Susanna “Susie” Bailey, 84, of Sheridan, passed away on Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at Westview Health Care Center.

Susie was born on February 8, 1919, in Kooi, Wyoming, to John and Mary Ann (Sikora) Kawulok. She married Franklin C. Bailey on November 25, 1954 in Spokane, WA. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. Susie worked part time as a cook for the rectory at Holy Name and Monarch as well as the Holy Name convent.

Mrs. Bailey was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Frank; her sister Helen Cieslar; her sister Mary Helms; and her son Franklin John Bailey. Survivors include her brother John Kawulok of Sheridan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vigil services will be held on Friday, October 24, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2003 at 10:00 am at Holy Name Catholic Church with The Reverend Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Philip R. Barker age 82 of Sheridan, WY

Died Friday, October 3, 2003, in the Sheridan V.A. Medical Center, following a heart attack.

Born July 25, 1921, in Parkman, WY

Parents – George & Ernestine (Jaccar) Barker

During WWII, Philip served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army Air Corps and was trained as a pilot. Philip married Miss Bonnie Muller, also from Sheridan, February 11, 1946. After the war, he worked briefly with his brothers of Barker Brothers Construction building reservoirs and other projects throughout Northern Wyoming and Southern Montana. In 1946, Philip took auto body training and worked first for Cook Ford Sales and then for Riley Motor Co. before founding Barker’s Auto Body in the early 1970’s. He successfully operated the business until 1992, when he retired because of health problems. Philip loved hunting and fishing and all outdoor pursuits. He traveled to Alaska and the Northwest Territories for fishing trips over the years. He greatly enjoyed several trips to Hawaii with his wife Bonnie. He was a skilled and avid gardener and became fascinated with and expert in tree culture in his later years. He reveled in regaling his grandchildren and great grandchildren with stories of the old west, some of which were true. He was a long-term member of the Sheridan Elks Lodge and the American Legion.

Preceded in death by his parents; two brother Gabriel & Joseph; and a great grandson Johnathan.

Robert Dean "Moose Bennett, 69 o, of Sheridan, passed away on Friday, October 3, 2003, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center.

Robert was bron on Jaunuary 5, 1934, in Casper , Wyoming, to Patrick and Margarett (Berry) Bennett. He worked as a mechanic then as a ranch hand on a ranch outside of Casper. Robert enjoyed prospecting.

Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his parents; tow brothers; and one sister. Survivors include his brother Chuck Bennett and his wife Pat of Houston, Texas; his sister Carolyn O'Herra and he Husband Jack of Casper, WY; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Creamation has taken place and no services has been scheduled. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.


Peter Donston age 66 of Dayton, WY

Died Saturday, October 4, 2003, in Deaconess Hospital, Billings, MT

The family came to Sheridan when he was a young boy. He graduated from Sheridan High School in 1955. Peter worked for Eaton’s Ranch right after high school and then for Mid-Continent Oil Company. He married Anne Davies on May 25, 1968, in Dayton. They lived in Sheridan until moving to Dayton in 1974. Peter worked for Metz Beverage until going to work for Mullinax Concrete in 1977. He worked there until the present time. He was a member of Big Horn Mtn. Eagles Lodge. Peter enjoyed crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, gardening especially tomatoes and visiting with friends.

Preceded in death by his wife Anne in 1987; daughter Nancy; sister Ann Rawlings; and brothers Alan and Alden.

Helen Joan Gazur, 87, of Ranchester, WY, died Friday, October 31, 2003 at her residence.

Ms. Gazur was born December 4, 1915 in Kooi, WY to Thomas A. and Anna (Kawulok) Gazur. After completing school in Kooi, Helen spent the majority of her adult life working at a number of laundries and dry cleaners in the Sheridan area. After retirement, Helen was active in numerous volunteer activities with the Tongue River Branch Library in Ranchester. She was an active life-long member of both St. Thomas Catholic Church in Monarch and St. Edmonds Catholic Church in Ranchester.

Ms. Gazur was preceded in dead by her parents, one brother, and one sister.

She is survived by 2 brothers, George Gazur of Bellingham, Washington, and Michael Gazur of Ranchester, WY; 1 cousin, 1 niece, and seven nephews.

Vigil services for Ms. Gazur will be 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 4th, 2003 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Liturgy services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 5th, 2003 at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Ron Stolcis as celebrant. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Paul William Gorzalka, 85, of Sheridan, passed away on Wednesday, October 22, 2003, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center.

