NOVEMBER 2003 OBITUARIES



Andrew J.“Jack” Banas, 85, of Sheridan, passed away on Thursday, November 6, 2003, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center.

Andrew was born on September 6, 1918, in Dietz, Wyoming, to Andrew and Mary (Nickles) Banas. Jack joined the Army in December of 1941 and served until his honorable discharge in December of 1945. He was assigned to the 6th Airdrome Squadron where he was an airplane and engine mechanic. His stint in the Army took him to Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Jack received the American Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Banas was preceded in death by his father, Andrew Banas; his mother Mary (Kumor); and his two sisters, Delchia Neighbors and Jerry Banas.

Interment will be in Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota with services held at a later date.

The family has requested that memorials be made in Jack’s name to the VA Medical Hospital Volunteer Fund in care of Karen Green, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan , WY 82801.


Floyd C. “Stub” Barbour, 98, of Sheridan, WY, died Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at his residence.

Mr. Barbour was born March 7, 1905 in the Indian Territory near Nowata, OK to Clyde and Mallissa (Patchett) Barbour. He moved to Newcastle, WY with his father, brothers, and sisters in 1915. He became a resident of Sheridan in 1923 as a junior in high school. While in high school, he enjoyed sports playing both football and basketball.

Mr. Barbour was a welder and boilermaker for the C. B. & Q railroad in Sheridan, working in the round -house. He retired from the railroad in the mid 1950’s, worked on the tipple at Monarch as a welder, and then worked for Paul Dowdy’s gas station in Sheridan, retiring in 1971.

Mr. Barbour married Selena Morgan on February 6, 1932 in Billings, MT. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sheridan, and served as a Deacon for many years. He was a member of the Elk’s Lodge in Sheridan. After his retirement, Mr. Barbour was an avid golfer playing 18 holes nearly everyday, summer and winter, golfing into his 80’s. He had a hole-in-one the same year as President Ford. Mr. Barbour also enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, 3 brothers, Russell, Guy, and Vern; 2 sisters, Vera and Grace; 1 son, Phillip; and 1 daughter, Marilyn.

Mr. Barbour is survived by 1 son, Alan, and his wife, Barbara, of Laramie, WY; 8 grandchildren; and 12 great, great grandchildren. He is also survived by a very special friend, Virginia McClintock.

Visitation for Mr. Barbour will be from 9:00A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Monday, December 1, and from 8:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Services for Mr. Barbour will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Melius officiating. Burial will be in the Elk’s Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

John Alan Brayton, 75, of Sheridan, WY, died Thursday, November 27, 2003 at his residence.

Mr. Brayton was born January 15, 1928 in Sheridan, WY to Harold and Marguerite (Barker) Brayton. He attended Holy Name School and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1945.

Immediately upon graduation, he joined the Navy and served on the aircraft carriers U.S.S. John Hancock and the U.S.S. Boxer. He returned to Sheridan in 1948.

He married Marion Woods in 1947. He was employed at the First National Bank, where he retired as Senior Vice President in the early 1980’s. He was also employed in real estate with BHJ and Purcell Land Company. His enjoyment in life included horse training, steer roping, golf, stock trading, his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Brayton was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Robert and Donald; 1 sister, Betty Jean; and 1 son, Thad John Brayton.

He is survived by 1 son, Mike Brayton, of Gillette, WY; 4 daughters, Margi (Brayton) Gray, of Sheridan, Jodi Brayton, of Washington, D. C., Liz Skates, of Rawlins, WY, and Shannon Brayton, of Mesa, AR; and 5 grandchildren.

Services for Mr. Brayton will be 1:00 P. M. Monday, December 1, 2003 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Father Ronald Stolcis officiating. A private family committal service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Jemma Carmella Bumbaca, 89 of Sheridan, passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Jemma was born on March 11, 1914, in Carneyville, Wyoming, to Nick and Fortunata (Marzano) Bumbaca. She started school at Kleenburn until moving to town, and then attended school at John S. Taylor Elementary. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1934. Jemma helped in the family store, Economy Grocery, and clerked at the New York Store. In February 1947, she became the manager of the Alamo Liquor Store, the first retail liquor store in Sheridan County. She was a member of the Church of Christian Science. Jemma enjoyed reading and doing her Bible lessons, and listening to concert music. She also liked going out to lunch with family and friends, and was a long time member of the Professional Business Women’s Association.

