Sheridan County and City officials are sending out a formal reminder to its residents to participate in the area's voluntary emergency notification system.
Formally titled Code Red, the program has been operating in the county for the last two years. Cyndi Godwin, dispatcher at the Sheridan Police Department, helped establish the program, and she said anyone who signs up can get a call or text if there's an emergency that may affect them.
The Code Red emergency notification system can be specialized to notify residents in a certain area of a flood, fire, broken water main, or other hazards that might otherwise be dangerous to people who live nearby. People who prefer to lay low have expressed anxiety about handing over their phone numbers and addresses to law enforcement. However, Godwin explains that's not really how it works.
