The national debate continues on the Federal Health Care Initiative that is currently being considered by Congress. Wyoming leaders are focusing their attention on paying for increasing numbers of state residents qualifying for Medicaid. Governor Dave Freudenthal says the latest figures predict the program will go over budget this year.
The most shocking fact is that cost are rising much faster than the increase in qualifying participants.
The state unemployment rate is still well below the national average but that won’t help those unemployed Medicaid recipients. The State Legislature will meet in the biennial budget session this winter. They may not have any remedies for deficit if State revenues don’t start to increase in the next few months.
