The family moved to Kansas and he graduated high school in Hoisington, Kansas. Ed graduated from the College of Mines in Kansas and worked for Kennecott Copper Corp. for many years as a mine executive. He retired in 1973. He was instrumental in laying communication cable across Oregon. He married Emma Lu Hatfield on August 28, 1973, in Gillette, WY, and they came to Sheridan in 1974. They traveled extensively in Texas, Florida and all through the south. He was a member of Elks Lodge #520.

He was raised in Prague, Oklahoma, where he graduated from high school in 1950. He was an honor student and an excellent basketball player. The love of hunting and fishing learned as a young boy continued through adulthood and he especially loved doing both in the Big Horn Mountains. He attended Chillichothe Business College in Missouri and in 1951 began his career with Mountain Bell as a repeater man in the toll test department at Casper, WY. He married Ethel Gale on August 27, 1953, in Rawlins, WY. In 1955, he was transferred to Sheridan. He was drafted into the Army in 1955 serving until 1957 when he returned to his job in Sheridan. He worked as a central office technician until 1976. He was promoted and assigned to manage the central office in the Newcastle, WY, area until 1983 when he returned to Sheridan and was assistant manager of network switching. He retired on April 1, 1987, with 36 years of service. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.
Preceded in death by three infant children, his parents,
and his sister Jeanette Bartemy.

Betty grew up and graduated from high school in Rapid City, South Dakota. Graduated from South Dakota State with a degree in Home Economics. She married Donald Becker on October 28, 1950, in Rapid City. They lived in several places before moving to Worland, WY, in 1960. She worked as an assistant dietician in South Dakota and for the schools in Worland. They moved to Sheridan in February of this year. She was very active in the United Methodist Church and P.E.O. Chapter AA in Worland. Betty was always caring for her friends and family.

Dick was born on November 15, 1942, in Gregory, South Dakota, to Alfred and Frieda Hauf Betcher. He was raised in South Dakota on various farms and ranches. After attending high school in Custer, South Dakota, he moved to Wyoming with his family to follow construction jobs. On December 1, 1962, he was united in marriage to Barbara Sabotka. He served his country during the Vietnam War from November 1966 ot 1968. Dick returned to the Sheridan area where he worked for Metz Beverage until 1977. From 1977 until 1983, he owned the Montana Club at Decker, Montana.
Dick enjoyed hunting and fishing in the Big Horn Mountains
with his son, brothers and nephews. He enjoyed taking his 2 grandchildren
camping and fishing in the mountains and Lake DeSmet. He was a member of
Local #400 American legion and the Elks Lodge.
Preceding him in death were his mother and brothers,
David and Larry Betcher.
Survivors include his wife Barbara, his son Bryan and wife Kathy of Sheridan, 2 grandchildren Kory and Makinzy of Big Horn, his father Alfred of Buffalo, brothers Ken, Roger and Dennis Betcher, sister Marlene Donoho all of Sheridan and several nieces and nephews who all loved him very much and he enjoyed them all. He was a wonderful family man and will be missed by all who knew him. "Dick, God bless you and rest in peace. We love you."

Her mother died when she was 13 years old and she took on the task of helping her father with the homestead and raising her three younger brothers. She married Clinton Bilyeu on July 2, 1927, in Billings, MT. They lived in Sheridan several years and then lived in S. Dakota and Colorado before returning to retire in Sheridan. After retiring, she enjoyed organizing the dinners for the retired railroad workers. She loved cooking big meals for her family as well as working in her garden and with her flowers. Bernece was well known for her knitting and crocheting. She spent all the time she could with her family in the Big Horn Mtns. hunting and fishing. Mr. Bilyeu died in 1992 with them having been married for 65 years. Bernece was a member of First Baptist Church. Being born on Feb. 29th, leap year, she always joked about being younger than her grandkids.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers Warren,
Allen and Don.

Virginia B. Bohm, age 83 of Sheridan,
WY, died Wednesday, August 23, 2000, in Westview Health Care Center, Sheridan.
Memorial service will be 1:00pm on Saturday from St.
Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev.’s David Duprey and Ray Clark officiating.
Interment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements
are with Ferries Funeral Home.
Virginia was born on March 14, 1917, at Ericson, Nebraska, the oldest daughter of Kenneth W. and Susie B. (McCain) VanHorn. She grew up on the family farms and ranches in Nebraska and S. Dakota. Virginia attended her first year of high school at Wheeler County High School in Bartlett, Nebraska. She completed high school at Bennett County High School in Martin, S. Dakota. Virginia married Carl W. Hicks and they had two sons William and Wayne. She attended Chadron State College in Nebraska receiving her teaching certificate and then taught one year in a country school. Virginia returned to Chadron State College after the death of her husband, Carl, in 1958, and received her degree in education. She went on to teach on year in Rapid City, S. Dakota. She moved to Sheridan and taught seventeen years in the third grade in Highland Park Elementary School. Virginia married Willis J. Bohm in 1966 and became the step-mother of his two sons William and Tom. They enjoyed a happy marriage until Willis died in a drowning accident on Lake DeSmet in 1984. Virginia was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Friends of the Library, Hospital Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Retired Teachers Assn. and a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed raising flowers and visiting with her close circle of friends on the phone. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Virginia is survived by her sister Jean Henkens of Chadron, Nebraska; two sons William (Bill) Hicks & wife Karen of Gering, Nebraska and Wayne Hicks & wife Susan of Wheatland, Wyoming; two step-sons Bill Bohm & wife Suzanne of Sheridan and Tom Bohm & wife Julie of Billings, Montana; grandchildren Mark Hicks, Martin Hicks & wife Tanda, Craig Hicks & wife Sherri, Brad Hicks & wife Robyn, Todd Hicks & wife Amee, Eric, Cari, Loni, Tara, Bryon and Jason Bohm; great grandchildren Lindsey Winkelman, Madison, Ryley, Regyn, Cooper, Coby Hicks.

