A newly created position at Sheridan College this year will focus specifically on veterans and their college experience. Brett Burtis was recently named the Director of Veteran's Services at Sheridan College, and he told us what his first priority in the new position will be.
Also, Burtis will work to make sure vets get all their benefits and scholarships. Students in Wyoming have a two-year window after high school to use the Hathaway scholarship, but if they enter the military that window freezes until they get out. Burtis talked about something else the state offers students.
He would like to work to reduce any stress that the transition of going from military life to college life may produce.
Burtis said that a big part of his job is referral and advocacy, things as simple as making phone calls and helping those who may need it by directing them to the right resources.
For student-veterans with questions, Burtis' office is located in the Whitney Building Room 125, and his number at the college is 674-6446 ext. 2720. Or, email him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
