CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - A bill that would ban Wyoming drivers from sending text messages has cleared two important legislative hurdles. Democratic Senator Floyd Esquibel of Cheyenne is the prime sponsor of the bill, Senate File 20. He says that banning texting while driving would improve highway safety in the state.
The Senate voted 26-4 to introduce the bill on Monday, and the Senate Transportation Highways and Military Affairs Committee then voted unanimously to recommend approval. Col. Sam Powell is administrator of the Wyoming Highway Patrol. He spoke in favor of the bill at the committee hearing.
Powell says the texting ban would primarily affect younger drivers and should improve highway safety.
