The City of Buffalo is one step closer to having their Safe Routes to School project completed, according to City Planner Zach Montgomery. Aaron Palmer brings us the report.
Buffalo's program will put in sidewalks and paths and improve visibility on Brock Street from Main Street to the schools on Burritt Street, to improve safety for children going to and from school.
This program was supposed to be completed a number of years ago, but as the City went to acquire funding for the project, Montgomery says they realized they did not have their paperwork in order. The City now has their paperwork ready to go after funding.
Montgomery said the Safe Routes to School Plan has been endorsed by the Federal Government, State Government, and last month was adopted by the Buffalo City Council.
Now that the plan has been adopted by all necessary entities, the City can now proceed with the Brock Street Project and any others in the future as funding becomes available.
Montgomery said there are a number of these projects in the plan. The next step, he said, is to request proposals from engineeing firms to get an estimate on the cost of the project to acquire funding, then to put out requests for bid and award the project. Construction, he hopes, will begin in the spring and be completed by the summer of 2011.