Paul was born on March 13, 1918, in Sheridan, to John and Ann (Sikora) Gorzalka. He enlisted in the Army in June of 1942 with the 601st Field Artillery Battalion. Paul was a member of the First Mule Pack Brigade in Fort Sill, Oklahoma then went on to Camp Carson in Colorado then joined the Amphibious Force in Fort Orde, California. He served in the Aleutian Islands, Luzon and Europe (Germany, France, Italy, and Austria). He was in combat five times and served his country for three and a half years. Upon returning home he worked for Nelson Construction, the Holly Sugar Factory silos, and the Best Out West Flour Mill silos. Paul started his own little herd of cattle in 1940 and raised them all of his life. He loved his cows and enjoyed the spring branding and the fall reward of roundup along with the sale of the calves. Paul also loved farming, he used horses to stack his hay for twenty years before purchasing his first bailer. Another thing dear to Paul was his fondness for beer; dark beer, light beer, foreign, domestic, or homemade he loved it all. He also enjoyed going to Polish dances, fishing, hunting, playing pool, canning sauerkraut and pickles, and raising a big garden. Paul loved life and lived it to the fullest.

Mr. Gorzalka was preceded in death by his parents; his five brothers, John, Joe, Tony, Frank, and Mike; and his sister Mary Manderfield. Survivors include his brother Al Gorzalka of Sheridan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vigil services will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2003 at 7:00 p.m., at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 27, 2003 at Holy Name Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. with The Reverend Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

H. Irene Hammontree, 91, of Sheridan, passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at her home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 20, 2003 at 10:00AM, at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Forman officiating.

Mrs. Hammontree was born on April 1, 1912, in Radville, Saskatchewan, Canada to John Henry and Alidy Pansy (Bergersen) Frickey. Irene moved to the United States when she was about four and her family homesteaded about fourty miles NE of Moorcroft. They then moved to Sheidan when she was about twelve years old. Attending schools in Sheidan, she met and married Carl E. Hammontree on April 16, 1933.

Her interests included sewing, knitting and her flowers. She was a member of the Half Century Homemakers club and Akcita Win, and a past member of BPO Does. Irene was also a member of the First Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; a son-in-law; and her husband in 1990. Survivors include her two daughters Shirley French of Bixby, OK and Carlene Hammontree of Sheridan; her brother Gerald B. Frickey of Loveland, CO; and her several grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family has requested that memorials be made in Irene's name to the Sheridan Senior Center Building Project or the donor's choice in care of Kay Rouch, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheidan, WY 82801.


Marvel Loop, wife of the late Gail Loop, died Saturday, October 4, 2003, at Sheridan Manor.

The family appreciates the level of care that was provided while she was at the manor.
At her request cremation has taken place and there will be no memorial services.


Victor Dennis McCann II, 57, of Sheridan, passed away on Thursday, October 30, 2003, at Sheridan Manor.

Victor was born on July 16, 1946, in Findlay, Ohio, to Victor and Marian (Sibold) McCann. Prior to moving to Sheridan five years ago he lived in Buffalo and Casper. Victor enjoyed fishing and the great outdoors.

Mr. McCann was preceded in death by his parents; and his two sisters. Survivors include his four sons; one daughter; and eight grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.


Margaret “Peggy” Redburn, 77, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, October 13, 2003 of pancreatic cancer in San Francisco, CA. Peggy was born to Walter and Eleanor Reusser in Laramie, WY on March 16, 1926. She graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in elementary education. She married Dick Redburn on August 29, 1946 in Laramie.

She taught in the Sheridan Public Schools for 22 years, teaching second grade for most of her career. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church, the AB Chapter of P.E.O. and enjoyed many travels with Dick and her sister and brother-in-law. With all of her activities and interests, her greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be remembered by her family for the enthusiasm with which she shared in their lives. Her many friends will remember her for her generosity and friendship.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick in 1993. She is survived by her son Chris, his wife, Cindy and granddaughter, Kate, of San Francisco; son Mike, his wife Debra, and grandson, Nicholas and granddaughter, Lauren of Bozeman, MT; her sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and Glen Pray, of Littleton, CO; nephew John Pray (Ann), also of Littleton, CO; niece, Betsy Nachand (Chris), of Castle Rock, CO, and sister-in-law, Nancy Valencia (Jim), of Casper, WY.

