Everyone has heard there's no such thing as a free lunch, but there is a free Community Holiday Dinner in Sheridan, and this year's 22nd annual get-together is Sunday.
Bob Defries explains how the tradition started 22 years ago.
The dinner was originally designated for low-income people who needed a holiday celebration, and that first year, about 160 people showed up. After attendance started to drop off, the event was opened to the whole community, and participation exploded. Last year, more than 1200 people stopped by.
Dinner is from 4 to 7 Sunday at the Holiday Inn. It's 100 percent free, but tickets are required. Transportation can also be arranged if needed. To RSVP, call 674-6446 or 674-4302.
Donations to support the dinner can be made at the Chamber of Commerce.
