At their meeting Wednesday night, the Sheridan County School District No. 3 Board of Trustees discussed Personnel Policy concerning personal leave for teachers and staff.
The current policy is for teachers, if they need time off, to take a half-day of personal leave, even if they only need one to two hours to get their personal tasks completed, requiring a substitute teacher to cover the teacher's responsibilities.
The discussion, between the board, administrators and teachers focused on ways the district could allow employees to take less time than half-days and still have coverage for the district's schools.
One teacher present said they have always tried to cover for each other when allowed to leave for an hour or two. The focus, she said, should be the best interest of the children.
By allowing teachers to take only the time needed off instead of half-days, they would spend more time in the classrooms.
Another teacher explained her concerns with current policy further.
The board will consider the proposed change and discuss the issue further at a future meeting.
