Sheridan Travel and Tourism saw travelers spending less when they visited Sheridan County last year than the previous year, but STT says more visitors to the area resulted in a rise in 4 percent lodging tax collections.
STT Executive Director Penny Becker says that city-wide lodging tax collections were up 6 percent above the previous year.
The number of visitors to the center was 100,887, second highest in Wyoming. If STT conclusions are correct and there were more travelers staying in Sheridan, they spent less - $86.4 million compared to $87.9, according to STT Travel Impact Reports. Tourism job earnings for the year were $25.8 million, down from $27.8. These decreases can be attributed to the state of the economy, Becker says.
Looking to a new year, Becker says that its all about getting their name in as many places as possible to try and keep numbers steady. STT combines an advertising campaign that reaches 12 million with a public relations campaign that reaches 7.7 million. They also integrate their marketing campaigns by using their print ads in nationwide publications to drive people to their website.
Becker says its important to stay current – that includes use of Facebook and Twitter.

Becker says that Sheridan was recognized five times in 2011, one of those popped up recently in American Cowboy Magazine. The article, titled: 3 days in Sheridan, Wyoming, stretches from Sheridan's downtown attractions and eateries to the Big Horn Mountains and even to the Occidental in Buffalo.
