Eleven year-old Gunnar Poley, a Buffalo Swim Club member, recently traveled to Federal Way, Washington to compete in the Northwest Age Group Swimming Championships.
This is the highest level of competition that an age group swimmer can achieve and swimmers must meet qualifying times in order to compete in the meet, according to mom April Poley.
She said Over 1,300 swimmers competed at the King County Weyerhaeuser Aquatic Center, which is the host for the 2012 Olympic Diving Trials in June.
Gunnar qualifed for five freestyle events in the 50, 100, 200, 500 yard, and mile.
He tells us about the competition.
He swam a new personal best of 27.22 seconds in the 50 free. He also swam personal best times in the 100 free, (59.41 seconds), taking 7th place; and the 500 free (5:49.06) taking 8th place. He took home 8th place medals in the mile (21:00.93) and the 200 free (2:10.62).
Gunnar competed at Sectionals in Seattle, and will now concentrate on trying to qualify for Zones, which will be held in August.