William Robert Bosworth, Jr., age 57
of Story, WY, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at his home.
Cremation has taken place and family memorial services

Bill was born on March 27, 1943, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to William R. ,Sr. & Mary Alice (Cronheim) Bosworth. He grew up and graduated high school in Grandville, MI. He graduated from Grand Valley University in Michigan. Bill married Linda Prins in 1967 in Grand Rapids. He worked as an executive in the auto industry until 1995 when they moved to Story. He purchased and operated Presto Print in Sheridan, WY, until the present time. Bill enjoyed fly fishing and hiking.
He is survived by his wife Linda, son William R. Bosworth, III and his wife Lisa of Salt Lake City, UT, daughter Sara Kristin Lythgoe and her husband Clint of Glenrock, WY, two sisters Susan Bukrey and her husband Jim of Coopersville, MI, and Kelly Stokes and her husband Michael of Sheridan, Michigan, and one granddaughter Lacey Jo Lythgoe; also dear friends Georgina & Tom Ringley of Sheridan, WY.

As a young boy he came to the family homestead near Hulett, WY, and later moved to Upton, WY, where he graduated from high school. He attended Black Hills State College. Wes married Opal Kaiser in 1939 in Lusk, WY. They lived in Upton and he hauled Bentonite. They had two daughters and were later divorced. He moved to Colorado and worked construction. Wes married Mary Zelatel in 1950. Later they moved to Greybull, WY, where he owned and operated a trucking company for hauling Bentonite. He moved to Sheridan in the late 1950’s and worked as a crane operator for N.A. Nelson & Husman Construction traveling to many construction sites. About 1970, he went to work in the coal mine at Coal Strip, Montana. In 1975, he began working for Decker Coal as a crane operator until he retired in 1983. He enjoyed traveling and was a member of the Good Sams Club. He was an avid sports fan especially enjoying football. Wes spent many hours riding his four wheeler, fishing, going on picnics and spending time in the mountains. He took pleasure in training his Border Collie mix dogs and loved being with his grandchildren.

John was born March 9, 1940, in Great Falls, Montana, to Onin and Ann Brown Leland. He grew up on a ranch near Stanford Montana. On May 22, 1975, he was united in marriage to Waynette England in Salmon, Idaho. The couple lived in Missoula, Montana for 22 years and then moved to Sheridan. John enjoyed taking his jeep to the mountains, hunting and fishing. Other interests include mega horsepower with dual everything. He was a member of the World Wide Church of God.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a son.
Survivors include his wife Waynette of Sheridan; his daughters, Kathy Holt and Jacquie Kemper, a son, John A. Campros; a brother, Andrew Campros; a sister, Kay Dry; and two grandchildren.

after he was born and he grew up and graduated high school in Sheridan.
He served in the SeaBees during WWII overseas, first in the Aleutians and
then in the Marianna's in the Pacific. After the war, he attended
Farragut College in Idaho and
the University of Wyoming. Ike married Shirley
Logan in 1950 in Billings, Montana. He retired from Carroll Land
Company (the business he founded) in 1988. Ike was active in several
fraternal and civic organizations. He was especially pleased to have
served as a trustee of
Sheridan College during their first building phase on
the present campus. He was a strong supporter of the 4-H program
and served as a leader for many years.

Fred grew up and graduated high school in Sheridan where he played saxophone in the band and played music all his life. He graduated from Aviation Technician school in Cheyenne, WY, and was among the first technicians to work at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, UT. He worked in Ogden until going into the Air Force during WWII. After the service, he returned to Ogden to work for the government and later transferred to San Bernadino, CA, for several years. Fred was transferred to Japan for a few years and then returned to work in Kansas, Georgia and Ohio where he retired. After retiring, he moved to California for a few years until returning to Sheridan in the early 1970’s. Fred married Mary Wright in 1978 in New Hampshire. They lived in Sheridan and Mary died in 1983. In June, 1984, he married Charlotte Dickinson in Glenrock, WY. They lived in Sheridan. Fred played saxophone in bands wherever he lived. In Sheridan he played in several band including the Collegians and the Thunder Mountain Band. Fred also enjoyed playing golf at every opportunity. He was a member of Elks Lodge #520. He was preceded in death by his father, step father Jesse Ekis and one brother, Edward.

She grew up and attended schools in Norway. She came to America in 1924 and worked as a waitress in New York City until she married Arvid A. Clase on January 1, 1941, in Brooklyn, NY. They moved to Sheridan in 1964. Mr. Clase died in 1969. She enjoyed being a housewife as well as sewing, fishing, and gardening.
Preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Survived by several cousins including Kenneth Namtvedt
of Sheridan.
On Sunday, June 4, 2000, God called Rodney Clemens home and released him of all earthly suffering.
Viewing will be from 9:00am until 6:00pm on Wednesday

Rod was born on March 28, 1950, in Jamestown, N. Dakota to William & Agnes (Glowach) Clemens. He grew up and attended schools in Jamestown. He married Judy Kohoutek on July 14, 1967, in Seattle, WA. They lived in Jamestown and he worked for his father. They moved to Sheridan in 1971 and he worked for the BNSF Railroad. Rod enjoyed spending time with his family and camping in the mountains. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Rod was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kenneth.
Rod is survived by his wife Judy of Sheridan, son Rodney Paul Clemens & wife Tricia of Scottsdale, AZ, daughter Kimberly Jean Harnish & husband William of Sheridan, two brothers William and Terry Clemens of Sheridan, sister Carolyn Miemietz of Jamestown, ND, grandchildren Brittany Jean and Shallon Renae Harnish.

