WYOMING NEWS SERVICE, Cheyenne, WY - Every food item on the grocery store shelf has a nutrition label, but understanding what the percentages mean in trying to make healthier food choices isn't so clear. That's why the American Heart Association has a new online nutrition center for Wyomingites to help decode those labels.
A-H-A registered dietitian Joan Enderle says along with the decoder is information to help folks set up a diet plan, which helps put those nutrition numbers and percentages in context.
Enderle points out that common terms on nutrition labels aren't fully understood - such as those listing fat content. The new website has a nutrition dictionary featuring easy-to-read explanations.
The label decoder and diet advice are free at heart.org. Besides tips on healthy diets and weight loss, there are specific sections focusing on how good nutrition can play a role in the prevention of heart disease and stroke.
