At their last meeting earlier this month, the Johnson County Commissioners released the final retainage funds on the new Buffalo/Johnson County Justice Center.
The $10.3 million project was completed and occupied last fall, and the contractor requested the retainage funds be released to them.
Retainage is normally negotiated up front in a project of this scale and is withheld until the project is completed and is normally a percentage of the overall cost of the project.
The retainage account, originally 10% of the total cost, or just over $1 million, had $445,000 remaining.
Cost overuns, change orders and issues with drainage and the sewer systems on the site carved more than half off the original retainage amount.
Groathouse Construction is currently overseeing construction of the courtroom facility that will be attached to the current justice center.
