Clinton William
Eubank died Sunday, June 11, 2000.
Clint was
born in Sheridan, Wyoming, June 18, 1901, in a frame house on the corner
of Burkitt and Coffeen. He attended Linden School and graduated from
Sheridan High School. He remembered the town of Sheridan from the
days of unpaved Main Street, the buildings from their first construction
and the inhabitants by name and personality.
Clint was the only son
of Minnie Thurmond and Dick Eubank. The grandson of John Dudley Thurmond,
a Sheridan benefactor. He delighted in the telling of how Bill Gollings
made him a bow and arrow and as a child being hoisted up to ride with William
Cody.
He had an open and inquisitive
nature and being somewhat of a rebel he learned to play drums from a black
horse soldier stationed at Fort McKenzie. In those years, professional
musicians were not held in high regard, yet Clint played a trap set at
the opening of Lodore Supper Club in Story. He played wherever he
could find a gig in those depression years. Most of the ranches,
towns and cities throughout Wyoming and parts of all the bordering states
were familiar to Clint and he could remember each in detail. Before
talkies he played in the “pit” at the Lotus and Orpheum theaters in Sheridan.
He played on a cruise ship to China, high school proms and he knew such
greats as Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa and in Denver where a trombonist named
Glenn Miller was a college stand-in.
When he married Bertha
Brown in 1930, his adaptability and unusual degree of loyalty to family
and friends found him playing in local gigs, teaching drums, and teaching
himself how to master the intricacies of a metal lathe and gunsmithing.
This combination of skills led to a career as an experimental machinist
at the China Lake Naval Weapons Center and an expert in small arms and
their repair.
Clint retired to Onyx,
California in 1965. In 1991, he moved to Story. He suffered
a congestive heart attack in 1994 and later moved into Sheridan in 1997.
Until his heart attack he played local gigs when he was over ninety years
old.
Clint maintained his memberships
in local and national clubs and organizations including NRA, Masonic Lodge
#43, Kalif Temple, York Rite, Eagles, Eastern Star and St. Peter's Episcopal
Church. He was a 50 year member in most of these organizations.
Clint is survived by Bertha,
his wife of 70 years, a daughter Barbara Cloyd Hurst and son-in-law Thomas
Kooi Hurst. Grandchildren Roger Preston Cloyd and Cheryl Cloyd Guth
both of San Diego, California; great grandchildren Thomas P. Guth, Chase,
Cole, and Carson P. Cloyd also of San Diego and daughter-in-law Helen Eubank
of Onyx, California. He was preceded in death by his son Richard.
Memorial service will
be 11:00am on Wednesday (June 14th) from St. Peter's Episcopal Church with
the Rev. Ray Clark officiating, assisted by Kevin Jones.
Arrangements are with
Ferries Funeral Home.
Memorials may benefit
the Shrine Crippled Children Travel Fund, in care of Box K, Sheridan, WY
82801.