Memorial services for Mrs. Redburn will be 3:00P.M. Saturday, October 18, 2003 at the 1st Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Doug Melius officiating. Private burial will be in Laramie, WY. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Helen M. Redder, 76, of Sheridan, WY, died Thursday, October 9, 2003 in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Mrs. Redder was born December 1, 1926 in Fairmont, Minnesota, to Paul and Katherine (Broich) Sommerfield. She grew up and attended schools in Worthington, MN, graduating from High School in Canby, MN in 1944. She enrolled in the Cadet Nursing program at St. Mary’s College in Minneapolis, MN.

She Married Vernon M. Redder on June 20, 1945 in Wilmont, MN. The couple lived in Sturgis, S.D. for 5 years, moving to Sheridan in 1956.

Mrs. Redder was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and St. Francis Circle. She enjoyed sewing, playing Bridge and Cribbage, and spending much time with her family. She did social work for D-Pass, and did home- health care for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 2 brothers, 1 granddaughter, and 1 grandson.

Mrs. Redder is survived by 5 sons, Chuck, of Lengby, MN, Don, of Gillette, WY, Steve, of Sheridan, Bill, of Powell, WY, and Scott, of Ellsworth Air Force Base, Rapid City, S.D; 1 daughter, Carol Depew, of Sheridan; 2 sisters, Beverly Stassen, of Walnut Grove, MN, and Irene Rudolph, of North Branch, MN; 12 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

Vigil Service for Mrs. Redder will be 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Father Ron Stolcis officiating. Funeral Liturgy will be 10:00 A.M. Eugene Lewis Rutledge, 75, of Sheridan, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2003, at Sheridan Manor.

Mr. Eugene Rutledge was born June 29, 1928 in Dietz, Wyoming to Lloyd and Ann (Matejovitz) Rutledge. He married Mary Branson in 1991.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his sister, Wilma Jean; and his parents. Survivors include his cousin and friend, Bob Marosok; and his longtime friend, Bob Graves. Both were at his side at his time of death.

At Mr. Rutledges request no services are scheduled. Burial has taken place at Evansville Veterans Cemetery on Tuesday, October 14, 2003.

Edith Mae Salisbury, 85, of Sheridan, passed away on Friday, October 24, 2003, at Sheridan Manor.

Edith was born on April 26, 1918, in Biddle, Montana, to James A and Carrie S. (Hawkins) Geer. She grew up on her father’s cattle ranch in southeastern Montana. In her early teens she and the family moved to Broadus, later she moved to Miles City, Montana. Edith received her schooling in Montana. She moved to Sheridan in the fall of 1969 and worked for Stevens Fryberger, a cashier at Brown Drug and for several years was head of the gift department at McDonald’s Department Store. Edith married Earl Keith Salisbury on
June 17, 1988 in Miles City, Montana and made their home in Sheridan. Edith and Keith loved traveling through Canada and the western United States. Edith also loved dancing, her home life and her flowers.

Edith is survived, from a previous marriage to Joe Irion, by a stepdaughter, Carol Barbero, and step-grandchildren John, Joe, and Patti Barbero. She is also survived, from a previous marriage to Chet Severance, by a stepdaughter, Julie Mitchell. She is also survived by a stepson, Richard Salisbury of Tucson, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Keith; her parents; and a brother, Alden Attla Geer preceded her in death.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2003 at 1:00pm, at Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.


Rudy Schilling age 87 of Ranchester, WY

Died Friday, October 10, 2003, in his home

Born July 31, 1916, in Ranchester, WY

Parents – Otto & Anna (Sperl) Schilling


He grew up on the family ranch and graduated from Ranchester High School. He worked for the railroad for a few years. Rudy married Patricia Reinhart in 1940. They were later divorced. He worked for N.A. Nelson Construction as a mason for many years as well as Randall Construction, KWN Construction and Husman Brothers until he retired. He married Dorothy Nichols in 1966 in Buffalo, WY. She died in 1979. After retiring, he ranched on the Schilling family ranch. He took care of his long time companion Pauline Dryden for many years until she died. He loved raising pheasants, peacocks and other birds. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry, coin collecting and gun collecting.

Kelly Kay Schreibeis, 38, ended her battle with breast cancer Friday, October 10, 2003, at her home. Although ravaged by the fight, a heavenly victory is finally hers.

Kelly Kay was born on February 9th, 1965, to Kay (Wolfe) Pitman and David H. Schreibeis. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1983 and was currently attending Sheridan College to become a certified massage therapist. The vast and varied experiences in between are too numerous to list, but made her the beautiful human being we loved.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Bud Wolfe, Peggy Hollander, and Ed and May Schreibeis. She is survived by her parents and their spouses, Lyle Pittman and Judy Schreibeis, respectively; Sisters Renee Moshier (James) and Lynnet Bede (Jim, and nephews, Finn and Kavan); and Judy’s children Lori Hink, Tim and Mike Lawson, and countless relatives and friends.