Ms. Bumbaca was preceded in death by her parents; her five sisters, Mary T. Luster, Helen Webb, Mary E. Bumbaca, Rose Carbone, and Josephine Montegna; and her two brothers, Dominick Montegna and Bruno Montegna. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held from 9:00 am to 4:00pm at Kane Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 3, 2003. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, December 4, 2003 at Kane Funeral Home with Reader Richard Mumma. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. William Elmer Chace

July 11, 1933 - November 19, 2003

Bill was born to Kenneth L. and Mildred (Thomas) Chace on July 11, 1933, in Spokane, WA. The family moved to Gillette, Wyo., when Bill was an infant. At 2 ½ years, he contracted Scarlet Fever, and consequently spent the rest of his life retarded. Bill’s ancestry was traced back to the Mayflower, and he was the last to carry the name Chace. Bill schooled at the Hill School in Sheridan. He loved watching football, basketball, baseball, and rodeos. He was a member of the Salvation Army and spent over 33 years as a bell ringer for Christmas Drives.

Bill was preceded in death by his father, step-father Parke Fox, an aunt, and an uncle. He is survived by his mother Mildred Fox of Sheridan; his two step-sisters Maxine Sipe and her husband Jack of Sheridan, and Shirley Samson and her husband Chuck of Wheatland, Wyoming; his uncle Marion Thomas and his wife Patricia of Bellevue, Washington; his two aunts, Carol Irish and her husband Ken of Gillette, Wyoming, and Betty Dygert and her husband Wayne of Sheridan; several cousins; and many friends.

A visitation will be held on Monday, November 24, 2003, from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at Kane Funeral Home with Captains Michael and Jennifer Bates officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Mary V. Decker, 93, former Sheridan resident, died Thursday, November 20, 2003 in Shepherd of the Valley Nursing Home in Casper, WY.

Mrs. Decker was born September 24, 1910 in Sheridan, WY to Clarence V. and Lottie L. (Powers) Tiede. She grew up on the family ranch at the head of Otter Creek, MT. She attended the elementary Billup School in Otter, MT, finished elementary school in Huntington Park, CA, and graduated from high school in Fullerton, Ca. She then returned to the Otter Creek ranch after high school in 1930.

Mrs. Decker married August W. Decker on October 23, 1934. She was a homemaker and partner on the ranch for over 65 years from 1934 through the 1990’s. The couple moved to Coeur d’Alene, ID where Mr. Decker was in the timber industry during the drought in 1936 and 1937. Mrs. Decker was the clerk for the Billup school district for over 30 years.

She was a member of the Quietus-Otter Home Demonstration Club, the Eastern Star, and the Farm Bureau. She enjoyed paying the piano, gardening, arts and crafts, knitting crocheting, needle point, and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Decker was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and 1 brother, Tommy Tiede, on the U. S. Aircraft carrier Liscomb Bay on Nov. 24, 1943.

She is survived by 1 son, Gordon L. Decker, of Belgrade, MT; 1 daughter, Dona L. Owen, of Casper, WY; 1 sister, Blanche “Bunny” Haight, of Eugene, OR; 2 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.

Memorial services for Mrs. Decker will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, November 24, 2003 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Don Derryberry officiating. Burial will be in the Elk’s section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Violet Donnafield, 86, of Sheridan, passed away on Saturday, November 1, 2003, at her Sheridan home.

