Mary Virginia Wolney

Mary Virginia Wolney 89, of Sheridan, passed away on September 18, 2009 at Sheridan Manor.

Born December 17, 1919, to Frank and Mary "Soltis" Kawulok at home in a small mining town near Dietz, Wyoming called Shoestring. She grew up on a farm near Monarch, Wyoming, and attended Englefield School. When the family moved to Wolf Creek, she worked on the family farm alongside her three brothers and five sisters. She married John Wolney on October 29, 1939 at Monarch. They lived in Monarch until the mine closed, and then moved to Ranchester.

Mary’s most cherished moments were those spent with her family. She loved to cook traditional Polish food and gourmet meals. Her kids and grand-kids could hardly wait until Christmas Eve for her traditional Polish Christmas dinner. She was also a cook at Tongue River Elementary School for a time. Other favorite hobbies were gardening and rock hunting.

Mary was a member of the St. Edmund’s Catholic Church in Ranchester Wyoming.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband John Wolney, daughter, Barbara Nelson, brothers: Jack Kawulok and Frank Kawulok, sisters: Rose Bocek and Kay Kukuchka. She is survived by her son Richard Wolney, (Janet) from Paradox, CO, brother Ray Kawulok (Helen), Ranchester, WY., sisters: Dorothy Williams and Anne Kettley, Sheridan, and Jeannette Bauder, (Orson) from Davenport, IA., six grandchildren: David Wolney, Daniel Wolney, Jared Wolney, Charly Wolney, Shawn Nelson and Amber Nelson and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Kane Funeral Home.

Graveside services are 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 23, 2009 in the Elks Section at Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.
