Graveside Funeral Services for Jean Kern, 90 year old former Buffalo woman who passed away August 20th at the Yorkshire Care Center in Hemet, California, will be held Saturday, Sept. 14th at 11:00 a.m. in Willow Grove Cemetery in Buffalo. Donations may be made in Jean’s memory to the Jean Kern Memorial, a fund set up to help the family defray expenses.
Jean Marvel Kern was born on March 12, 1923 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Boyd and Osie Merrill. When she was three years old the family moved to Buffalo, Wyoming where they had a homestead on the Powder River. She went to grade school in Clearmont and high school in Buffalo where she graduated with the class of 1942. During her school years with her parents they worked at various ranches in Johnson County. Jean married John W. Kern on February 8, 1943 and they made their home in Buffalo Wyoming until 1951. They then moved to Cortez, Colorado. Jean was a homemaker and her husband’s work took them to Colorado, California and Wyoming but always returning home to Buffalo. Upon retirement Jean and John loved to travel to see their children in California, Colorado and Arizona. They were living in Hemet, California when John passed away in 1992, but his final resting place is at home, in Buffalo, Wyoming. Following John’s death Jean moved back to Buffalo for one year before moving back to Hemet where she lived until her death.
She was a member of the Catholic Church and the Catholic Rosary Society. Jean loved the outdoors and spending time in the mountains with her family. She enjoyed crafts, especially needle work, reading and loved to whistle. She was known as the whistler.
She is survived by four sons, John Kern and wife Gayle of Sheridan, Robert Kern and wife Cheri of Boulder City, Nevada, Jerry Kern and wife Roberta of Delores, Colorado, and Jim Kern and wife Barbara of Shiner, Texas; one daughter Teresa McCoy and husband Wendell of Golden Valley, Arizona; ten grandchildren, several great and great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents her husband, three sisters and one granddaughter.