Violet was born on April 29, 1917, on her parents homestead in Arvada, Wyoming, to Peter and Irene (Sunega) Suranyi. She attended school in Arvada. On February 29, 1936 (leap year) she married William “Bill” Donnafield in Sheridan. The couple raised four children together, three daughters and one son. Violet was an active member of her church, Bethesda Worship Center (Church of God of Prophecy) for her whole life. She taught Sunday school, lead the women’s group, and sewed and baked for all of the craft bazaars. She loved to bake and made beautiful breads for Christmas. Violet loved reading and read her Bible many times a day. She had a green thumb with her outdoor gardening and her indoor plants thrived. Violet loved being with her family and friends, she always welcomed people into her home. She enjoyed children and especially loved and delighted in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Donnafield was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother. Survivors include her son, Milton Donnafield of Scottsville, Kentucky; her three daughters, Karen Case and Billie Rae Charles both of Sheridan, and Janice Evans of Mesa, Arizona; her three sisters, Nellie Pate of Sheridan, Mildred Larsen of Port Angeles, WA, and Evelyn Roche of San Antonio, TX; and her nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at Kane Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 5, 2003 from 5pm until 7pm. Dorothy M. Hillberry, 83, of Sheridan, passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Dorothy was born on March 16, 1920, in Sheridan, Wyoming, to Carl and Madge (Bolin) Barton. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1938, and married Glenn Roush in 1951. He later passed away. She married Charles Hillberry in 1978, and he passed away in 2002. She worked for many years as a nurse’s aid and was a loyal employee at Montgomery Ward for many years, and her cats were her life.

Mrs. Hillberry was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Claude Meinter; her second husband Glenn Roush; and her third husband Charles Hillberry. Survivors include her daughter Claudia Paulsen and her husband Weldon of Billings, Montana; her step-daughters, Ellen Hepp and her husband Wade, and Wanda Huston and her husband Virgil, all of Sheridan; her step-son Andrew Hillberry of Dryden, Michigan; her eight grandchildren, Doug Paulsen and Elizabeth Corbridge of Billings, Montana, Tony Hepp of Michigan, Brett Hepp and Dawn Hepp of Sheridan, Zak Iddings of California, Jacie Huston and Mattie Huston of Sheridan.

Cremation has taken place, and at Mrs. Hillberry’s request no services will be held. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Eleanor I. Hosler, 87, Sheridan, passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2003, at Sheridan Manor.

Eleanor was born on July 7, 1917, in Colorado, to Thomas and Mary (Turnbull) Denton.. On August 29, 1934 she married Roy Hosler in Sugar City. She passed her GED in 1973 and the next year attained her LPN license. Eleanor worked at the Crowley Co. Nursing Home in Ordway, Colorado until 1979.

Mrs. Hosler was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband; Survivors include her son, Stephen and his wife Kay of Alameda, CA; her daughter, Patty and her husband James of Sheridan; her sister, Ethel Bamford of Grand Junction, Colorado; her brother, Joseph Denton of Moriarity, NM; and her five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, December 1, 2003 at 10:00 am at Sheridan Square with Reverend Doug Goodwin officating. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements

Lillian F. Hoveland, 86, of Sheridan, WY, died Tuesday, November 11, 2003 in Westview Health Care Center.

Mrs. Hoveland was born May 5, 1917 in Gardner, N.D. to Henry and Martha (Hystad) Fjeldahl. After her mother’s death, she was raised by Will and Gertie Whetston. She grew up and attended schools in Plaza and graduated from Plaza High School in 1933. After high school, Mrs. Hoveland moved to Havre, MT where she worked for the Telephone Company. She then worked for the Buttery store in Havre, and while there, met her future husband, Ole Hoveland, who also was working in the Buttery store. The couple was married in Havre July 9, 1938, and the couple was married for 63 years. Mr. Hoveland died October 11, 2000.

The couple moved to Miles City, MT in 1942 where Mr. Hoveland had the Hoveland Men’s Store and Mrs. Hoveland did alterations for the store. In 1958, the couple moved to Sheridan where Mrs. became the manager of the City Center, now known as the Sheridan Center Best Western. She became active in Western Welcome, and started her career in real estate in 1966, working for the Galey-Thomas Realty. In 1982, Mrs. Hoveland started the Hoveland Real Estate Agency, retiring in 1990.

Mrs. Hoveland was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, serving on the church council, taught Sunday school and was active in the Steven’s Ministry. She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star Chapter in Miles City, MT, a member of the Fine Arts Club in Sheridan, and was one of the founding members of Life Link of Memorial Hospital.

She enjoyed gardening, flowers, painting, and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Hoveland was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 2 sisters, 2 brothers, and 1 son-in-law.

