John Gilbert "Gil" Harris, 95, of Sheridan, passed away at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County on May 15, 2009.
Gil Harris was born June 21, 1913 in Custer, South Dakota to John and Blanche Harris. He graduated from Campbell County High School in 1931 and married Afton Mulholland in 1933. They began married life on the family ranch in Recluse but soon moved to Arizona where Gil owned and operated a dairy in Flagstaff and Camp Verde. They returned to the north in 1957 and began work on the Antler Ranch in Wyola, Montana. Gil became foreman for the Little Horn Ranch until he left to begin his own small farming and ranching operation also in Wyola. He was well known as a chuck wagon cook and was famous for his doughnuts and cinnamon rolls. He also was brand inspector for many years. Following Afton’s death in 1976, he married Nell McKinley who passed away in 2005. Gil loved the land and taking care of the animals he raised. He was a talented horseman and enjoyed roping. He took special delight in his family and loved teasing and playing jokes on and with his grandchildren. He was an active member of the Wyola Baptist Church.
Gil was preceded in death by his wife, Afton, wife, Nell, and two sons, Jack and David. He is survived by his daughter, Anne Haynes, of Homer Alaska; and his six grandchildren, Kelly Seekins, of Camp Verde, AZ, David Haynes, of Norfolk, VA, Merritt Harris, of Hardin, MT, Hale Harris, of Ft. Smith, MT, Crystal Lenhart, of Sheridan, WY, and Jill Hoyt, of Charlo, MT.
A viewing will be held at Kane Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 from 8:00 am until 9:30 am with the service to follow at Kane Funeral Home at 10:00 am with Pastor Hale Harris officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
