In recent months, prescription drug abuse and related crimes have been on the rise in Wyoming. On the July 29th edition of Public Pulse, Executive Director of the Wyoming State Board of Medicine, Kevin Bohnenblust (BAH-nen-bluss-t) spoke to us about his group's work on prescription policy and the challenges therein.
Bohnenblust says the board is working with physicians, physician assistants and other caregivers who are licensed to prescribe drugs to recognize drug-seeking behavior.
On the flip side, Bohnenblust says the pendulum also swings the other way, in that patients with legitimate pain sometimes have difficulty getting medication because the physicians are wary of prescribing it.
He says that a number of licensing boards, law enforcement, the US Attorney's office, the state board of pharmacy and other state agencies are combining forces to get more training and educational tools made available.