She grew up and attended schools in the Sheridan area. She attended business college in Rapid City, SD. Rose married Ray Stewart in Colo. Spgs. in Sept., 1930. She worked at the V.A. Medical Center for 39 years as a secretary until she retired in 1965. Ray died in 1969. She married Lawrence Garretson in August, 1972. He died soon after. Rose married John Crane in 1985 in Buffalo, WY. They later divorced. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Eagles Lodge Auxiliary and Moose Lodge Auxiliary. She enjoyed telling jokes to her friends.
Also preceded in death by her brother Raymond Kumor and
two sisters Mary Laya and Julia Wolfe.

He grew up and attended schools in Napoleon. He moved to Long Beach, Ca, during WWII and worked for the Navy in the Naval Shipyard. John married Cleo Parsons on August 16, 1939, in California. Later after the war, he went to work for the Air Force at Edwards Air Force Base in California until he retired. After retirement, they moved to Kalispell, MT, to be nearer family. He enjoyed gardening, lapidary, reading. He loved historical exploration and had a large collection of artifacts. John was a man with a king heart and a great sense of humor.

Mrs. Diefenderfer was born on January 7, 1928, to Grover Cleveland and Irma (Patefield) McAlister, in Billings, Montana. On November 9, 1946, she was united in marriage to Robert I. Diefenderfer Jr. Maxine was a special person who enjoyed time with family, gardening and animals. Her kitchen was the heart of her home with much of her time spent baking chocolate chip cookies for family and friends to share. She was an avid fan of horse competitions and was secretary of the Big Horn Mountain Horse Show for more than twenty years.
Preceding her in death were her parents.
Survivors include her husband Robert of Sheridan; her children Robert L. of Sheridan, David of South Dakota, Michael of Greenwood Village, CO, Daniel of Sheridan, Sandy Koltiska of Sheridan, Steve of Laurel, MT, Tracy of Billings, MT, Tyler of Buffalo, WY, and Kim Shackelford of Sheridan; 15 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be held at the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery at 12:30 P.M. on Wednesday, May 3, 2000, with memorial services to follow at 1:30 P.M. at the family home, 18 Circle 8 Drive, Sheridan, with Pastor Charles Lucas officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Dottie worked as a nurse for the hospital, nursing homes and doctors in Casper until she retired. She returned to Sheridan in 1990. She enjoyed gardening and traveling to see her sons.

Gary's father was a professional golfer and the family lived in Gillette, WY, Lead, South Dakota, and Casper. Gary was in the first graduating class of Kelly Walsh High School in Casper. He won the first golf championship at Kelly Waldh. Gary turned professional in 1969 working in Colorado, Arizonia, Calofornia and last working at Tomahawk Country Club in Deadwood, South Dakota, until leaving due to health problems. He worked in Sheridan for several years and returned to Casper four years ago.

Eubank died Sunday, June 11, 2000.
Clint was
born in Sheridan, Wyoming, June 18, 1901, in a frame house on the corner
of Burkitt and Coffeen. He attended Linden School and graduated from
Sheridan High School. He remembered the town of Sheridan from the
days of unpaved Main Street, the buildings from their first construction
and the inhabitants by name and personality.
Clint was the only son
of Minnie Thurmond and Dick Eubank. The grandson of John Dudley Thurmond,
a Sheridan benefactor. He delighted in the telling of how Bill Gollings
made him a bow and arrow and as a child being hoisted up to ride with William
Cody.
He had an open and inquisitive
nature and being somewhat of a rebel he learned to play drums from a black
horse soldier stationed at Fort McKenzie. In those years, professional
musicians were not held in high regard, yet Clint played a trap set at
the opening of Lodore Supper Club in Story. He played wherever he
could find a gig in those depression years. Most of the ranches,
towns and cities throughout Wyoming and parts of all the bordering states
were familiar to Clint and he could remember each in detail. Before
talkies he played in the “pit” at the Lotus and Orpheum theaters in Sheridan.
He played on a cruise ship to China, high school proms and he knew such
greats as Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa and in Denver where a trombonist named
Glenn Miller was a college stand-in.
When he married Bertha
Brown in 1930, his adaptability and unusual degree of loyalty to family
and friends found him playing in local gigs, teaching drums, and teaching
himself how to master the intricacies of a metal lathe and gunsmithing.
This combination of skills led to a career as an experimental machinist
at the China Lake Naval Weapons Center and an expert in small arms and
their repair.
Clint retired to Onyx,
California in 1965. In 1991, he moved to Story. He suffered
a congestive heart attack in 1994 and later moved into Sheridan in 1997.
Until his heart attack he played local gigs when he was over ninety years
old.
Clint maintained his memberships
in local and national clubs and organizations including NRA, Masonic Lodge
#43, Kalif Temple, York Rite, Eagles, Eastern Star and St. Peter's Episcopal
Church. He was a 50 year member in most of these organizations.
Clint is survived by Bertha,
his wife of 70 years, a daughter Barbara Cloyd Hurst and son-in-law Thomas
Kooi Hurst. Grandchildren Roger Preston Cloyd and Cheryl Cloyd Guth
both of San Diego, California; great grandchildren Thomas P. Guth, Chase,
Cole, and Carson P. Cloyd also of San Diego and daughter-in-law Helen Eubank
of Onyx, California. He was preceded in death by his son Richard.
Memorial service will
be 11:00am on Wednesday (June 14th) from St. Peter's Episcopal Church with
the Rev. Ray Clark officiating, assisted by Kevin Jones.

She had been a resident of Sheridan County for over 30 years. Mrs. Fowler was born in Howard, South Dakota on October 17, 1919, the daughter of John and Francis Schmidt Hoss.
She was a graduate of St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Mitchell, South Dakota and became a stewardess during World War II for Northwest Airlines. She returned to school and obtained her nurse anesthetist degree from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, working for many years in Campbell County Hospital in Gillette, Wyoming and Sturgis Hospital, Sturgis, South Dakota.
Irene is survived by her daughters Kay Fowler of Omaha, Nebraska and Barbara and husband Michael Crilly of Sheridan, Wyoming. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Kimberly Crilly of Tempe, AZ and Scott Crilly of Laramie, WY and her sister, Pat Lehnert of Buffalo, WY and many nieces and nephews.