She is survived by 1 son, John W. (Jack) Hoveland, and wife, Carole, of Sheridan; 3 daughters, Joanne Holbrook, of Sheridan, Karen Kawulok, and husband, Frank, of Sheridan, and Marci Kirk, and husband, Pat, of Gillette; 11 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.

Visitation for Mrs. Hoveland will be Friday, November 14, 2003 from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., and from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

Services for Mrs. Hoveland will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 15, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Revs. Ronald Nelson and Wilbur Holz officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Donald "Don" Jacobson, 88, of Sheridan, passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Donald was born on January 1, 1915, in Viborg, South Dakota, to Elvin and Imogene (Harris) Jacobson. He married Amy Collingwood on April 14, 1941 in Worland, Wyoming and the couple raised one son together. Donald enjoyed woodworking, skiing, hunting, fishing, the mountains, and his family.

Mr. Jacobson was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, and five sisters. Survivors include his wife Amy of Sheridan; his son Jerry of Spokane, WA; his brother Bud of Concord, CA; and one grandchild and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at Kane Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at 2:00pm with inurment to follow in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

James R. Learn, 89, of Story, WY, died Tuesday, November 8, 2003 in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Mr. Learn was born March 10, 1914 in Spokane, WA to Miles C. and Blanch P. (Wilson) Learn. He grew up and attended schools in Spokane, graduating from Rogers High School.

He served in the Navy Reserve from 1940 to 1945. During W.W. II he served as a radio operator on PB2Y-3 flying boats and participated in most of the major campaigns in the South Pacific.

Mr. Learn married Helen E. Montaque on February 27, 1942 in San Diego, CA. After the war they resided in Spokane until 1958 when they moved to Casper, WY to work with the F.A.A. as an electronic technician.

In 1961, the Learn's moved to where he continued to work for the F.A.A. in Sheridan. Upon Mr. Learn's retirement in 1979 he had a small repair business as he could fix almost anything. He also delivered mail or meals to shut-ins.

Mr. Learn was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, and 3 sisters.

He is survived by his Wife, Helen, of Story; 1 son, Richard W. Learn, of Vegas, NV; 1 daughter, Linda R. Billings, of Story; 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Memorial services for Mr. Learn will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, November 21, 2003 in the Story Women's Club with Rev. Doug Goodwin and Rev. Tim Trumbull officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Hal Ralph MacDonald, 51, of Sheridan, WY, died Saturday, November 22, 2003 in his residence.

Mr. MacDonald was born February 16, 1952 in Rapid City, S. D. to Ralph C. and Helen (Watchorn) MacDonald. He grew up and attended schools in Casper, WY graduating from Kelley Walsh High School in 1971. He then attended Casper College for 2 years, and the University of Wyoming majoring in Parks and Recreation. Mr. MacDonald received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1974.

Mr. MacDonald went to work for Mt. Bell. He received a M.B.A. degree from the University of Phoenix. Mr. MacDonald worked for U. S. West Communications as head of research and development until 1994 when he was then self-employed.

He enjoyed woodworking, running, swimming, (was a certified lifeguard), snow –skiing, and was a member of the University of Wyoming Ski Patrol.

Mr. MacDonald was preceded in death by his grandparents.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph C. MacDonald, of Edmunds, WA; 1 son, Jason MacDonald, of Aurora, CO; 1 daughter, Megan MacDonald, of Tucson, AR; and 1 brother, Glen MacDonald, of Mukilteo, WA.

A Celebration of Life for Mr. MacDonald will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, November, 28, 2003 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Helen McCalla, 94, of Sheridan, passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Helen was born on February 22, 1909, in Sheridan, Wyoming, to T.G. and Luetta (Smith) Scott. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1927 and from St. Patrick’s Hospital in Missoula as a registered nurse in 1931. On August 18, 1933 she married Maurice McCalla in Deadwood, South Dakota. The couple raised a son and daughter together. Helen worked as a registered nurse at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County for twenty five years. She was the first coordinator for hospice when it started in Sheridan in 1984, she did this for seven and a half years. Helen belonged to the Social Order of Beaucant,a member of the First Congregational Church, was the past Matron of Naomi Chapter #2, an Order of Eastern Star, and Grand Representative to the State of Washington. She enjoyed needle-work, reading, sewing, cooking, fishing, and most of all her family.

