An area of Lake DeSmet near the south dam that has always had restricted vehicle and camping access but has seen increases in both recently will now be restricted with posts and chains across the roadway and will have signage installed informing the public of the restrictions now that the Johnson County Commissioners decided to uphold the restrictions at their meeting last week.
Rick Durfee, who oversees the Mikesell/Potts Recreation Area for Johnson County, reported that the county has received complaints of noise, partying, garbage being dumped and damage to the land in the area from people using the restricted area.
He explains further.
Johnson County will sign the area as restricted for vehicles and for camping, but walk-in fishing access will still be allowed.
Adjacent property owned by the Lake DeSmet Counties Coalition will more than likely be signed similarly, but the Coalition will be informed of the issue and a decision will need to come from them concerning their property and possible signage at their section of the lake.
