The Bighorn National Forest Powder River District Ranger Mark Booth would like to remind visitors to the Cloud Peak Wilderness west of Buffalo that registration is required for anyone entering the wilderness area.
There are three reasons for requiring the registrations. First, use numbers can be estimated for various access points to the Cloud Peak Wilderness. Second, use numbers help with funding. Third, visitors can carry their copy of the registration which has the specific regulations for the area. Specific questions about camping distance from water, group sizes and more are available on the back of their registrations.
Registrations can be done through registration boxes outside of each Bighorn National Forest office. Or at each major trailhead accessing the Cloud Peak Wilderness. Registrations can also be done online at http://www.fs.usda.gov/main/bigh... then click on “Special Places.” The link to register is on the right hand side of the page with instructions.
Some regulations for the Wilderness area include: no campfires and no possessing or transporting wood above 9,200 feet; camping and tethering of horses must be at least 100 feet from water; and no groups of people larger than 10.
The requirements are in place to protect the resource for future generations.
Remember to practice “Leave No Trace” outdoor ethics in the Bighorn National Forest. More information on the Leave No Trace program is available online at www.lnt.org or by calling 1-800-332-4100.