Mrs. McCalla was preceded in death by her husband in 1960; her parents; one brother; one sister; and one great-grandson. Survivors include her son, Terry McCalla of Upton, Wyoming; her daughter, Carol Ann Copp of Ranchester, Wyoming; her seven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held at Kane Funeral Home on Friday, November 28, 2003, from 5pm until 7pm. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 29, 2003, at Kane Funeral Home with the Reverend Ray Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Jack D. Oneyear, 64, of Sheridan,WY, died Monday, November 17, 2003 at his residence.

Mr. Oneyear was born in Sheridan, WY to Lyle Grant and Juanita M. (Pate) Oneyear. He grew up in Sheridan and attended Taylor School. During W.W. II, he lived in Edgemont, S.D.. During his teen years, he lived in Alhambra, CA, and Portland OR.

Mr. Oneyear married Faye Paulsen in Sheridan, WY December 3, 1961 and the couple was married for 41 years.

Mr. Oneyear was a sheet metal fabricator for Prill Brothers. He also worked for Mid-Continent Oil and for Harold Wimmer's Texaco in Sheridan. Mr. Oneyear was a police officer for a short period of time. He later worked for many years and Shipton's and Prill Brothers. Due to his illness, he retired in 1985.

Mr. Oneyear was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Sheridan. He loved working on old cars, fishing, golfing and bowling. He enjoyed painting and was a very accomplished artist. Mr. Oneyear was an avid sports fan loving Sheridan sports and U.W. football. But most of all Mr. Oneyear loved being with his family.

Mr. Oneyear was preceded in death by his father, and several aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his mother, Juanita Cline, of Sheridan his wife, Faye, of Sheridan; 2 daughters, Lisa Oneyear of Sheridan, WY, and Debra Golden of Gillette, WY; 1 brother Ron Oneyear, of Ranchester, WY; 1 sister, Nancy Longress, of Sheridan, WY; and 2 grandchildren.

Manuel S. Quintana, 94, of Sheridan, WY, died Wednesday, November 19,2003 in the Sheridan V.A. Medical Center.

Mr. Quintana was born October 12, 1909 in Walsenburg, CO to Estanislao and Secundina (Vigil) Quintana. He grew up in Walsenburg, joining the Navy during WW II. After the service, Mr. Quintana worked in various locations in CO and WY before going to work for M.D.U. as a power plant fireman.

Mr. Quintana married Beatrice Gutierrez May 24, 1941 in Douglas, WY. She died in 1973. He then married Felipe Cortez who also preceded him in death.

He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Sheridan, the Knights of Columbus, Eagles, and the American Legion. Mr. Quintana enjoyed hunting, fishing, and played in the Dart Ball League into his middle 80's, Most of all, Mr. Quintana enjoyed spending time with his family.

Mr. Quintana was preceded in death by his parents, his 2 wives, and 1 daughter.

He is survived by 2 sons; Manuel Quintana, Jr. of Portland, OR and Jim Quintana, of Sheridan, WY; 2 daughters, Margaret Stone, of Denver, CO, and Mary Jo Zimmer, of Front Royal, VA; and 5 grandchildren.

Vigil services for Mr. Quintana will be 7:00 P.M. Sunday, November 23, 2003 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Liturgy services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday November 24, 2003 at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Thomas Ogg as celebrant. Burial will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Donna Lee Rawlings; Our dear Mom, Grandma Rawlings, Sister and Special Friend, “Donna Lee” passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2003 in Memorial Hospital.

