Johnson County Planner Rob Yingling, at the last commissioner's meeting, told the commissioners there needs to be a County Board of Equalization established before zoning is adopted in the county.
Yingling said citizens should have a way to appeal zoning decisions affecting their property, and suggested the commissioners act as the BOE for such matters.
Commission chair Smokey Wildeman suggested the commissioners go ahead and act as the BOE for zoning issues, saying “I would think it would start with us.”
The commissioners voted to put themselves in as the zoning BOE.
County planning and zoning regulations are expected to be ready to go to public hearings soon and then be ready for changes soon after before they are adopted later this fall or early in 2012.
