If you visited the National Weather Service's website Wednesday to check the weather for Burgess Junction you may have seen reports wind speeds of 100 miles per hour for a sustained period of almost eight hours.
According to meteorologists in Billings those reports were inaccurate. Reports said wind speeds reached 113 miles per hour at 7 am with a peak speed of 129 miles per hour at 10 am Wednesday.
Kurt Hooley, Meteorologist with NWS in Billings says that the equipment at the site has been producing false online reports since about November.
Hooley said that there were accurate reports of some high winds Wednesday in Sheridan County including a gust of 71 mph at 9:46 am northwest of Dayton. Winds along the foothills of Sheridan County were in the the 70 mile per hour range but the strongest gusts didn't reach Sheridan. He added that this was nothing out of the ordinary though, as occasionally they get reports of down-slope winds that will do that.