She was born on May 26th, 1933 in Sheridan, Wyoming, the third of five daughters, to Gothard O. and Evelyn (Ely) Bylund. She attended Taylor and Central, graduating from Sheridan High School in 1951. Donna married John C. Rawlings on December 6, 1952. She was employed at First Interstate Bank for thirty years and The Perkins Foundation from 1992 until her death. Donna was a majorette for the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps in the 1950's and a member of the Elks #520 Club and AARP. She enjoyed boating, water-skiing, snow machining in the Big Horns, growing African Violets and gardening, canning, cooking, shopping, travel, and most of all spending time with all of her family members.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Johnny in 1976, and her sister, Jeanne Grey in 2002. Donna is survived by her three children; daughters, Tempe Lee Rawlings of Sheridan, and Rhonda Rae (Rawlings) Miller and her husband Colonel Christopher Miller, USAF of San Antonio, TX, and her son John Robert Rawlings of Livingston, MT; three sisters, Jenny Rollins and her husband Carl of Phoenix, AZ, Evelyn Greisser and her husband Richard of Tucson, AZ, and Mary Taliaferro of Scottsdale, AZ; four grandchildren, Chelsey and Tyler Kukuchka and Ryann and Sky Miller; and eleven nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held on Friday, November 7, 2003 at Kane Funeral Home from 12pm until 4pm. Visitation will be held at Kane Funeral Home on Sunday, November 9, 2003 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 10, 2003 at 2:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Ron Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Elks section of Sheridan Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the Elks club following the service. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

The family has requested that memorials be made in Donna’s name to The American Cancer Society or the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter.

Phil Bernard Reimers, 82, of Sheridan, passed away on Wednesday, November19, 2003, at Sheridan Manor surrounded by his loving family.

Phil was born on March 2, 1921, in Belle Prairie, Minnesota, to Philamon and Goldie (Kardell) Reimers. He grew up on the family farm in Laurel, Nebraska where he attended and graduated from Laurel School. He worked on the family farm until starting his own trucking business, Bernard Trucking in Laurel. He joined the Navy in 1944 and served in the Asiatic-Pacific area as well as the Philippine Liberation. Phil received the Victory Medal for World War II before his honorable discharge in 1946. He married Frances Hanson in 1946 in Wayne, Nebraska, they had six children. The two later divorced and he married Daisy D. Caskey on November 7, 1975 in Sheridan. Phil joined the CCC and worked on various projects including the Big Horn Mountains putting in power lines and working on Sibley Lake. He also worked for Miller Land & Livestock for awhile until he began employment as a master mechanic for Riley Motor Company for thirty years until his retirement in 1977 due to his health. Phil enjoyed hunting, fishing, tinkering around in the garage, and spending time with his family. He was a life member of the American Legion.

Mr. Reimers was preceded in death by his wife Daisy; his parents; his three brothers Glen, Guy, and Dean; and his grandson Steven P. Reimers. Survivors include his four sons, Rod of Sheridan, Terry of Buffalo, Russ of Billings, MT and Mike of Spring Hills, FL; his two daughters, Irene Sessions and Yvonne Reimers both of Sheridan; his stepchildren,
Bill D. Caskey and Dan D. Daniels; his two brothers, George of Crane, MT and Gene of Sheridan; his five sisters, Elsie Harmier of Sioux City, IA, Edith Berg of Gillette, WY, and Verline Canfield of Sheridan and Mary Ann Kahler of Great Falls, MT, and Jeanette Hoffman of Cody, WY; and his 23 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, November 23, 2003 from 8:00am until 4:00pm, at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 24, 2003 at First Christian Church at 2:00 pm with Reverend Doug Goodwin officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Freda M. Monroe Surface, 97, formerly of Sheridan, died Sunday, November 23, 2003 in Canon City, CO.

Mrs. Surface was born June 10, 1906 in Sheridan, WY to Harry and Agnes (Moorehead) Pratt. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan graduating from Sheridan High School in 1924. Following graduation, Mrs. Surface worked in the Sheridan Journal office for several years.

She married Thomas Monroe August 2, 1930. Mr. Monroe died July 15, 1959. Mrs. Surface married Ira W. (Bill) Surface November 23, 1960 in Sheridan. Mr. Surface died August 9, 1984.

Mrs. Surface started the first cafeteria at what was then known as the Northern Wyoming Community College in Stolt Hall at the Wyoming Girl’s School. In 1954, the college moved to the old hospital building on Saberton Ave. where Mrs. Surface managed the cafeteria there. In 1959, the college moved to it’s present location, and became known as Sheridan College, where Mrs. Surface managed the cafeteria until her retirement in 1964.

From 1964 through 1984, the Surface’s had good, active retirement years where they spent an extensive amount of time tying fishing flies, traveling around the country delivering the many orders that they had received for their flies, and enjoying the beautiful fishing spots that they encountered while on their travels. Mrs. Surface was also very active in the Sheridan Senior Citizen’s Center.

