Fire Prevention Week just ended and National Volunteer Week is not until April but volunteers such as the members of the Big Horn Volunteer Fire Department shown here should be recognized for what they do throughout the year. Last month these 11 volunteer firemen, one-half of the departments volunteers, responded not as volunteers to put out a fire but as volunteers in the 9/11 Program at the Big Horn School Campus. From the left are volunteer firemen DJ Pucell, Bill Biastoch, Jeff Connell, Alan Telk, Brett Burtis, Randy Kany, Jon Warden, Marc Veillet, Mark Galloway, Kevin Dow and Chief Doug Enloe. These 11 showed up in three vehicles with a Wyoming and National Flag that they first raised, and then lowered to half-staff, before the entire Big Horn Campus audience. You'll also see them standing by at the local football games and yes they even helped out during recent homecoming pep rally activities when a "BH" was burned near the football field. Did I mention they can flip great pancakes like they do each year at their Annual Pancake Breakfast? Volunteer firefighters may have got their start in ancient Rome in 6 AD but their volunteerism continues today in the Big Horn area as part of the 71% of the firefighters nationally that are volunteers.