She grew up and graduated high school in Cheyenne. She attended the University of Wyoming where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi. In 1935, Leona was selected to be Miss Frontier for Cheyenne Frontier Days after having been Lady-in-Waiting the previous year. During her reign, she met many celebrities of the day including Amelia Earhart and famed fan dancer Sally Rand. Leona supported the Cheyenne Frontier Days the rest of her life -- even participating in the 100th anniversary celebration parade in 1997. She married H.F. “Johnny” Gillen on June 9, 1939, in Cheyenne. In 1948, they moved to Sheridan where they lived the rest of their lives. Leona worked in MDU’s accounting dept. for 22 years. She was instrumental in setting up a hot lunch program at Holy Name ; was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader; and served as a certified election official in nearly every election during the past three decades. For the past 25 years she has been very active with reunions for the Civilian Conservation Corps. Leona enjoyed cooking and was well known for her fudge, liked doing craft projects and enjoyed watching golf on TV. The family secret can now be told: her favorite treat was a chocolate ice cream soda with pineapple syrup.

Passed away on Tuesday June 20, 2000 at the Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Darlene was born on September 17, 1934, in Sheridan, Wyoming to Clarence and Grace Mason Hayden. On July 21, 1952 she was united in marriage to James "Bud" Gleason. For many years she sold Avon Products and made many friends. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and camping with her family, however, her greatest joy was her grandchildren. She was a life time member of the First Christian Church.
Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, her infant daughter, three brothers, Gerald, Murray, and Warren; and two sisters, Margaret and Naomi.
Survivors include her sons, Douglas of Oregon City, Oregon; Dale and David both of Sheridan; her sister, Marie Good; her sisters - in - law JoAnn and Margaret McKinney of Sheridan; and eight grandchildren, Chauncie, Kyle, Kendra, Cory, Nathan, Noelle, Ryan, and Leighton.
Cremation has taken place and private family graveside services were held Saturday, June 24, 2000. Kane Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.

The family moved to Casper, WY where John attended grade
school and graduated from high school in 1942. He attended the University
of Wyoming until he was drafted in 1943. During W.W.II, he served
with the 13th Air Force in the Pacific theatre. After his discharge
in 1945, he returned to the University. John married Barbara Williams
on June 30, 1946, in Cheyenne, WY. He graduated from the University
of Wyoming with his BS degree in wildlife management in 1949. He
worked for the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission for 18 years as a Game
Biologist and Game Warden. As Game Warden, he was transferred to
Sheridan in 1960. He left the Game and Fish Dept. to enter the ranching
business. When the ranch operation was moved to Montana, with his
son Mark as manager, John went to work as a hydrographer for the Wyoming
State Engineer for several years until he retired. He was a member
of the First Congregational Church, Masonic Lodge #8, Scottish Rite and
Kalif Shrine. He was a charter member of the Kalif Buckskin Horse
Patrol. John enjoyed volunteer work at the VA, collecting artifacts,
fishing, his family and the great outdoors. He spent many hours helping
youth in baseball, Boy Scouts and Demolay.

Milt grew up and graduated high school in Ellendale. Married Maralyn Bowerman on December 19, 1942, in Aberdeen, SD. He enlisted in the Army during W.W.II and served in Europe. After the service, he returned to Ellendale where he trained for management in the C.R. Anthony clothing stores. He managed stores in Tioga, ND, and Deadwood, SD, before coming to Sheridan in 1965. He retired from the C.R. Anthony Co. in 1980. Milt was always very active in civic organizations in the places he lived. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the VFW.
He was preceded in death by his son Fred Harm.

They later divorced and in 1946 she married Earl Donnelly in Rapid City, SD. They later divorced and on September 5, 1953, she married Walter Harris in Sheridan. During her work years she worked as receptionist for Donnelley Trucking, Sheridan Press, Sheridan High School, and the YMCA. She also enjoyed working the concession stands at the baseball park and the rodeo fairgrounds for many years. She was a member of Sheridan Wesleyan Church, Elks Lodge, Eagles Lodge, and American Legion Auxiliaries. She enjoyed bowling, dancing, reading, and being involved in her church.

During WWII, they lived in California and returned to Bridger after the war. In 1953, they moved to Sheridan where she worked for Diamond Lumber Co. until she retired. Mr. Hennebry died in 1994. She enjoyed music and playing the organ. Margaret was a very active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

He grew up and attended schools in Havre, MT, well as two years of Teacher's College. Ole married Lillian Fjeldahl in Havre, MT, on July 9, 1938. He served in WWII in the Ski Troopers, 10th Mountain Division in Pizza, Italy, and was wounded in action. Prior to moving to Sheridan, he owned and operated Hoveland's Men's Store in Miles City, MT. The family moved to Sheridan in 1958 and he worked at Shadoan's Men's Store. He also formed and operated in three surrounding states the Friendly Welcome Service for newcomers. He enjoyed high school and college basketball and football. He was a member of Kiwanis, Masons, Shrine and Trinity Lutheran Church. Ole enjoyed golf, bowling and all sporting activities. His family was his greatest interest.

She grew up on the ranch at Tullock Creek, attended area schools and then graduated from high school in Hardin, MT. She met Albert Husman when he came with his father to build a stone barn on the ranch. They were married on December 28, 1931 in Hardin. They lived in Nevada and Washington where Albert worked on the Boulder and Grand Coulee Dams and then in Panama where he worked in the Canal Zone. In 1946, they came to Sheridan and the family began Husman Brothers, Inc. construction company. She loved the Lord and always trusted in Him. She was very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and past president of the Lutheran Church Women.

