The Johnson County Commission approved the proposal to move forward in the process of creating a joint city/county engineer position after hearing the proposal from City Planner Zach Montgomery and County Planner Rob Yingling.
Both planners have compiled information from a number of engineers from around the state that answered specific questions about pay, benefits, job descriptions and other related inquiries on their position.

Montgomery said the meeting will also allow both entities to work out other issues, like which will hire the engineer and who will reimburse the other for his services; who will furnish work space and a vehicle and what types of equipment will need to be purchased; and how those and similar expenses will be shared.
The negotiations are expected to begin in the next few weeks.
The Buffalo City Council, at their meeting later Tuesday evening, also voted to allow them to move forward, but only after lengthy discussions about expenses, benefits, and weighing the options. The council finally voted unanimously in favor of the proposal.
