Sheridan Junior High School 7th Grader (right) Kayli Turlington was awarded a scholarship to space camp Thursday at SJHS. 2011 Wyoming Teacher of the Year Laurie Graves (right) presented her with the award along with a $1,000 travel voucher.

Graves, Big Horn Elementary School teacher, attended space camp in Huntsville, Alabama last summer where she was given one scholarship to award a student. She worked with Senator Bruce Burns to make sure there was travel money for the student who she picked. Burns asked her to accept applicants from all of Sheridan County. Graves received nine and removed all names from essays when selecting the winner. She says she was impressed by all of the applicants, Kayli just showed a passion for astronomy she was looking for.

Kayli said that she has wanted to be an astronaut since she was five, has several telescopes, reads about astronomy and even tracks stars. She hopes to design new products for NASA someday. She can choose several times between now and July to take her trip to space camp. The camp is held in Huntsville, Alabama at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center One Tranquility Base.