He grew up and graduated high school in Sheridan. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad until enlisting in the Air Force during WWII. After the service, he returned to Sheridan and to Burlington Northern. John married Marjorie Ann Smith in 1954 in Sheridan. They were later divorced. In 1957, he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service and worked until he retired in 1987. He was a member of the VFW. John enjoyed fishing, hunting, baseball, Bronco football and always went to the Tongue River football games.

She grew up and graduated high school in Anoka. She graduated from Central Bible School in Minneapolis. Norine married Wesley Kinnard on April 15, 1941, in Anoka. They lived on a farm near Elk River, MN until they moved to Wyoming in 1969. They operated Camp Bethel in the Big Horn Mtns. until they retired in 1986 and moved to Ranchester, living on the banks of the Tongue River. She taught bible study and sang at the Dayton Community Church where she was a member. Norine enjoyed doing crafts and word games.

She then lived in several placed before moving to Sheridan in 1993. She has been a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Iowa.

Agnes Mentock passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2000,
in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Viewing will be on Friday until 6:30pm. Funeral
service will be 2:00pm on Saturday from St. Peter's Episcopal Church with
the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan
Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Ferries Funeral Home.
Agnes was born on July 10, 1918, to Albert and Norah
(Bowkett) Woodhead in the town of Carniville, which was located 7 miles
north of Sheridan, Wyoming. She attended local schools and graduated
from Sheridan High School in 1936.
On December 13, 1941, she married Walter R. Mentock in the near by town of Hardin, Montana. They had three sons, Robert (Bruce), Joe and Gary. Agnes’ greatest love was her family and she always put them first and herself second. Besides being a devoted wife and caring and loving mother, she loved to teach young children. She has touched the lives of all the children in her surrounding families and was a role model and sounding board for many of them as they grew into adulthood. She was and will always be loved by all the people she came into contact with. She also loved fishing and camping in the Big Horn Mountains. She enjoyed rides in the surrounding countryside and always marveled at the abundance of wildlife. All these things were important to her because she was able to do them with her family.
Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter,
eldest son Bruce, a brother William Woodhead and a sister Annie Harrison.
Agnes is survived by her sons, Joe and wife Sherry of
Sheridan, Gary and wife Mary of Sheridan ; grandson James Mentock, Kansas
City, MO; granddaughters Katelynn Mentock, Melanie Mentock & Christina
Hansford all of Sheridan; great granddaughter Erinn Hansford and great
grandson Drew Hansford; sisters Elaine Moon of Sheridan & Edie Ball
of Scappoose, Oregon; sisters-in-law Josephine Atkinson, Mary Mentock &
Winne Woodhead all of Sheridan; brother-in-law John (Bula) Mentock of Sheridan;
and several nieces and nephews.

He worked for coal miners for 32 years. After coal mining, John went to work at Big Horn Beverage as a driver salesman for 26 years before he retired. John enjoyed fishing, gardening, and hunting. He was a member of Holy Name Church, United Mine Workers, and Eagles Lodge #186.
He is survived by a sister, Joshepine Atkinson of Sheridan; and two nieces and six nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Andrew "Splitz", Mike and Walter "Barber" Mentock; sisters, Anna Flockhart and Mary Adams; and lifelong companion, Mary Boyak.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 7, 2000 from 5-7pm at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 8, 2000 at 10am at Kane Funeral Home with Father Cliff Jacobsen officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

She worked several places before moving to Denver where she worked with
Anderman Oil Co. for over forty years. She moved to Sheridan in 1995
to be near family.

She grew up and graduated high school in Nebraska. She attended nursing school in Hastings, NE and Wichita, Kansas graduating with her nursing degree. Jessie married William Brommer on December 25, 1927, in Smith Center, Kansas. They moved to Sheridan in 1928 and resided here the remainder of their lives. Mr. Brommer died in 1951. Jessie married Paul Morrow on February 14, 1954. Mr. Morrow died in 1961. Better known to her friends as “Jimmie”, she enjoyed fishing, flowers, gardening, playing cards with friends and loved being with her grandchildren. She was a 50 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She came to the United States as a
young child and grew up in Park City, MT. She married John Baker in 1931.
They lived in Clearmont, WY, and were later divorced. On August 7, 1938,
Dorothy married Carl Nelson in hardin, MT. They moved to the Sheridan area
in 1940 were Dorothy lived while Carl was in the service during WWII. They
moved to the ranch on Lower Praire Dog Creek in 1946. They sold the ranch
and moved into Sheridan in 1965. Mr. Nelson died in 1970. She was a member
of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Wakely School board, Sheridan Cowbells
and the Sheridan County election board for 19 years. Dorothy enjoyed crocheting,
gardening, and her family.

The family moved to Sheridan area in 1911 homesteading east of Wyarno on the middle fork of Badger Creek. Ruth attended schools in Sheridan and graduated from High School in 1926. She was employed by the R.D.E. Pierce family of Parkman to tutor their three children. In 1928, Ruth entered nurses training at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County and graduated in 1931. She was a private duty nurse until 1942 when she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps at Cheyenne, WY. She transferred into the Army Air Force and was then stationed at Tinker Field with the 4132nd AAF Base Unit in Garden City, Kansas. Ruth accepted a supervisory position at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County upon her discharge from the Air Force in 1946 serving until 1956 as second floor supervisor. In 1956 she married Nels A. Nelson, SR. (then president of N.A. Nelson Construction Co. ) and resigned from the hospital. Ruth was very active in the community all her life as a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the Hospital Auxiliary, Sheridan Women's Club and the Sheridan Garden Club. She loved traveling and went on many trips.

Dakota, California, Utah and Gillette, WY, before coming to Sheridan in 1955. She focused her life on her family. Shirley enjoyed sewing, drawing & painting and decorating.

