The southeastern Montana complex of fires has created a debacle for ranchers in the area.
While many pockets of cattle were burned or lost in the flames, those that somehow survived are now left without adequate food and water. Rebecca McEuen, Disaster Emergency Services Coordinator, said the livestock will face starvation without help.
Ranchers in the area surveyed the post-fire wreckage to find their fence posts had disappeared and the wire had melted to the ground. Water well pumps are disfigured from the heat exposure and don't work. With no way to feed their livestock, the ranchers affected by the massive Montana fires will have no choice but to somehow relocate their herds.
Anyone with hay, feed, a water trough, or pasture to donate should contact the Powder River Extension Office at (406) 436-2424. Ranchers looking for feed can go to the office's website to see where available donations are located by clicking here.
