The Buffalo City Council, at their meeting Tuesday, approved a request for funding to remove asbestos from the city-owned YMCA building.
According to Mike Quast, Executive Director of the Johnson County Family YMCA, the asbestos is in insulation on and near heat exchangers, boiler pipes, tanks and other areas adjacent to the pool area, and must be removed.
He explained the new bid to the council.
The original bid of $7,800 did not include the removal of material from the boiler area, according to Quast, and when the mistake was discovered, the new and larger bid amount was made for this fiscal year.
The bid also includes re-insulating the areas where the old asbestos insulation will be removed.
The council approved paying Liberty Environmental Services to perform the work in the amount of $12,980, out of the city's Building Maintenance Fund Account.