She was raised in the area of Stanley, Jump River, Ladysmith and Eidswald, Wisconsin where she attended grade school, Norwegian school in summers and Sunday School at the Lutheran Church. When she was 12 years old, she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to finish 7th and 8th grade while working for her room and board. She was housekeeper for the Edwin Rose family for seven years and took bookkeeping classes when she could. She was very good at reading, spelling, writing and math. While working in Minneapolis she met her husband to be, Guy Ellsworth Olson. Guy came to Wyoming to work in the early 1930’s and in 1936 Norma came to Wyoming and they were married on September 24, 1936, in Casper, WY. They followed the road construction work until 1942 when they settled in Sundance, WY. Later they moved to the Scott Ranch on Sunny Divide, living there until Guy died on July 6, 1959. The family moved onto their own ranch at the foot of Oudin Hill and Norma worked at the Devil’s Tower restaurant for a time. She then moved to Sundance and worked as a cook in the hospital. In 1970, she moved to Casper and ran her own house cleaning business until 1992 when she moved to Sheridan to be closer to her daughter. She worked part-time for her daughter at the Econ-O-Wash Laundry and did ironing in her home. Norma was a member of the African Violet Club and enjoyed raising violets of which she had as many as 200 at times. She also enjoyed cooking and baking and was always baking goodies to give to someone.

She grew up and graduated high school in Sheridan. She attended Park School of Fashion in Denver, CO. She managed The Closet clothing store in Gillette, WY. Claudia married Gary Plachek on September 26, 1984, in Sheridan. She worked as a pharmacy technician for the Medicine Shoppe for a time. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Claudia was an avid reader and also enjoyed going to the mountains, fishing, cooking, sewing and crocheting. She loved being at home taking care of her family.

He grew up in Acme, attending schools there through the 8th grade and then graduated from Sheridan High School in 1943. He worked for the Sheridan Wyo Coal Co. during W.W.II. Louis married Della Sneath on July 1, 1950, in Sheridan. He worked as a bartender at the Sheridan Inn, Lotus and the Kalif Shrine. Later he began work at Stevens Fryberger where he worked for twenty years as a clerk in the Men’s Dept. until he retired. He was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Masonic Lodge #43 and the York Rite Bodies. He was past treasurer of the Culinary Workers Union and past secretary of the United Mine Workers. Louis enjoyed yardwork, animals and his family & friends.

He emigrated to the U.S. in 1927 and worked in various locales including Fort Peck during the depression. He married Marguerite Nelson in 1939 and worked in Bremerton Ship Works during WW11. After the war, they moved to Sheridan and worked for her father, N.A. Nelson, where Carl was a superintendent for the construction company. Following Carls' back surgery in the early 1950's, they wound the Triangle Service Station and Motel, the Holiday Lodge and Sundown Motel, respectively. They retired in 1976 and Mrs. Prestfeldt died in 1998. Because of his health, Carl moved to Phoenix to be close to his daughter. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge #520 and the Kalif Shrine.

He came to Parkman, WY, when he was a young boy. He moved to Alaska in the early 1930’s where he worked in the sawmill and then built his own boat and became a commercial salmon fisherman. He was drafted in the Army in 1941. He married Mary Leadbeater on November 4, 1944, in Fairbanks, AK. After the service, he returned to Ranchester, WY, and founded Prill Brothers with his brother Leroy. He retired in 1991. Mary died in 1992. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the American Legion. David enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and woodworking.

Carl was married to Doris McNeil Ralston from 1932 until her death in 1937. He served our country in the Pacific during WWII in the Army Air Corps and the Merchant Marines. In 1946, he married Victoria “Dolly” Boatsman of Upton, Wyoming. In 1948, Carl and Dolly started the Ralston Tourist Court on North Main, which they expanded over the years to become the Sheridan Center Inn. Carl and Dolly retired to Mesa, Arizona in 1979. Dolly died on January 1, 2000 and Carl moved to Washington State shortly thereafter to be near his son and family.
Carl was a member of the First Congregational Church of Sheridan, Elks Lodge #520, Sheridan Lodge #8 A.F. & A.M., York and Scottish Rite Bodies, the Royal Order of Jesters, the Order of Eastern Star, the Sheridan Rotary Club and the Sheridan Country Club. He was Past Commander of Knights Templar and Past Potentate of Kalif Temple. He served on the Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County Board for 12 years and was one of the many workers who helped establish the fine present Sheridan Library.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Boatsman Newman of Nipomo, CA; son Atley Ralston, M.D., daughter-in-law Sheila Bird Ralston, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two nieces and two nephews.
Graveside service will be 9:00am Monday (Sept. 18th) in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 10:30am from First Congregational Church with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Arrangements are with Ferries Funeral Home, Sheridan Wyoming.

He attended schools in Campbell County and Buffalo, WY. As a youth he was an excellent tennis player and enjoyed all sports. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII. After the service, he returned to Wyoming and worked as a ranch hand for the Bob Gibbs family in Buffalo, WY. He enjoyed reading.

He attended school in Pactola until age 10 when the family moved to Phoenix, AR, where Roy graduated from Phoenix Union High School. In 1934, he came to Sheridan and worked in various jobs until he began his trucking career. In 1937, he was united in marriage to Vesta Thomas by the Reverend Oliver Reed in Sheridan. He served in the Army during W.W.II. After the service, he worked for several large trucking firms including Salt Creek Freightways in Sheridan, Buckingham Freightways in Rapid City, SD, Wells Trucking Co. and Navajo Freightlines in California. He also worked for Donnelly Van and Storage in Sheridan from 1963 until 1968. In 1968, he moved to Las Vegas, NV, where he worked for Capital North American Moving Company as warehouse and truck foreman until he retired in 1981. He returned to Sheridan in 1992. Roy was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Teamsters Union, York Rite and Kalif Shrine. He was a Past Master of Big Horn Mountain Masonic Lodge #43. He loved fishing, the Big Horn Mountains and the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Irene was born September 24, 1912,
to Alfred and Amelia Reinking Decker in Greenwood, Wisconsin. She moved
to Montana with her family when she was around three years old. As she
grew to a teen, she worked for different families on ranches. She married
Harry Powell on October 9, 1930 in Hardin, Montana. To them were born 4
children; Alice Mae Morris Fleming, Willis (Bill) Alfred Powell, Addie
Marie Goodwin, and Lee Stewart Powell. They ranched at Quietus, Montana
until Harry passed away April 20, 1958 at the ranch. She later moved to
Sheridan and took care of an old friend Mertie Willey.
She married George Rudolph in September
of 1961 in Sheridan, Wyoming. They lived and worked on several ranches
in Montana and Wyoming and then moved to the Trails End where they were
caretakers for Manville Kendrick at the Mansion. Later, they retired and
lived at 335 N. Custer in Sheridan until George became ill and had to go
to Sheridan Manor Nursing Home. Irene could no longer take care of the
home and had to sell it and move to Sheridan Square in June of 1999.
She enjoyed family and friends. She
was active in the Methodist Church and enjoyed babysitting.

