Now that the weather is getting warmer and the streets are staying clear, more and more people are getting out to enjoy bike rides. Thanks to the Wyoming Trial Lawyers Association, any child in the state who needs a bicycle helmet can get one for free.
Wearing a bike helmet should be a safety habit, just like buckling up when in the car. Wyoming kids are hearing that safety message in schools and at fairs this spring, as part of the "Head Smart" WYO Bike Safety Campaign. Marcia Shanor (SHANE-er) teaches safety events around the state, where free bike helmets are also fitted for kids.
Shanor says it's important that helmets be the right size for maximum protection, which is why they offer fittings along with the helmets.
Shanor has been handing out thousands of helmets for about ten years. The Bicycle Helmet Institute estimates that the regular use of a helmet could reduce the serious injury rate in bicycle accidents by up to 90%.
