Shirley M. Frickey

Shirley Maxine Frickey, 79, died on December 31, 2012, at Sheridan Manor in Sheridan, Wyoming. Shirley was born August 17, 1933 in Kansas City, Missouri. Shirley was the only child of Elmer and Dortha Rogge.

At the very young age of 4 1/2, Shirley learned to play the piano, and she played throughout her life. She enjoyed piano and music so much that she graduated with an associate’s degree in music from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. After college she worked a short while for Pillsbury Mills in Kansas City while continuing her study of music at the Kansas City Conservatory of Music.

When she was 21, Shirley went on a family trip to Yellowstone Park. This trip was unique because a family friend was invited along. Her grandmother invited Hank Frickey to accompany them, and three months after this trip, on October 20, 1955, Shirley and Hank were married.

Once married, Mom and Dad made their home in Sheridan where dad had his business, Frickey’s Heating and Air Conditioning. Mom raised three sons, Gary, Dean, and Bob. She was always available to support each of our interests – including, of course, a year or two of piano lessons for those of us who were interested! A family vacation to Disneyland and camping in the Big Horns will always be happy memories.

After her boys graduated from high school in the mid-70s, Mom renewed her interest playing the piano, and play she did! She was busy. She played piano for the Sheridan College "General Delivery" show choir and retired in 2004 after 30 years as accompanist and instructor with the music department. She was an accompanist for vocal music programs in high schools in Districts 1 and 2. She played piano in many local musicals including “Carnival,” “Music Man,” “Hello Dolly,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Chicago,” “The Drunkard,” and “Oklahoma!” She played for St. Julian’s Anglican Catholic Church for several years and also provided backup for the “Dixie Dudes” and performed at receptions as part of “Side By Side.” She had wonderful musical talent and she entertained many, and we will miss her.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Hank in 1992, son Bob in 1998, mother Dortha in 2010, and father Elmer in 1978. She leaves behind her son Gary and his wife Karen and daughter Ali of Scottsdale, AZ; son Dean and his wife Shelly of Idaho Falls, ID; and two grandsons Brandon Frickey of Denver, CO, and Cody Frickey of Snowmass, CO.

We would like to thank Joy Lash who spent many hours helping Mom during the past several years. She was a wonderful friend to Mom, and remains one to the rest of the family.

Services for Shirley will be at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 4, 2013 at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Goodwin officiating. Interment will be in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery.