of Sheridan Manor; two daughters Alice Morris Fleming of Otter, MT, and
Addie Goodwin and her husband Ace of Otter; two sons, Willis Powell and
his wife Bobbie of Gillette and Lee Powell and his wife Jackie of Decker,
MT; one brother LeRoy Decker and his wife Neta of LaClede, Idaho; 13 grandchildren;
30 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Irene is also survived
by 3 stepchildren, Marge Johnson and her husband Vince, John and his wife
Pat, Jack and two step daughters-in- law, Carol Rudolph of Sheridan and
Carol Rudolph of Canada, 6 step grandchildren, and 11 step great grandchildren.
She is also survived by some very special friends Michael and Mary Beth
Evers and their sons Joseph and Nicholas.
She was preceded in death by her parents,
2 sisters, 2 brothers, 1 great-great grandson and one stepson.

Lee worked as a secretary during the years before she met and married John H. Schwerma on June 9, 1984, in Billings, MT. John was in the military and they lived in Texas and S. Dakota before he retired and they returned to Billings. They eventually purchased property near Roundup. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading and helping John with his flea market business. She was a member of Bull Mountain Community Church in Roundup.

He grew up on the family farm near Ray and atteneded country school. He graduated from Wheelock High School. john worked the family farm for several years then after working and leasing several ranches he bought his own near Ashland, Montana. He married Vera Foster on December 9, 1946. They ranched until 1969 when they sold the ranch, retired and moved into Sheridan. John was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, life member of Elks Lodge #520, and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, gardening and playing cards.

She grew up and attended school in Richey and then graduating high school in Fairview High School, Fairview, Montana. She worked at the Richland County Courthouse and as WWII began she and a friend went to work in Portland, OR, as welders in the shipyards. She returned to Montana and enrolled in the CAdet Nursing Program at Montana State University in Bozeman. She graduated a Registered Nurse in 1946 and worked at the Frances Mahon Deconess Hospital and also the Moscow, Idaho, hospital. While at the Glasgow hospital she met Harold Sethne and they were married on October 12, 1947, in Fairview, MT. They lived on the farm north of Glasgow, MT. They spent the last 28 winters in Mesa, Arizona, were she enjoyed golfing and volunteered at the Valley Lutheran Hospital and was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. In Larslan, MT, she golfed in the Opheim Women’s League and was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and Eastern Star. Her joys were her grandchildren and family as well as gardening and needlework.

He grew up and graduated high school in Sheridan. Graduated from Sheridan College where he was Student Body President. He graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in education. Berdon enlisted in the Army and served in the occupation of Japan after WWII. After the service, he returned to Sheridan where he married Vera King on March 20, 1951, in Sheridan. They moved to Lusk, WY, where he taught math. The next year they moved to Dayton, WY, where he taught math in the Tongue River Schools. Later they moved into Sheridan where he owned and operated Berdon’s TV & Hi-Fi for over twenty years. Vera died in 1992. In his early years, Berdon enjoyed motorcycles and the Sturgis Rally. He also enjoyed Polka music and photography.

She grew up on a wheat farm near Johnstown and graduated from Johnstown High School in 1932. She worked at the telephone company and later the post office. She married Harold Snedden on June 18, 1942, in Johnstown. During Harold service in WWII she lived in Boise, ID and Lordsburg, NM. After the war, they lived in Illinois, Cheyenne, WY, Grand Junction, CO, and Massachusetts before coming to Sheridan in 1966. Ada was a devout Christian and worked hard in every church of which she was a member. She was a Scout leader, Rainbow Girl Advisor, a member of Grand Cross of Color, Order of Eastern Star, the Garden Club, PEO, Sheridan Women’s Club, and First Presbyterian Church. She volunteered many hours at the VA. Medical and Memorial Hospital. Ada loved life and the arts. She was an award winning photographer. She was a seamstress and did all kinds of craft work. She loved flowers, gardening and being a hostess.

of 55 years in 1997.

She grew up and attended schools in Hulett. Cleo married Ralph Stewart on October 7, 1939, in Sundance, WY. They lived in Chamberlain , S. Dakota, until they came to Sheridan in 1975. Ralph died in 1991. Cleo spent the last five years near family in Moorcroft. She enjoyed traveling, gardening and handwork. Cleo loved serving the Christians and being with her family especially the grandchildren. She was a member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church.

She grew up and graduated high school in up state New York. Loretta graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Masters Degree in Social Work. She came to Sheridan in 1980 to work at the V.A. Medical Center as a Medical Social Worker. She also taught assertiveness training courses at Sheridan College. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Sheridan Business Women, People for Human Rights and served on the board of the Senior Center. Loretta helped in the early days of the organization of Hospice of the Big Horns. She was a liason between the V.A. Medical Center and the Sheridan Community. She enjoyed ceramics, reading and traveling.

