Richard Wilkerson, 30, who is being held in connection with the death of 45-year old Bryan Newman after a bar altercation last month, had his preliminary hearing in Johnson County Circuit Court this afternoon.
County Prosecuting Attorney Ken DeCock presented evidence against Wilkerson and called one witness, Buffalo Police Sgt. Garth Nicholas, who described the events that led to Newman's death.
Sgt. Nicholas said after police interviewed witnesses of the incident, various stories surfaced as to why the altercation happened, but witnesses said they saw Wilkerson hit Newman on the side of the head, and he fell unconscious to the floor. Some also stated that Wilkerson either kicked or stomped Newman in the head.
Newman was later pronounced deceased at the Johnson County Healthcare Center.
Judge J. John Sampson ruled there was enough evidence to bind the case over to District Court.
No court date has been set at this time.
Wilkerson is charged with murder in the second degree and faces 20 years to life in prison, up to a $10,000 fine, or both if convicted.
