Melvin Alois Thiel, 84, of Sheridan passed away at his residence on Saturday, June 16, 2012, surrounded by his loving family.

Melvin was born on November 29, 1927 to Nicholas and Margaret (Mueller) Thiel in Mantador, North Dakota. He grew up in Wahpeton, N.D. and attended schools there and in Hankinson, N.D. He was enlisted in the Army from 1946 to 1951. He married Janet Richter from Lidgerwood, N.D. on April 19, 1949. They had four children together, Larry, Mary, Kathy, and Jane. He worked as an Engineer on the Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement in 1989. He owned Mel's Mobil Service Station in Wahpeton, N.D. for many years.

Mel's favorite hobby was golfing, he liked to play cards with his buddies, reading, helping the Knights of Columbus with Bingo, doing word and jigsaw puzzles, he enjoyed being outside and working in his yard, going to sports, events especially those of his grandchildren, he liked to walk and do his daily exercising. He often visited his family in North Dakota and Utah. His favorite time was spent with his family, kids and grandkids. Mel was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church, Elks, Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother; Alden Thiel, sisters Arlene Ursula and Joan Alice Thiel, and grandson; John Jess Schneider. He is survived by his wife, Janet Thiel of Sheridan, WYhis son Larry Thiel of Sheridan, WY, daughters; Mary (Paul) Schneider of Sheridan, WY, Kathy (Bob) Hoffert of Wahpeton, N.D., and Jane (Jack) Lounsbury, of Ivins, UT. His siblings; Abert Thiel of Fergus Falls,MN, Gilbert Thiel of Medford OR, Nick Thiel of Oregon City, OR, Dolly Fallwell of Tuscon, AZ , Donna Mae Simpson of Oroville, CA, thirteen grandchildren; Melanie Hoffert, Mandy Dube, David Hoffert, Melissa Condos, Christina Midboe, Don Hoffert, Sarah Skinner, Deidre Thiel, Mark Lounsbury, Katie Lounsbury, Maureen Lounsbury, Kevin Lounsbury, Joshua Thiel, and eleven great grandchildren.

A Visitation will be held at 6:00 pm with a Rosary at 7:00 pm on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Kane Funeral Home with Deacon Joe Kristufek officiating.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Friday, June 22, 2012 at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Mike Mulloy officiating. Interment will be in the Elks Cemetery with full Military Honors.A reception will follow at the Parish Hall.
