In 1979 the United States Congress enacted the Congressional Award Act that was co-sponsored by Senator Malcolm Wallop.
The program provides challenge and recognition for the initiative, achievements and excellence of young people in voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness and expedition and exploration.
The Congressional Award program is a non-competitive program that is available in all fifty states to those between 13½ and 23 years of age. Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Sales Coordinator Jan Mates is the mother of Wyoming Congressional Award Executive Director Janice Peterson. Mates says that she wants to help educate local youth about the program.
Participants of the program will actually be in Sheridan County this summer.
Mates said that anyone interested in taking part in the Wyoming Congressional Award program can contact her for more information at 307-751-3777 or 307-672-2485.
