After some discussion and after a powerpoint presentation from developer and owner of Buffalo Ridge Subdivision Jason Beckner, the Buffalo City Council voted to approve Resolution No. 1332, a resubdivision request from Beckner to allow him to resubdivide some of the lots into smaller sections to allow for more affordable housing units to be built on them.
According to Buffalo City Planner Zach Montgomery, the controversy was in the requests for the variances themselves.
Montgomery said trying to write an Ordinance that would eliminate the need for any variance, the Ordinance would be several thousand pages long and would still not completely remove the need for variances.
He explains why he felt the variance should have been allowed.
He said there are a million different scenarios where a variance would be necessary and that is exactly why they are needed, to comply as closely as possible to the written ordinance but to make an adjustment as needed in a unique circumstance.
