A 13-year-old eighth grader from Clear Creek Middle School in Johnson County will represent Wyoming at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., later this year.
Taylor Ballek last weekend in Laramie beat out 44 spellers from 16 counties by making no mistakes in the 100-word written preliminary round and making no mistakes in 21 rounds of oral competition. Her winning word? Metamorphosis.
To reach the state bee, spellers had to first compete in county spelling bees. Ballek will compete against the top spellers from across the country in the Scripps National Spelling Bee June 2 - 4.
The AARP National Spelling Bee sponsored The Wyoming State Spelling Bee, and the University of Wyoming hosted the competitors. Sheridan County's Mckenzie Murray tied for 12th place with a speller from Albany County.