Our beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was blessed with infinite talents giving her the ability to master art of any form, wether it was that of horse and stable operations, an acetylene torch, paintbrush, or camera. Creating beautiful pieces of wonder from whatever her imagination could see.

Kelly was full of grace, forgiveness, love, hope, and patience. She was a thoughtful, generous spirit who’s absence leaves an unspeakable void in the hearts of all who loved her.

A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, October 18th, 2003, at
10:00 a.m. with Reverend David Duprey officiating. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Kelly’s life will take place following the service at the Sheridan Center.

Donald Edward Sutton, 69, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, October 27, 2003 at his residence.

Mr. Sutton was born February 9, 1934 in Kemmerer, WY to William Edward and Mary Emily (Clark) Sutton. He lived in Kemmerer as a young boy and the family moved to Cheyenne, WY when he was 8. Mr. Sutton attended schools in Cheyenne. He joined the Navy during the Korean War and graduated from high school while in the Navy.

Mr. Sutton returned to Cheyenne, and began his career as a meat cutter. He lived in various towns around WY, and moved back to Sheridan 10 years ago, working for Yalowizer Processing as a meat cutter. Mr. Sutton retired in 1999.

Mr. Sutton married Betsy Merrill in Cheyenne in 1956. She died in 1987.

He was a member of the Methodist Church, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, dancing, playing pool, and spending time with his friends.

Mr. Sutton was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and 1 brother.

He is survived by 2 sons, Scott E. Sutton, of Sheridan, and Rick Merrill, of Cheyenne; 2 daughters, Lisa Merrill, of Laramie, and Karen Doss, of Cheyenne; 1 brother, Bill Sutton, of Houston, TX; and 2 grandchildren.

At his request, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Mr. Sutton’s life will be held at 6:00 P.M., Friday, October 31, 2003 at Sutton’s Tavern, 1402 N. Main St., Sheridan. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Glenneda Vines, 93, of Sheridan, WY, died Wednesday, October 15, 2003 in Sheridan Manor.

Mrs. Vines was born September 8, 1910 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Howard Pershing and Ethel (Durkee) MacPherson. She grew up in the Midwest and graduated from Campbell County High School in 1928. She moved to Sundance and went to work as a line-o-type operator for her father who owned and operated the Sundance Times.

On September 2, 1933, she married Fred Vines in Sundance. The couple moved to Gillette and lived there for the next 37 years before moving to Sheridan in 1975. Mr. Vines died in 1976.

Mrs. Vines was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church in Sheridan, Chapter AB, P.E.O., and the Eastern Star in Gillette. She enjoyed reading, traveling, working crossword puzzles, and spending time with her family. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters.

Mrs. Vines is survived by 3 sons; Ronald Vines and wife, Sue, of Riverton, WY, W. H. “Bill” Vines and wife, Kris, of Wheatland, WY, and Kenneth Vines and wife, Gwen, of Cheyenne, WY; 1 daughter, Marilyn Michelena, and husband, Sandy, of Sheridan; 1 brother, Ged MacPherson, of Portland, OR; 2 sisters, Marian Coles, of Manteca, CA, and Honey Hooper, of Sterling, CO; 10 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rodger D. Wagner, 67, of Sheridan, passed away on Wednesday, October 22, 2003, at his Sheridan residence.

A lifelong Sheridan County resident Rodger was a third generation rancher on S.R. Creek, Northeast of Sheridan. The son of Mike G.Wagner and Mary A. Kuhl, grandson of Nicholas P. Kuhl and Flora Gove. Rodger was a direct descendant of Carlos Gove, the famous gunsmith and founding father of Denver, CO.

Besides ranching, Rodger worked in Sheridan for the railroad, Jersey Creamery, Holly Sugar, Hammers Chevrolet, and Decker Coal in Montana.

Rodger will be remembered for his elaborate sense of humor, integrity, hard work, creative ingenuity, and left handed plumbing. A gifted artist and metal worker, Rodger enjoyed welding, photography, story telling, hot cars, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, traveling and a well thought out practical joke.

Rodger is survived by his present wife Claudette D. Dube, his former wife Barbara A. Oliver, 3 children, 3 stepchildren, 4 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.