Mrs. Surface was a member of First Christian Church of Sheridan and the Christian Women’s Fellowship of First Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her 2 husbands, 3 sisters, and an infant daughter.

Mrs. Surface is survived by her son, Marvin Monroe and his wife, Marilynn, of Story, WY; 1 sister, Harriet Griffith, of Sequim, WA; 2 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; 2 great, great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services for Mrs. Surface will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, November 28, 2003 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Stephanie Lynn Villhauer, 20, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, November 17, 2003 in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Ms. Villhauer was born June 7, 1983 in Sheridan, WY to Del and Kathy (Leupold) Vilhauer. In 1985, the family moved to Arizona, then to Colorado in 1989. In 2000 they returned to Sheridan and Stephanie graduated from Sheridan High School in 2001. She then attended Sheridan College for 1 year.

Ms. Vilhauer was a Veterinary Assistant for Sheridan Animal Medical Center in Sheridan. She loved animals, fishing, horseback riding, and photography.

She is survived by her parents, Del and Kathy Vilhauer of Sheridan: 2 brothers, Kyle and Justing Vilhauer of Sheridan; Maternal grandmother, Jan Leupold of Tulsa, OK; her maternal grandfather, George Leupold, Sr. of St. George, Utah; her paternal grandparents, Darwin and Helen Vilhauer, of Strang, NE; her grandmothers, Nettie S. Jackman, of Tulsa, OK, and Elva Knudson, or Irene, S.D.; 2 uncles, Doug Vilhauer, of Spokane, WA. and George Leupold, Jr. and wife Jamie of Sheridan, WY; and 1 cousin.

Private family services for Ms. Vilhauer will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.


Eleanor Odessa (Dessa) Wakefield passed away on November 24, 2003, at the age of 87 after being hospitalized with heart failure on November 13, 2003.

Dessa Wakefield was born on December 2, 1915, in Glendo, Wyoming. She was one of five children of John Ledra Mills and Susan Mildred Hardesty. At age 11, she and brothers, John and Elmer, went to live with her beloved Aunt Dess, Delia Odessa Herter, on a farm north of Johnstown, Colorado. She milked cows and did chores that included washing clothes every Monday, being excused from school for the day.

After being graduated at the top of her class at Johnstown High School in 1934, she escaped the harsh farm life to live with her uncle Reverend Charles Hardesty at the Methodist parsonage in Sheridan, while attending post-graduate school at Sheridan High School. She and Frank Wakefield were married on September 1, 1935, in a small farmhouse owned by Dave Herter, outside of Johnstown, Colorado. They honeymooned at Glen Haven Cabins, Big Thompson Canyon, Loveland, Colorado.

The honeymoon was preceded by an old-fashioned shivaree by a fun-loving brother and other relatives, which included locking the bride to a two wheeled cart and tying up the groom.

Following the honeymoon, Frank worked fro Safeway stores in Loveland, Colorado. Dessa continued to help on the family farm, cooking for sometimes as many as 30 wheat combining, hay, and sugar beet harvesting crews.

The couple returned to Sheridan in May of 1936, and until WWII Frank worked for Ed Sharp at Stop and Shop Grocery on West Loucks Street, and Boyd Rader, Safeway Stores, on Main Street.

Dessa began raising a family, Gene, November 1936, and Bob, December 1939. They moved to Johnstown, Colorado during WWII, where twins Larry and Mary were born in Greeley in 1944, while Frank was serving in the Pacific in the Army.

They returned to Sheridan in 1949, where Frank commenced a career with the Canteen Service, USVA, at the Veterans Administration Hospital.

The couple was very involved over the years in community activities. Frank was ap ast commander of the American Legion, active member of the Moose Lodge, DAV supporter, transportation coordinator/drive for VA Hospital, and scout leader.

He won a “Silver Beaver Award” from the Boy Scouts of America for his 35 years of service to the organization in the Sheridan area and Dessa worked alongside him at many scout camps in the Big Horns and above Cody. When Frank managed the Bison and Sunset theaters in Buffalo in the late 1960's Dessa managed the concessions. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She is the former president of the Taylor School PTA, Sheridan High School secretary/coordinator, Rochford Studio Associate, and school activities supporter.

