NHSFR- The 2009 National High School Finals Rodeo continues in Farmington, New Mexico. In the 1st Go in pole bending yesterday, Megan Belus from Buffalo was 27th in the performance, and is 126th overall. She is currently 12th in breakaway roping. Nikki Baumann from Sheridan is 46th in goat tying, and will have her first run in breakaway roping today. Luke Camino from Clearmont still stands in 2nd place in steer wrestling.
Still to make his first run is Jake Gill in tie-down roping, and Taylor Kelly will be up in the saddle bronc riding. The final performance in the 1st Go is today; the 2nd Go begins tonight and will continue through Saturday morning.
The Championship Short Go is scheduled to end the rodeo Saturday night, with over 1,500 contestants the National Finals has 13 performances including the championship round Saturday. Maggie Boyle from Sheridan competed in the National Finals last year; this year Maggie lives in Aiken, South Carolina and is competing again. She currently sits in 8th place in the barrel race.
LOCAL GOLF - Sheridan High School sophomore Kamrin Allen placed 6th at the Wyoming State Am Golf Tournament this past weekend. Even though he's only 15 years old, he's played a lot of tournament golf. As for playing against adults, Kamrin says he feels comfortable playing with older players. The golf season in Wyoming is short, but Kamrin says he gets plenty of practice timein the winter.
This weekend, Allen and Bronc teammate Cameron Lindell will travel to compete in the Junior America's Cup in California. It's a team event, which has four players representing each state competing against other teams from the western United States. This fall, Allen and Lindell will be members of the defending State Champion Bronc golf team.
AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL - The Sheridan Jets are the host for the State Junior American Legion Baseball Tournament. The tournament opens tomorrow with three games at Thorne-Rider Stadium. Top Seed Cheyenne gets a 1st-round bye. The first game will start at noon, with Gillette playing Cody. Laramie plays Wheatland at 3 pm and the Jets will play Casper at 7:30.
Wyoming has gone to a District Tournament format, and for the rest of the American Legion teams, the Troopers open in Casper tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 against Cody. The top four from each district advance to the State Tournament in Rock Springs next week.
SHERIDAN REC DISTRICT - The Sheridan Recreation District post-season tournament play in slow pitch softball is this week. Tonight the Co-Rec Championship games will be held, and they will also offer a Co-Rec extended league season. Registration starts Monday; they'll play games Tuesday and Thursday nights, with each team playing 10 games.
LOCAL TENNIS - The annual JD Mullinax Tennis Tournament is coming up August 8th and 9th, with men's, women's and mixed doubles. They are taking registrations at the Rec office.
LITTLE GUY FOOTBALL - We are not too far off from football season, and the Rec District will open registration for Little Guy Football August 3rd through 7th. Flag and Tackle league play begins August 25th.
HIGH GOAL POLO - The Flying “H” Polo Ranch has more high goal polo tomorrow afternoon starting at 1 pm; they will also have action Friday at 4 o'clock with the “Archie MaCarty” Kids Cup, sponsored by the Powder Horn. Saturday they will host the “Bob Tate” Memorial Cup. Admission is free, but bring blankets or lawn chairs.
VOLLEYBALL - Sheridan College youth volleyball camps will run Monday through Wednesday next week. The morning session is for girls K-5th grade; the afternoon session is for 6th-12th grades. To register, contact Sheridan College Women's volleyball coach Jonea Rima at 674-6446 ex:4002.
