At the March Sheridan School District 2 Board of Trustees meeting last night, trustees accepted with reluctance the resignation of longtime Trustee Mary Ann Burton. Burton is stepping down because of health issues for both her and her husband. Board Chair Scott Hininger comments on Burton's many years of service to School District 2.
Superintendent Dougherty will advertise for the open Trustee position. Once applications are in, interviews will take place, and the replacement will then serve out the rest of Burton's term, which will expire this fall.
Also at the meeting, new Sheridan High School Assistant Principal Jack Brimhall gave a presentation on the recently established Professional Learning Communities, or PLC. Principal Dirlene Wheeler explains.
Does Wheeler sense from the students a feeling that "wow, these teachers really care about me"?
Wheeler says that since implementing the PLC last fall, conflict and behavioral referrals have greatly diminished.
In other action during the meeting, Trustees approved the purchase of a new 36-passenger IC model school bus in the amount of $82,164. Transportation Director Steve Schlicting said his department opted for this bus because it will be purchased locally through High Plains and serviced locally at Steve's Truck. He also indicated that the IC Maxxforce engine is preferred over the Cummins engines used in other buses.
Trustees approved an Out-of-Country travel request for SHS Spanish teacher Mario Mantano to take fourteen students to Costa Rica over Spring Break, pending insurance approval.
And they formally accepted a generous donation of over 200 pounds of school supplies from Great Lakes Airlines to be distributed throughout the District.