She was preceded in death by son Gene, Ft. Walton Beach , FL and by her four brothers, Steve, Roy, John, and Elmer. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Frank of Sheridan Manor, sons Bob (Cathy) Sheridan, and Larry (Gege), Kalispell, MT; and daughter Mary, Hudson, Wyoming. Survivors include ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, December 1, 2003 at the First Presbyterian Church at 2:00 pm with Reverend Doug Melius officiating. Inurnment will follow at Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements



Elizabeth “Beth” Eleanor Wright, 87, of Sheridan, WY, died Sunday, November 30, 2003 at her residence.

Mrs. Wright was born January 28, 1916 in Brainerd, MN to Ray and Florence (Palmer) Woodley. She grew up and attended schools in Mobridge, SD and graduated from Lemmon High School in Lemmon, SD in 1934. Beth worked in her father’s grocery store, then worked in a ladies ready-to-wear store where her highest salary was $11.00 a week during the depression.

Mrs. Wright married Glen W. Wright August 25, 1940 in Mobridge, SD. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

When Beth and Glen were dating, they often drove 100 miles to dance to Lawrence Welk, Jan Garber, or Wayne King returning home in time to go to work. Beth moved many times with each advancement of her husband Glen’s career. They lived in Mobridge, SD; Granger, WA; Quinn, Wall, Highmore, and Selby, SD; Moorcroft, Gillette, and Lusk, WY before settling in Sheridan in 1970. Mrs. Wright worked in the J. C. Penney’s store in Sheridan for a number of years. Every place Beth lived, she was very active in her church and community.

Mrs. Wright was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sheridan, and as a good shepherd, visited members in Sheridan Manor, especially her dear friend Mildred Morgan. She was a past President of P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter T, and a member of Women of the Moose # 1437 in El Segundo, CA.

Beth was a 58-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, having been initiated by Ionic Chapter #103 in Mobridge, SD on Sept. 21, 1945. She was later affiliated with Niobrara Chapter #26 in Lusk, WY. She became affiliated with Naomi Chapter #2 in Sheridan on Dec. 9, 1970. She served as Worthy Matron of Naomi 1975-76 and as Grand Representative of Alabama in WY 1985-86, having been appointed by Worthy Grand Matron Dorothy Dietz. She was appointed Grand Ruth of WY Grand Chapter by Worthy Grand Matron Jo Myers and Worthy Grand Patron Norris Odde for the Star year 1994-1995. She served faithfully in Naomi Chapter for the past 33 years, cheerfully accepting any position offered, and assisting in a myriad of tasks, including attending and assisting in Friendship Chapter #51.

Mrs. Wright was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Glen, and one sister Eveline Hill.

She is survived by two sons: Dr. David Wright (Judy) of Loveland, CO and Glen R. Wright (Diana) Sheridan; three daughters: Margaret Serreyn (Don) of Blaine, MN; Diane Sanderson (Stan) of Carpentersville, IL; and Mary Leblond of San Antonio, TX; one sister Shirley Cameron and daughter Cindi Fallah (Afshin) of Torrance, CA; one sister-in-law Faye Kennedy of Belle Fourche, SD; 12 grandchildren: Ann Serreyn of Coon Rapids, MN; Paul Serreyn (Tracy) Lakeville, MN; Mark Sanderson (Janine) of Des Plaines, IL; Karen Sanderson of Hoffman Estates, IL; Dr. Jason Wright (Karen) of Loveland, CO; Scott Wright of Ft. Collins, CO; Brian Wright (Melinda) of Thornton, CO; Ty Wright (Gwen) of Gillette, WY; Joshua Wright (Kristan) of Camp Pendleton, CA; Jacob Wright and Cassie Lizotte of Sheridan; Beth Leblond (Mehmet Cicek) of Albuquerque, NM; and Brad Leblond of San Antonio, TX; eight great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Beth, with her bright eyes, lovely smile and wonderful spirit, was gracious and welcoming to everyone. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Visitation for Mrs. Wright will be 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home and at First Presbyterian Church from 12:00 noon to the time of service. Services for Mrs. Wright will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, December 4, 2003 at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Doug Melius officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.
