The Buffalo High School Forensics team traveled to Spearfish South Dakota December 14 and 15 for their second tournament of the season.
Most of the team was able to attend, and they had an outstanding weekend placing second in the Small Schools Division.
Two new members of the team, Sailour Simmons and Rebecca Flanders, were competing in their first tournament and competed together in Duet, earning a fourth place finish overall.
Taylar Kauffman was also attending her first tournament, and she advanced to the final round of her event, Poetry. Kauffman earned a fourth place finish as well.
First year competitor Kameesha Morris was competing in two events and placed in both. She was performing a new Oratory and earned fourth place in that event, and earned a second place finish in Drama.
In Extemporaneous Speech, Mark Carranza and Cody Giles both advanced to the final round where Carranza placed fourth overall and Giles brought home a third place finish.
The Bison team had numerous entries in Congressional Debate. All of them were able to place in the two different sections of Congress. In the House, Rex Yeigh placed sixth, Heidi Hauck fifth, Brianna Taylor third and Kaleb Moseman second.
In the Senate, Heidi Hauck received fourth place, and Rex Yeigh brought home the second place trophy.
In Lincoln-Douglas Debate both Brianna Taylor and Cody Giles advanced to the semi-finals. Giles did not advance further and earned third place. Taylor won her round to advance to finals, but was unable to defeat her opponent from Sturgis, and ended up in second place.
Coach Walter Farwell said, “This was a new tournament for us since Spearfish has not hosted for over a decade. The tournament ran really well and we had some outstanding performances from the team. This is the second week in a row that we have earned the second place sweepstakes trophy, and we are excited to try and improve on that after the break.”
