CHEYENNE, (AP) - Wyoming Treasurer Joe Meyer says he has
lung cancer and expects to undergo surgery in Cheyenne next week. Meyer said today that he discovered the cancer about two weeks ago when he sought medical treatment for chest pain. He says doctors tell him his tumor is malignant but it has not spread.
The 68-year-old Republican is serving his third year as state treasurer. He has also served as Wyoming attorney general and
secretary of state. Meyer says he expects to be back at work within four to six weeks. He says he intends to finish this term, but hasn't made a decision whether he will see re-election next year.
Meyer says he has been a smoker for 45 years and believes that
contributed to the cancer. He says he has now quit smoking.
