A pretrial conference was scheduled Thursday morning in 4th Judicial District Court in Sheridan County for 55-year-old Sheridan resident Curtis Scheckla. Scheckla is charged with 2nd Degree Sexual Abuse of a Minor for fondling and inappropriately touching a 5-year-old girl last summer. The hearing ended up being a plea change, as Scheckla plead guilty to the charge as part of a plea agreement with the State. Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Dianna Bennett stated to the Court that the plea agreement meant that the State would not amend the charge to 1st Degree Sexual Abuse of a Minor.
In August of 2010, Scheckla, or “Skeeter” as he is known, was babysitting two young children at the Trails End Motel in Sheridan; however, the incident actually took place at Scheckla's home, which is in Sheridan as well. After being arrested, Scheckla stated to law enforcement in an interview, that the 5-year-old girl “got the ball rolling”, which led to his inappropriate touching.
During the hearing, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Dianna Bennett stated that DNA tests conducted at the State Crime Lab in Cheyenne showed that the defendant's saliva was found on parts of the girl's body as well an article of clothing. District Court Judge John Fenn accepted the plea and ordered a presentence investigation to be conducted.
A sentencing date was not set at the time of the hearing. Judge Fenn issued that the bond be revoked and Scheckla be remanded back to the custody of the Sheridan County Detention Center. The charge of 2nd Degree Sexual Abuse of a Minor is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
