Wyoming families throw away approximately 20 pounds of food each month. Jan Foley, with the Institute on the Environment, says Americans,can do a lot to stop wasting food, like keep a close eye on expiration dates and plan menus carefully. He says making more frequent, but smaller, trips to the store helps avoid waste.
Foley says the most common food wasted includes meat and seafood. The average family throws away between $300 and $500 each year. However, wasting food isn't just a financial issue for an individual family. It translates into wasted food production resources.
Foley says 40 percent of food never gets to the table. Some of it is consumer fault, but food is also lost during shipping, production, marketing, and in restaurants.
