. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Sheridan Dog & Cat Shelter Katherine N. Zullig, 91, of Pueblo, CO, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 in Pueblo, CO. Mrs. Zullig was born August 15, 1912 in Sheridan, WY to Gilbert K. and Ada E. (Norton) Halley. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan, graduating from Sheridan High School. She then attended and graduated from Missouri State Teacher’s College. She married Raymond Zullig in 1941. Mrs. Zullig worked as a legal secretary until her marriage, when she became a full time homemaker. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. She loved music and played the organ for many years. Mrs. Zullig was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband. She is survived by one daughter, Carol Zuercher, of Rye, CO; one son, Alan Zullig, of Renton, WA; 3 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren. Graveside services for Mrs. Zullig will be 10:00 A.M.
