A tired but hopeful Johnson County Fire Chief Wes Johnson took a few minutes to update Sheridan Media on the status of the Cato Fire northeast of Buffalo.
Johnson said although he wasn't positive of exact numbers, as of Thursday morning believed the fire to have burned 25,000-plus acres and to be roughly 50% contained.
Although the fire did grow somewhat overnight Wednesday, he said crews have a “pretty good handle” on the situation so far, and will continue to have a handle on the fire as long as conditions stay close to yesterday's conditions.
He said with a little luck and some more hard work, the fire could be contained and hopefully done soon.
While most of the fire is in Johnson County, there is a portion that's burning in Sheridan County that forced the evacuation of several homes along Thompson Creek Road. The north end of the fire is approximately four miles from the town of Clearmont. We'll have more information and updates as they become available.