He grew up and graduated high school in Chicago. He worked at various jobs and in the shipyard for a time in Chicago before moving to Sheridan in 1947. Married Juanita Roush on April 28, 1948, in Sheridan. He worked as a carpenter and brick layer for many years and later was a bartender at the Elks Lodge and the Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, music and playing the accordion. Albert was an avid sports fan and loved the Chicago Bears. He was a life member of Elks Lodge #520 and a member of Big Horn Mtn. Eagles.

She grew up and graduated high school in Duluth, MN. Fay attended Duluth State Teachers College and then attended the University of Minnesota for one year in special education. She moved to Sheridan in 1929 to work at the V.A. Medical Center. She married Richard Vollbrecht in 1939 in Miles City, MT. They lived in Sheridan and she continued working at the V.A. as a Manual Arts Therapist until she retired in 1967. Richard died in 1959. She taught special education for one year at Hill School after her retirement. She remained active doing crafts and was a member of the Threaders craft group.

Alma Marie Wallace, age 87 of Sheridan, WY, died Friday, May 26, 2000, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Ferries Funeral Home.
Alma was born June 14, 1912, to Peter & Barbara (Billek) Kohlruss in Saskatchewan, Canada. She immigrated to the United States as a child with her family where they homesteaded near Gillette, WY. Later the family moved to Acme, WY, then into Sheridan. She graduated from Holy Name School, Sheridan High School and Heinmans College in Sheridan. Alma married Herschel Wallace in August, 1941, in Hardin, Montana. She worked at Hospital Pharmacy and the Mills Company. She and her husband purchased the Karmelkorn Shop. In 1948, they built and operated “Hersch’s” Drive In Restaurant until 1966. She returned to the Mills Company and worked until she retired in 1978. She had a great love for her family and grandchildren.
Mr. Wallace died in 1977. She was also preceded in death by her parents and brother Edward.
She is survived by her daughter Norma Aguilar and husband Max of Sheridan, sisters Bertha Buckley of Sheridan and Lenora Kohlruss of Lander, WY; grandchildren Wayne Walker, Marla Garriffa, Sue Bremkamp and husband Jim, David Walker, Ronald Walker and wife Chery, all of Sheridan; seven great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren and several nephews.

The family moved to Sheridan when he was a young boy and he attended schools in Sheridan. Everett married Florence Lucile Hublitz on May 2, 1939, in Hardin, MT. During W.W.II , he served in the U.S. Army in the Europe and Theatre of Operations. He returned to Sheridan after the war. The couple moved to Riverton in 1957 where he worked as a truck driver and for Wind River Ready Mix for many years. He was a 40 year member of the V.F.W. Post #3628 in Riverton. He enjoyed camping and fishing. They enjoyed spending several winters in Nevada and Arizona.

He graduated from Hanna-Elk Mtn. High
School. He was employed by the Rose Bud Coal Co. in Hanna and worked there
for 18 years. He married Mary Shurter on September 28, 1974 in Hanna, Wyoming.
He had management positions at Hanna
Automotive and Elk Mtn. Conoco and Rose Bud Coal Co. for many years. He
worked at the West Park Mobile Home Community in Sheridan for several years
after moving here. He retired and they moved to Sheridan in August of 1993.
Hank loved spending time with his family and friends, he also loved hunting,
fishing and all sports and was on the Hanna City Basketball team and also
refereed basketball.
He was preceded in death by his parents
and two sisters.

Norma was born on January 1, 1910, in Custer, South Dakota, to James Vincent and Hazel Snider McGovern. At the age of 2 years, they moved to Big Horn, Wyoming where she lived all her school years, graduating from Sheridan High School and taking postgraduate classes for two years, receiving her teaching certificate. She taught at Red Butte, Kleenburn, and Ranchester schools before marrying George Wren on June 18, 1933 in Sheridan. They had one son, George Edward.
At the start of World War II, they moved to California where they stayed for 12 years. Due to her health, they came back and along with her mother and father, they bought and operated the Little Horn Trading Company in Wyola, Montana. After selling the store, they moved to Sheridan, where she has lived since her death.
Preceding Norma in death are her parents; her husband George; and two sisters, Connie Coast and Letha Mae McGovern; and brother Harold McGovern.
Survivors include her son George Edward Wren of Dallas, Texas; her sister Darlene Hollingsworth of Sheridan; three grandchildren, Mark, Jeffrey, and Robert Wren; 4 great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She grew up and attended schools Coshocton. She worked at Ransom's Dept. Store and J.C. Penney for many years in Coshocton. She was married to Carl S. McKenzie, Harold Rucker and C.R. "Pete" Wright all of whom preceded her in death. Following here marriage to C.R. Wright on June 6, 1949, she moved to Kingman, Arizona, where she lived until 1989 when she moved to Sheridan to live with her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Ester McKenzie. She visited Kingman each year as long as she was able. Justine was a member of Eastern Star, Mohave County Arizona Historical Society and St. John's United Methodist Church in Kingman. She enjoyed baking and made untold numbers of cookies and cakes.

Claire grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan. She moved to Seattle, WA, and worked building aircraft at Boeing during W.W.II. In Seattle, she met Samuel Yorks and they were married in Portland, OR, on April 29, 1944. After the war, they lived in Seattle where she worked as a secretary. Later they moved to Portland and Claire attended Portland State University and graduated with a degree in Social Work. After graduating, she went to work for the State of Oregon were she worked hard to help the disadvantage. Because of her hard work, she received glowing letters of appreciation from the State administrators for her tireless efforts. She retired in 1982 and then in 1984 they moved to Sheridan. Sam died in 1996. As a member of the Literacy Volunteers, Hospital Aux. and the Animal Shelter Board, she continued her care for people and animals. She was also a member of the Am. Assoc. of University Women, Civic Theatre Guild, Carriage House Aux., & the Creative Fiber Guild. Claire enjoyed the outdoors camping, fishing, hiking and snow machining. She also enjoyed sewing, needlework & stain glass work. She loved traveling and caring for animals especially her cats.
