An accident three miles south of Gillette on WYO 50 Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of 38-year-old John Herrera of Gillette.
In a media release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Herrera was traveling southbound on WYO 50 at a high rate of speed and was attempting to pass two southbound vehicles in a no passing zone. Herrera had completed passing one of the two vehicles when he collided head on with a semi that was heading northbound. The driver of the tractor trailer combination attempted to steer to the right to avoid the crash, but was unsuccessful in doing so.
Herrera was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger with Herrera was ejected from the vehicle and remains hospitalized at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. The driver of the semi was uninjured and refused medical attention. Troopers are investigating alcohol as a contributing factor in the crash.
