President Barack Obama announced last week during his State of the Union Address he would like to see the national minimum wage raised to $9 per hour. Chamber of Commerce Director, Dixie Johnson, said the proposal has her pulled in two different directions.
However, Johnson said “Mom and Pop” shops could possibly see more business if minimum wage was increased, which would inevitably result in more cash flow within the community.
Johnson said the question of mandating higher wages is further complicated by other governmental regulations, including the Affordable Care Act. One thing is for sure—raising the minimum wage means different things to different people.
Right now, increase in the federal pay mandate is just talk.
