A group working to make sure all Sheridan County children are well-fed is growing in Sheridan, working with county schools now for about a year and a half. Amy Albrecht is with The Food Group in Sheridan.
An anonymous program, the nonprofit group operating within the Center for Vital Community offers their service at no cost to any child. The Food Group began by serving 100 and 120 children per week and now that number is up to 238 children in District 1 and 2. According to Albrecht, about 34 percent of Sheridan County School District 2 children are on the free and reduced lunch program. She added the group sees the biggest need in Tongue River schools.
The Food Group works with Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies along with community retailers. Businesses can adopt schools and churches help as well. They help with pickup and packing food for delivery. Albrecht says they need the most help in the form of financial donations.
It costs $180 to sponsor a child for one year. The program is also offered to stretch food dollars over the weekend. Ask your principal to find out more.
